Hmm, well after my Limited Edition of Street Fighter X Tekken came with really crappy extras and didn't include the on-disc DLC characters, plus their stance on 30 FPS Dead Rising 3 PC, I can't say I'll be losing much sleep over this.

well if sony buys them, its majority PS4 exclusives.
if nintendo buy them, its majority WiiU and 3DS exclusives.
if nobody buys them, they continue to spiral downwards and make bad games/decisions

everything sucks for PC gamers in this scenario...

So what you're saying is, assuming a buyout is on the way, there's really only two parties that might go for it?
Pretty much the only people who might be interested and can afford to buy Capcom at the moment are the national conglomerates who dont have significant assets in the gaming sector.

And thats not to say they wouldnt be interested, because Monster Hunter.

Ninty is in no position to consider buying out anything at the moment, much less Capcom.

We have been seeing a lot of mega man in nintendo games lately. Maybe there's something there. Maybe I sound like CNN right now. Fuck it.

I can see this as becoming a good thing, as long as the right company buys up the shares. Still, this doesn't mean that Capcom is immediately going to be stripped for parts and sold off, as they could counter-bid any buyout attempts, should they have the coffers to do so. I can see this affecting their game dev in two ways, either:

1) they always "play it safe," as they've been doing, & continue to release subpar or consumer-unfriendly product, or...

2) they more closely quality-control releases, and are galvanized into becoming competitive and beloved again.

I'm not the most literate when it comes to how stocks and buyouts work in business. Especially when it comes to Japan. But it seems that in a recent turn of events Capcom did not renew their buyout defense policy. So they are now open to being bought by any entity that has the money to sink in to.

Is this really gonna be the case?

Thoughts?
Weeeelll, it could happen, but there are no guarantees.

To start with, buyout protection is not a steel suit of armor. Another company could still totally get you, it would just be harder for them to do it. The idea being that you make yourself a less appealing acquisition than you might otherwise be. That said, a protection plan is not nearly the only way to stay safe - many companies (although the number is slowly dropping) carry 'poison pills'- essentially a way to rack up debt really quickly to ward off investment firms. A buyout protection plan, to the best of my knowledge, is really just a formalized/insured defensive strategy - there are plenty of other ways to stay safe.

All that aside though, this might be a tacit admission on behalf of Capcom that they aren't attractive enough of a target to actually justify the expense of a protection plan.

Alternatively it could be a covert statement of interest - "we wouldn't fight too much if somebody wanted to acquire us".

Ultimately buyouts just happen, and they aren't necessarily bad things. Nobody is going to buy Capcom to strip it and sell it because, honestly, it probably isn't worth that much. More than likely they would be a long term investment or by and large ignored by acquisitions.

Hey, I don't care as long as I can get a decent new Monster Hunter title on a decent platform in the West again.

Most people interested in buying Capcom would be going after two things:

1: The Monster Hunter series. Very popular and Capcom's biggest success story in recent years. It's extremely popular in Japan, and only Japanese companies can buy Capcom's stuff.

2: Street Fighter. With the rising popularity of streaming and competitive gaming, some groups might think the best way to capitalize is to get the most well-known fighting game franchise. Plus, the competitive SF fanbase isn't loyal to any console, they follow Street Fighter wherever it goes.

Most likely, something similar to what happened to Atlus will happen. None of the big Japanese gaming companies are in good enough financial shape to afford a buyout like this. And there's also the chance that nothing happens and Capcom continues on normally.

I hadn't read the first post but now that I see that it's just a stock buy out, all that means is that the board of directors can shift around now :/
if a company with a lot of money like Sega or Nintendo buys every single stock they can then direct the companies future but Capcom holders probably own 51% of the stock to avoid such a thing from happening :( so yeah business as usual it seems... or DLC as usual

This is going to be an interesting fight no matter who gets involved.

And like that you've destroyed half the speculation on that link, bravo sir!

OT: Well I guess either Sony or Nintendo will buy Capcom. My real thoughts are whether Resident Evil fans would prefer to use the PS4 controller or the Wii U game pad.
What about Square-Enix? Are they still considered a Japanese company? I'd love Square-Enix to buy them. They wouldn't ignore PC and they love catering to nostalgic gamers which means old Dante trumps new Dante!
Square and Enix, which now make up Square-Enix after Square essentially bought out Enix couple years ago are a japanese company. Although Enix wasnt a developer of games and more a publisher, essentially its the japanese equivalent of Activision Blizzard where Activision fusioned with Vivendi (Blizzard was just the top dog under Vivendi).

My first thought as to potential companies was Nintendo. Then I thought about a possible merger with Namco. Call it NamCom...or NapCam...or NamCap. I'm not quite sure what their financial situation looks like, but I imagine they could do some good with some of Capcoms IP's. I guess I would just love to see a PowerStone reboot.

Eh, Namco-Capcom might work.

Not if they were to be purchased by a third party company, or another holdings company. In Japan it's not unheard of for random holding firms to just buy up something completely unrelated to it. For example, the Vaio computer brand that was sold by Sony was purchased by Japan Industrial Partners Inc. The only thing really bad about it though is that they'd also be acquiring Capcom's debt, which as of now isn't good. Really a holdings company would be the best bet for this, just like how it was for Atlus. That way, the company can make games multiplatform still. Only real change that needs to be dealt with is Capcom's CEO, Kenzo Tsujimoto, who pretty much has lead everyone to jump ship from Capcom and has been making terrible decision after terrible decision.

Shareholders either invest for a quick profit, buy low, sell high soon after and reinvest elsewhere, or they invest long-term and benefit from dividends paid out on profits. If Capcom isn't reliably profitable then the long-term approach to investing isn't wise. So this decision sounds like it's announcing that shareholders would welcome a buyout and the massive payout it usually comes with.

In the past, when companies have had attempts to buy them, the company doing the buying offers greater than the share price to investors to buy all the stock. For example, when Microsoft tried to buy Yahoo, they offered $41 billion which was approx 60% *above* Yahoo's market value. The shareholders turned down that offer despite its generosity.

So will anyone buy Capcom? Who knows? The current leadership aren't that great as demonstrated by years of poor decisions, poor games, mediocre sales and nothing on the horizon. A change could be just what they need. Just hope EA doesn't buy them out, rename them EA Tokyo, produce a single game and shut them down.

I would rather have Capcom sell its IPs separately than force a company to obtain majority stock. It would be great to have Nintendo buy the rights to Mega Man for one, they have more interest in the poor guy than Capcom does at this point. That would be the best case scenario, other companies won't risk too much, and we get to see fresher installments in Capcom games.

Obviously, it would be kinda cool/lame to see one of the big three own all of Capcom's properties. On one hand if Nintendo were to buy it, they would fill so many gaps in their own library making something for just about everybody on their systems. Yet, knowing that well known 3rd party games like Street Fighter, Resident Evil, Monster Hunter etc. being exclusive to one company would make consumers pretty angry for good reason.

Edit: Let's not forget, can you imagine a post Capcom bought Smash Bros.? That is the stuff dreams right there. :D

I don't care who buys them if they do get bought. I like a solid handful of Capcom games. I would like for them to continue to be made, and hope that those working at the company now (or rather those programing the games) still have some sort of job within game design in the future.
