Look at my join date. Now look at my post count. Now back at my join date. Sadly, it isn't OKAY OKAY I STOP NOW Yes, I am a lurker.
Moreover, before I joined, I've spent about half a year lurking around...

The only time I lurk is when a title says something completely different than the actual topic, or when the only thing I can think to say will either get me trolled or I'll just look like a complete idiot.

Of course you can't know that I spent 4 months in the rainforest in Australia (yes, Australia has rainforest, just do a search for the Wet Tropics) or that I spent my whole summer working at a camp.

But the point is, rather than sensibly giving me the benefit of the doubt, you all jump the gun and label me a hypocrite. Rather than ask "But hey, your account's been active for 8 months yet you have so few posts, what's the deal?", everybody goes "Look at this asshole!"

So yeah, sorry for responding so harshly but that kind of thing irks the hell out of me.

And for the doubter...what do you want? A picture? If so say the word, I took over 2200 while I was there.

And oddly enough, this seems to have generated more replies than any of the other topics I've created.

Well 4/50 is not bad. Some threads can go as much as 0/100+ I know an odd one of mine have gone like that. Although you can't make them post and most people here I'm probably not in this bracket only post when they have something worthwhile to say. So something, something, something darkside.

174 posts in the last two and a half years, plus I lurked for half a year before I registered. What do you think? *Hides back into the shadows*

Could be that they read the op to see what it was about, didn't have a opinion and just left.

"Look at this asshole!" is a bit of an overexaggeration now. Anyways, you can't expect people to always be goody-goody and polite, especially when you see something like, what we just saw. I found it slightly humorous that one who barely posted in the many months since joining was complaining about lurkers. I said what my original thought was.

Get outta here with that crap. In those eight months I've either been A)working at a sleepaway camp up in the Catskills, or B) in the rainforest at a research station.

So it wasn't like I was lurking for eight months, I simply was never online, because I didn't have the time or I simply didn't have access to the internet. Since I've been home, I've been on the Escapist regularly.

Why don't you think a little before you assume.
Yes sir mister sir. I'll shall begin stalking you, that way I can take note when you are and are not on the internet and post accordingly. Sorry for any offense I had caused, as I was unaware of the frail state of your ego.

Now if you'll excuse me I have a name and addresses to find.

I don't browse the forums, I just see topics that catch my attention in the little preview window in the corner of every page. By the time I find them they've grown to gargantuan proportions and there's no longer anything for me to contribute.

Which is probably exactly what's happening here, but since you asked I thought I'd chime in.

It's not so much about people being sugary and polite as it is about just slowing your roll for a few seconds.

But anyway, I'm not complaining about lurkers. I'm simply asking why so many people do it. And it's not about me wishing my topics got more posts for the sheer joy of it, it's just that these topics could be a lot better and more engaging if more users just shared their ideas and feelings.

And it seems like a lot of people either figure they don't have anything worth sharing or they just don't want to be bothered with typing a reply. And that's a bummer.

What's actually worth complaining about are the people who feel the need to fill topics up with inane things like "First!" and "Ninja'd!" and so on.

Hey Mr. Sarcasm, check out what I posted earlier:

Several reasons:

People love to start arguments over petty things (point proven with the OP and several repliers).
People don't bother reading replies half the time anyway.
There isn't much point saying something someone else has said a dozen times already.
Threads can become repetitive or low content.
I get annoyed by people easily and it's best if I don't respond in those situations or it will escalate.
Title is interesting, but the topic isn't.

It's probably more of that things they were going to say have already been said, the fact that they have no knowledge or opinion on the subject, don't feel like sharing their opinion, or just don't have anything to respond with. And I honestly have yet to see anybody say "FIRST" or "NINJA'D BIATCH".
