I've only played 1hr 50 minutes to keep it under the steam refund time, so you couldn't call this a fully informed review, but here's my impressions so far.

Played the first 2 single player missions, took about 1hour 30 minutes (probably a bit less due to pissing around in the menus for a few minutes first).
The first with the marines was a super basic tutorial, literally how to move, how to attack, how to use a unit's special moves, how to pick up health packs and finally how to use the marines drop pod & sacred standard mechanics. It took you on a long circular route round the map to do this, but it did manage to distract you with some nice visuals on the level and a bit of exposition.
The second was with orks. It introduced their scrap mechanic, building and resource collection. And it dragged, badly. Again it took you on a long linear route round the map but this felt a lot more noticeable, whether they just hadn't hidden it as well as the first mission or it just stood out more to me because I'd noticed it in the first I couldn't say. It had taught you all the mechanics in the first 1/4 of the map (and I really don't see why it couldn't have been put in the first mission, barring the scrap mechanic) and the rest was just a boring, linear pile of meh. I was bored before I got the supposed end and then you had an extra extended "defend Ork gun while it powers up to fire" sequence, mainly spent sitting around waiting for the Eldar to attack. Then it turns out you have to do this 3 or 4 more times.

By this time I had about 1/2 hour left so I thought I'd better try out the MP.
The 20 minutes I played weren't bad, felt pretty solid as an RTS and the basic idea behind the one game mode they have was pretty easy to pick up (although I've watched a load of MP, previews, so I suppose that's kinda cheating). But, it is only one game mode and there are a grand total of 8 maps, couple of 1v1, couple of 2v2 etc and IIRC 4 of 3v3 although you can play with fewer players on the larger maps if you want.

Overall it seems like a solid base, it's a decent game, but currently doesn't really have enough content to justify the price for me. If I was super into multiplayer that might be different, but I generally play for the campaign and a good multiplayer is a bonus that keeps me playing afterwards and while the first mission didn't exactly wow me, it was okay, passable. Second mission put me right off. It might get better, but after that I'm not willing to risk it.

Finally the 40K/older DoW fan mini rant, which isn't as relevant. The Orks...while the voices aren't as good as they were, I'm not going to complain too much, but by Gork and Mork, the dialogue between the Warboss and Gorgutz after the ork mission...no ork has ever spoken the words "take care" as a friendly means of saying goodbye.

Anyone else got any further in the campaign? Does it get less shit?

It's... alright. Campaign gets fairly meaty (hope you enjoy a 3rd tutorial mission with the Eldar), though the cyclic nature of the faction missions gets a little annoying since you don't really get a lot of time to get into the groove of things and each mission dumps new stuff onto you to learn. Orks was the weakest of the lot, but the SM and Eldar (and overall campaign) is pretty solid. Character-wise it kinda... missed the mark though - it feels like they tried to go for a far more serious take than anything, but missed the hammy charm of 1 and the 'band of brothers' feel of 2. It's nice to see Jonah Orion again though.

I had some reservations with the gameplay, but it's overall quite fun. Feels like a more polished return to DoW 1, with more micro and hard counters. Bases don't really feel that... important though, especially in multi-player given the MOBA-esque style they went for, doesn't really feel like there's any rhyme or reason for building placement. The hero units are also fun to drop in and surprisingly well balanced, though the A.I. doesn't quite... deal with them appropriately, I've found, often focusing fire on a basic squad and not the 40-foot Imperial Knight currently fucking a hole into the side of their base.

The multiplayer is disappointing though, which, to be fair, is something I've kinda been expecting with DoW games since Winter Assault fucked everything up. As said, very MOBA-y, which gets annoying since pushes rely so much on having a hero unit down for them to be successful, which can make things awfully one sided if a hero gets taken down quick. The 3-stage assault is also kinda annoying, since it can lead into some awfully long games. The lack of maps and game types is a real killer though - you'd think with a focus on heroes they could throw in an assassination type, or something.

