King's Field? Another FROM title, in the interests of full disclosure I haven't played it, but I've heard it described as a predecessor. Dragon's Dogma (vanilla at least) and Monster Hunter aren't that close, I don't think.
This is what I came here to say, basically.

The King's Field titles are the spiritual predecessor of Demon's Souls. Which is in turn the spiritual predecessor of Dark Souls. I'd recommend checking them out. I plan to try them out here soon when I've got the opportunity to do it.

Dragon's Dogma is pretty similar, by way of gameplay. But you'll want the Dark Arisen expansion if you want something closer toned.

If you're willing to go retro, Zelda 2: The adventure of Link is actually kinda similar. The combat is all about pattern recognition, if you die three times, you have to start over from the first spawn point. It has a level up system where you choose what you want to improve. I haven't played Dark Souls, but I played Demon's Souls and it really felt like a modern day Zelda 2 to me personally.

Gotta agree with the people saying Severance: Blade of Darkness. If you can put up with the outdated graphics and the (likely) hassle of having to patch it to work on a modern PC, it definitely has the same "you gotta time this attack/movement right or you're gunna die" attitude that Dark/Demon's Souls has.

The Witcher 2. Although it's not exactly the same, the combat is challenging, the enemies don't politely wait their turn to attack you like in most modern games, and you can't cancel your attacks once you've committed so you have to think about your attacks or you'll get destroyed.

This is kinda off topic but I don't think I should make another topic about demon souls on the board but it would be awesome if there was a Dark Souls mod that put the Demon Soul system/character/items into dark souls world.

where any enemy can kill you no matter how well geared you are.
Oh, how true is that...And some of the traps are friggin instakills, too. Others "only" do, like, 75% of your max health, so assuming you're at full health (which you probably aren't) you'll be fine.

I've still never finished the game because IT'S FUCKING HARD.
I finished it with at least two characters, dunno, maybe more - I certainly played all, can't recall if I finished it. What can I say - I had no life at the time.

You have a choice of 4 characters, I go for the dwarf warrior or the knight personally.
Yeah, those would be the easiest to play, as they have a shield (the knight uses swords, the dwarf has axes), otherwise you could block with a weapon but weapons can break (as can shield, there is just more of them). I personally like the amazon more - she's using staffs and similar weapons with longer reach, she also has a good dodge. And for the record, the fourth character is a barbarian who uses two handed swords. Each has a different playthrough...well, mostly - they go through mostly the same levels, only start at different points and in different order and there are some permutations in the levels.

I should really go and play that game again
Yeah, me too.

Which is a bit funny in retrospect, as I recall it was the first game to feature dynamic lightning and shadows, which was thought as a huge breakthrough. Oh how it looks now :D But also, you could just pick up and use random environment as weapons, like a chair or a severed limb.

Yeah, my friend had an amazing PC when it first came out, so we played it at his house - the graphics were pretty awesome (for then), and having played it against recently the grim atmosphere has still held up pretty well. Beating guys to death with their buddy's severed arm is also still fun.

I know there's something out there more challenging than Dark souls and it involves a very small hacksaw and a forest in the Amazon.

Balls to the wall hard mode complete with many chances to perma die.

If you buy it on GoG.com you won't have any problem with the configuration. And please don't complain about graphics in a game that it's 12 years old, it's idiotic.

And so is necro-ing a thread with an off hand comment, as it wastes other ppls time who don't notice it's an old thread until they see their own 3 month old comment

Look at King's Field, the series that Souls grew out of. It's a more traditional first-person dungeon crawler a lot like Ultima Underworld.

It has a spinoff series, Shadow Tower, of which Shadow Tower: Abyss has recently recieved a translation patch. Give it a shot, you'll see how much it influenced Souls despite being a very different game.

I've never played King's Field, but I do remember finding out about it through this video:

Holy crap, this game doesn't fuck around.

Hah, that's practically a KF tradition. In Abyss you can be insta-killed by a falling segment of the wall within like 5 seconds.

FROM are massive trolls and I love it.

I'll ignore the pointless necro, since I actually didn't realise the it was on GoG.

Was I complaining about the graphics? I said they were outdated, which they are (unless your seriously going to try and argue they look as good as modern games), not bad - they were amazing for the time.
