So at my high school today I realized I'm kind of a "closet nerd". I'm Senior, Defensive line Captain of the football team (american), hang out with the "jocks" and work out reguarly. But most people are suprised when the hear I'm and Avid gamer, Star wars fan, movie buff, watch anime, and role play online.

has anyone else felt this way or know some one like this, because I feel kind of wierd.

I was the same (I was the quarterback and linebacker for varsity for 4 straight years at high school), until I started working for Microsoft and realized that there isn't really much hiding from nerd-dom at that point.

i am quite the opposite,

I am a Open nerd, everyone knows i'm a nerd, i talk about gaming on a daily basics and spend most of my time with my nerdy yet awesome friends.

and a example of a Closet nerd is my dad, he was a jock in high-school but was a Genius at Computers and Loved doing Nerdy things, i was born when the first Diablo was out and my dad was playing that (he told me this)

No, not really. I've always been a nerd. What I discovered as I got older is that I am deceptively less severe at almost everything I do than people seem to think I am. To put it in plain english; I'm a gamer-nerd, but don't watch anime, or go to convention-things, or LARP; I like theatre, but ask me anything that isn't painfully mainstream and I'm wouldn't have a clue; I appear cultured because this site, and my random googling keeps me up to date on a variety of things, but if someone has a slight genuine interest in something (like politics, sports, music, fashion etc) I am out of my depth; I can talk a lot, hold a conversation with almost anyone, like to laugh and stuff, but I'm more introverted than not; you get the idea.

I tend to know a little about a lot of things, but not a lot about the little things that really define areas of knowledge and experience, but because I'm confident in what I do know, I give the impression that I have more knowledge/experience than I actually do.

I kind of get wht you mean, though I think this is something that can be applied to a much broader spectrum. Basically, any kind of social circle or clique will have their reservations about certain interests, that people may mask out of peer pressure, in order to assimilate into the group better. I think I may have surprised a fair few people with some of my tastes based on my appearance, but I think it would become obvious to anyone spending more than 5 minutes with me that I'm quite the nerdy introvert.

Dude, you're posting that you might be a nerd on a site dedicated to gaming and a gaming lifestlye. You proudly display your badge of victory in the Dance Dance Kitty Revolution. I don't think you're still in the closet, man, not with that list of worthy activities. You might be into military strategy and tactics, or just enjoy a good shooter, judging by what you've been playing recently in your profile, but you've still got the nerd cred, man. The concept of jock v. nerd from the '70s is dying, man. Hollywood may not have caught up entirely, but culture has. Enjoy yourself. It's worth it.

Hehe.. my friend acts like he's on the jersey shore, but he's more of a nerd than I am. It's adorable. Or it would be if so many people didn't hate him...

I'm a full-blown, proud nerd. How proud? I played Yugioh, in High School, in the cafeteria courtyard, in full view of everyone at lunch. I could not have BEEN a bigger nerd in high school.

And anyone that even SLIGHTLY knows me nowadays knows I'm a nerd. That being said, I don't share my nerdiness with EVERYONE. If I know that someone has no interest in nerdy things (like older people) I won't bore them with talking about my favorite games or whatnot. I only expose my nerd self to those that will appreciate it.

And I do like exposing myself.

Most people who know me as a guitarist and performer first get a little surprised when I make my first nerdy reference.

I'm not exactly a 'closet' nerd, but I don't talk about my nerduality openly, it just kind of ends up in conversations. Like when someone signed me up for karaoke to do a Disney song and I was able to do it without reading the words, everyone had thought I wouldn't know it, but I'm a huge Disney fan, so...

Or a whole bunch of people will be talking about a new videogame at the bar, and I'll join in, but everyone thought that I would spend far too much time rolling in pussy to have time to do things like play videogames or watch Star Wars.

I like guitarist me, he's a lot cooler than real me.

I sort of am too. Some friends at work even share some of my nerdisms but I never say "hey I love that too" I don't want people to know how immature I really am. My real good friends kinda know but thats like 3 in a big friend pool.

Nope. I'm a loud and proud nerd. I've got a lotr poster and swords hanging on wall, as well as a doctor who poster and the lost boys poster. I regularly play video games. And I visit this site frequently. So, yeah...

I've been told that I don't look like a nerd...until I open my mouth XD

A guy friend once told me the reason is because, "Hot girls don't play video games". Honestly, it made me laugh. Almost all the girls I know are gamers and are pretty darn fine. But since they don't wear slogan t-shirts they don't get the recognition?

First week of Junior Year of highschool,
the new precalculus teacher was some young guy and all the girls wanted to know how old he was.
He told them what it was in binary.
I was asked by no less than 10 girls (of which only 2-3 I would have considered friends) to figure out how old he was... (I was NOT in that class as I'd been allowed to skip precalc and move on to calculus)

So yeah, I'd say the secrets been out for a while...

Hell no. I am proud of my geekiness. It's easy for me though, being a tall guy with a shaved head, I can do pretty much whatever I want and no one has the balls to give me guff over it. And if they did I'd be all over them.

Nope never. Incidentally I grew up in a town of about 60 people. So I was considered a mind-bendingly strange weirdo didn't care. The town was so small that if they wanted a full football team they had to be cool with me being around.
As a police officer I am definitely an outsider within my peer group (especially officers over 40) because I have a Portal poster by my desk, a Blue Dragon D&D mini on top of my computer, and listen to the punk rocks (and post on the escapist) while writing reports/doing paperwork.
Some people can connect about one or two things (I love Community and 30 rock! or Oh you played the new batman game) but I've met maybe one or two other people on the same level of dork.
No one gives me too hard a time about it though, it helps to tower over everyone around you.
It's all cool though, different strokes and all that.

And what's your response? Do you coyly admit it? Brazenly say outright how certain shows should be heralded as classics? Give a muttered response of "yeah, some of it's pretty good, I guess"? (I'm genuinely curious, no matter the tone of my text.) I'd say spread the knowledge, you might find whole new circles to interact with.

The few people I respect know about my entertainment tastes & most of them have similar enjoyments.

Rest of the world doesn't care & doesn't matter.