Overall it's... alright. Solid 5/10. Get's a +1 for Jonah Orion but a -1 for Gabriel 'watch me backflip in Terminator Armour' Angelos.

...at least it's better than Soulstorm.

Yeah it definitely falls under the issue of "new version of an old game that has about as much content as the base package for the old game did, but is still held up to the content standard of the old game plus the expansions which is still probably cheaper than the new game right now"

Game wise it's solid though
Game 1 gave us Space Marines, Eldar, Orks, AND Chaos Space Marines.

Game 2 gave us Space Marines, Eldar, Orks, AND Tyranids.

Game 3 gives us Space Marines, Eldar, AND Orks :p

They could have worked in the Imperial Guard this time instead of relegating them to expansion only factions.

2/5 stars, yet gets 5/10? Shouldn't that be 4/10?

Sounds like the game is some sort of DOTA/Starcraft mix up right down to pushing lanes which isn't really what I want from a DoW game. Sounds like I'll be giving this one a miss.

The only positive about this game is that it made me give ultimate apocalypse another try, and it's amazing.

That's what bothers me the most. There's nothing in this 60 dollar game that a mod made by fans for a 10 dollar game didn't do better.

More races? Check.
More units? Check.
More maps? Check.
More skirmish modifiers? Hey, do you want nigh-unkillable heroes? A game mode that you must kill the worker units to win? Economic wins? Nuclear weapon wins? All in ultimate apocalypse.

There's nothing that dow 3 offers that ultimate apocalypse didn't nail.

Well that sucks. I had a bad feeling when I learned it was leaning more towards MOBA-style gameplay, but I was hoping the other elements would make up for that. I should have known of course that "hope is the first step on the road to disappointment."

Maybe I'll look into it in a few years, after the price drops and the inevitable expansions are out (no Guard, no buy).

Poor game. Its basically just Warcraft 3, in space. I wouldn't be surprised if some form of DOTA comes about from this.

Well, I would have probably played the game this weekend.

However, those geniuses tasked with packaging my CE copy of the game managed to literally glue one of the game discs into the lenticular cover.

So... what with the upcoming holiday hereabouts, I'll be playing this on Tuesday at the earliest. Yay. -__-

You do realize that none of the dow game had guard at launch. They were always included in one of the standalone expansions.

OT: I'm enjoying it. The factions feel really different from each other and the game looks fantastic, plus the elite unit system works really well. I still doubt I'll really do much with the multi though since I don't have the temper for rts games multi, but Ill screw around in it a bit more. Hopefully they add a last stand mode like they did with dow2, cause that was fun as hell.

Oh I know, I'm just saying based on what I've seen and heard it'll take something like a Guard expansion to pique my interest this time around (the Guard was technically playable in vanilla DoW1 with controllable Guardsmen squads and Leman Russ tanks in a few campaign missions, but I'm just splitting hairs at this point). Glad to hear people like yourself are enjoying it, though.

I don't recall the guard really being playable in vanilla dow1. They did show up though, they show up in dow3 also, have really nice looking infantry too. I think technically one of your heroes is part of the guard, Lady Solaria. Shes the Imperial Knight. I think they are much more of part of the guard then a space marine.

For a Dawn of War game to come out with a roster this small? It feels so naked and cold.

I mean shit, Space Marines, Eldar and Orks. Bullshit, that's all the game has.

Where's Chaos? Where's the Sisters of Battle? Where's the Imperial Guard? Where's the Dark Eldar? Where's the Necrons? Where's the Tyranids? Where's the Tau? I repeat, Where the fuck is Chaos?

I can understand not having Abhumans, they're too small a faction. But at least three of the missing factions I just mentioned should have been in the base game. This is 2017, and having a Warhammer game this tiny faction wise is just unacceptable.

Reminder: the original Dawn of War came out in 2004, it had 4 factions.

This roster is fucking heresy, dude. Relic done fucked it.

Inspiration comes full circle then. ^_^

Also, copying Warcraft III is never a bad thing...

At least that first trailer was pretty awesome.
