Maybe it was because of the Chinese hackers.
The Chinese government didn't want to deal with Western companies complaining about Chinese players hacking their shit so the easiest and quickest solution was to ban all of it.

But... PUBG was initially banned and then Chinese censors cleaned up a "government-approved version" of it. Confusing to say the least.

If it's just a bunch of online multiplayer games, then it's just China controlling the flow of information to their citizens and limiting their interactions with citizens of other countries. Under whatever excuse they can. Nothing new. I've heard jokes that the thing to do when beset by Chinese spam or solicitation for fraud is to reply back about Tiananmen Square, whereupon their internet access will be automatically shut down.

To be fair all those games have extremely Toxic online communities.

Out of curiosity, how easy/hard is it to leave China as a citizen? Not over videogames mind you,but just in general?
I think this needs to be reiterated. The reason they gave was essentially for toxic behavior. Is it a drastic action? Of course, but I don't think it was a pro-government free speech quashing thing. I haven't heard anything about Fortnite or League of Legends being a hotbed of Chinese dissidents.

As far leaving China ... I don't think it's a question of whether or not China will let you go, but whether or not another country will let you in first.
