Well, think about it. Think over every single other doomsday prediction you have ever heard, and every one you haven't heard of. Statistically, how likely is this one to actually happen? So the Mayan calendar is ending, what will happen? The same thing that happens when our calendar ends, which is absolutely nothing. It's just a measurement of time, nothing more. Anyone can come up with anything, I can say the world is going to end tomorrow because it'll be sucked up by a random passing black hole. Does that scare you? It shouldn't, because I just made that up. There's never ever any reason to believe or be scared of things just because people say them. Even if the world were to end, unless there was something you could do about it, why would you waste your time being afraid? You have, what, a year and a half left to live? Then get the fuck to it, go out and live as much as you possibly can before the world ends. Do you really want the rest of your short life to be nothing but sitting around moping? And when you wake up the morning after, you'll be happy you've spent that time doing something useful.

The future is not created yet. That is why it is the future.
The word "prediction" is an oxymoron in and of itself.
There is no such thing as knowing what is going to happen.

Also, as already pointed out:
Our dear planet is really a very massive thing. It is not going anywhere.
Life on it is a pretty old and resilient thing. It is not going anywhere.
We are a powerful civilisation, capable of great feats of technology. We are most assuredly not going anywhere.

Think of it this way, you are mortal and death is a certainty for any living creature. To be afraid of a doomsday is to be fearful of death. To be afraid of death is to be fearful of the inevitable. Why fear the inevitable? Might as well work on what isn't inevitable and that is a life worth living for.
That was beautiful.

This calls for the My-Own Calendar

The calendar ends on the 17th, it must mean the end of the world!

(If it actually does, I will be simultaneously gobsmacked and very annoyed)

Are we all dead yet? I've been waiting for the Y2K bug to eat me for over a decade now. Honestly if it doesn't show up soon then i'm just going to have to find something else to have civilization ended by. I hear bird flu is promising.

Two guys already beat me two it, but I'll state it again. Harold Camping is a nut, who said that the world might end in 1994, but 2011 would be a good date as well. Also while the shit is hitting the fan, there have been generations of humans that have dealt with fare worse.

You have to realize that doomsday predictions are predicted by two kinds of people. People who want attention, and people who don't know what the hell they're talking about.

The Mayans that predicted the 2012 apocalypse also predicted that the world would be overrun by jaguars by now, since they had no reasonable way to thin their numbers.

The May 21st is just a church looking for more attention, like the church in Florida looking to burn Korans.

Because it's theological trash and you would believe it even less on a rational level if you were religious. That's saying a lot.

You don't need us to convince you that the world will keep living. You seem to be overwhelmed with the initial emotional response. While emotions aren't a bad thing, they can blur your judgement. What you should do is let your rational side take over, because when you put your mind into these things, you realize they are bogus.

Alright.

It's a load of shite. People can't predict crap today, let alone in ancient times. We can't even get the weather right. Also, if something were in the works, shouldn't we be seeing the dregs of it right now? As in preludes and so on? Nothing. These things don't just pop in. The world does not work that way.
as much as I agree there does seem to be a shitload of natural disasters

the floods in queensland (some fires in WA but thats expected)

the japan earthquake

the earthquake in New zealand

the current disasters in USA

still Id sya its more this stuff being focused on by the media
It does seem like a lot of natural disasters but 'lately' is relative. Each time period as suffered their own slew of natural disasters which are, in some form or another, the same kinds of disasters. Though some might seem more severe than they have in the past, that is expected. As far as earthquakes go, it's fault lines or subduction taking place. (This is a very brief rundown, if you want to learn about subduction, w00t for internet.) The subsequent earthquake can be rather powerful and tsunami's of course, can and do occur due to subduction. There are lots of logical and natural explanations for what's happening to the earth, disasters or not. We don't need to fall victim to the delirium of a man whose been getting it wrong since 1992. Thus, with all of that said, the natural disasters that are seeming 'biblical' are just parts of the earth's natural formation and continual life.

Doomsday is a tarot card, you look at it and make it mean whatever you want it to. I've heard so many doomsday dates it's impossible to take any of that seriously. I say, live your life and don't even bother with doomsday. (Unless its a good excuse for a BBQ) If something bad happens, it happens, don't spend all of your time and all of your tomorrows in fear or something with no tangibility and no concrete evidence to support it. There is only one doomsday prediction that will hold and that is, in roughly about 5 billion years from now when our sun finally consumes all of its fuel and slowly expands until its life ends, earth will be engulfed along with everything else in a dying sun's path. Luckily we will not be around by then and likely, will have moved out of the solar system.

The 21st?That the 2012 thing? If so,the end of the world has nothing to do with a bunch of mayans getting lazy and dying out before they put up 2013.

I know plenty of people have already stated facts to ease your nerves, but think for a second man. Human beings are cockroaches, it would pretty much take the Universe ending to eliminate us. So stop worrying, the only thing to fear is fear itself.

lol. Well at least it's reassuring that there is a ton of evidence to the contrary. It is just my imagination running rampant.

I'm not one with a faith. And logic tells me the chance of such a thing happening is the same on any given day, and that it's astronomically low.

Still, everytime I hear one of these doomsday predictions it DOES freak me out to a certain extent. A couple years ago during my senior year of high school it was some twat with a book saying a giant tsunami would hit the east coast, I was freaked out all school day. Hell during the oil spill some half-baked loon came up with a story that a methane bubble would be released from the gulf and wipe out the planet in a giant fireball, that kept me up all night after reading it.

It's silly to worry about such things. True or not. I know this. Anyone wanna take a solid stab at reassuring me the sun will still rise the 22nd? Because I'm sure I'm not the only one with just a tinge of anxiety about doomsday predictions.
what do you think you've been playing video games for, fun? fuck no! if you are a dedicated gamer then you should be fully trained for any of the world scenario

"When you no longer fear death, you can truly live."

If the world started ending around me right now, I'd have no regrets.

EDIT: Also, fyi, it's impossible for the world to end on any specific date seeing as all of the world is never on the same day.

Plus, May 21st people based their prediction off arbitrary math which starts with them assuming the world is 7000 years old..... It isn't. Not even close. It's like saying Harison Ford is an infant.
