The Nomad Soul. For PC.
I think it was released circa 1999 or so...?
A Quantic Dream game btw - so a predecessor of things like Fahrenheit, etc. With A LOT MORE actual GAME to it!!!
It's an INCREDIBLY ambitious game, with brilliant ideas, a truly, truly massive world to explore. A soundtrack by David Bowie - who you can see "live in convert" from within the game btw!
Unfortunately it was cut down by the limits of technology at the time - it tried to be and do too many things and too much, and the tech just wasn't up to the challenge at the time. I think if they tried similar now they'd be empowered... But not then.
Quite simply this was supposed to be the game that scratched ANY AND ALL itches a gamer might ever have!!!
It was a shooter. And a brawler / fighter. And an adventure game. And a RPG. With vehicle segments. And focus on story.
A brilliant idea where you the player WERE ACTUALLY A PLAYER! You'd been sucked through your computer (a gateway) into a parallel universe and end up essentially possessing a guy's body (I think the starting character is a cop?).
When you eventually die, instead of hitting an end-game situation, your soul migrates to the next body to possess.
Each new body brings with it new strengths, weaknesses, skills, inventories, possessions (like homes, etc.) and professions to take advantage of or trip you up! You could actually try (SHOULD try) to manipulate this process to solve aspects of the game!
The plot involved some kind of story about a demon invading the realm that needed to be stopped or some such. But the setting was essentially "modern+" - realistic now plus 50-odd years of technological and societal progress.
Sadly, due to the tech available, the game had issues - it didn't feel properly coherent... In transition between "styles" you felt like you were changing between games. A fighting game. Then a shooting game. Then a vehicle game. It didn't stick together very well.
BUT DAMN! What an attempt to make something incredible! You just had to love it for it's ideas and ambition and the sheer scope of it all!
