Hey, I was just wondering whether Dead Island was worth getting, or if I shouldn't waste my money.

I've been waiting for input on this myself. I have a friend who last night said he was gonna play a little and tell me if I should get it to play it with him and the jerk never got back to me.

Perhaps it's so good he hasn't been able to leave the game!
On the other hand.... I checked some reviews for the game and thought it looked pretty damn bad. >.<

Pre-ordered the game from England. It is now being delivered to me so I hope its good. I got it fairly cheap though. Better than buying from an Aus retailer. Will probably charge $80 for the PC version and $100 for the consoles.

Hell I'm not looking for the holy grail of video games, just something that's super-fun to play with/against some of my real life buddies.

Hoping for feedback about it as well, I'm very half-and-half about this game and I'll be keeping an eye on it. If it's good, I'll probably save the money up to get it in a few weeks, if not, I'll bump it up to the 'I'll get it eventually pile' with Duke Nukem.

I did preorder the game and played for about 3 hours last night. I will give you a little insight. First and foremost I love zombie games of all type so I am biased but this games is very different from what I have played before.

Graphically this game is great. The scenery and zombies all are very detailed, distrubingly so. Really sets an extremely creepy tone and feel.

Combat is also really well tuned although gauging distance when swinging a weapon will take getting used to but once you have it it becomes simple and enjoyable. I started my first game with Sam B who is a blunt weapon user. Over time you will level up, although is takes a back seat from the rest of the gameplay.

Expect a lot of mindless looting of suitcases and trashcans which I felt distracted from whats going on a little but you will need and want everything you can find beacuse repairing and upgrading weapons takes money and a lot of it higher up. So go crazy on the loot. Once I was past the prologue looting wasnt such a distraction.

Overall, I would highly recommend this game. Not many games have ever made me jump in surprise but this one is great at it. Very creepy, very fun, very good looking, with extreme replayability. If you don't have it, get it.

I would be happy to elaborate or answer any questions if any come up.

Excellent, i'm glad I've preordered it now.
Couple of questions
1, What system did you play it on?
2, How open is the 'Open-World' For example can you simply ignore everything and head straight for the other side of the island, or are you gently nudged into a linear-ish route?
3, What's the driving like an does it switch into third person for it?

You ever played Dead Rising? It's just like that with a new camera angle.

I tried it at a mates place and I was bored after half an hour, zombies are just so very boring to me, and the story... ah well it's your everyday zombie story.
But my mate adores zombies and he will jizz his pants over every one of these, so I guess the end question is do you still like zombies?

Agreed with you, here. I also played the game last night with a few hours, so allow me to give my own thoughts as well. *PC player, will probably get it again on 360 to game with my console friends.*

Beyond all the PC release shenanigans and the shitstorm that followed it, let me just talk about the game itself.

Visually, the game takes some getting used to. The outdoor environment is absolutely drowned in brightness. I see what they were going for here, and it's a pretty cool visual direction. But it's something I honestly haven't seen before and it took a bit for it to sink in.

In terms of atmosphere, I think they did a great job with it. The bright cheery look of the island, with the gorgeous blue water make a sharp contrast to the grim events actually taking place. The creepy ambiance really made me feel a profound uneasiness, playing with headphones on really helped too.
I was wandering around with my friend, soaking in the environment and ambiance. And every now and then I'd hear a sudden and load snarling of a zombie, pretty much every time it immediately made me jerk my head around to find that son of a ***** zombie before it found me. yikes!

Now for the actual gameplay. I only played a bit more than an hour, but the basis of it is really fun. Zombies can actually pose a huge threat in small handfuls and it's pretty difficult to focus your aim to their faces. As such, zombies can take a lot of effort to kill. And when there's a bunch of them, you're in for trouble.
Weapon durability is there, meaning you can't hack a crowd of zombies to the floor without paying for it (Literally, or by breaking your weapon for good.) Different types of weapons handle very differently. From oars have very long range, but break easily. Heavy crowbars are very slow, require a lot of stamina, and are very strong. Small hammers swing quickly, but have very short range, etc.
I haven't progressed far enough to see how the RPG elements play out, but the elements are there and from what I've seen, are really diverse. Initially, every character plays pretty much the same. But later on, your strengths will begin to shine.

Why do I like the game? The coop. I'm a huge coop junkie and this game really appeals to me. I'd recommend it to anyone who loves a good coop games with their friends, although it's not something I would play by myself. (Not Dead Island's fault, I'm this way with lots of other coop games as well.)

Of course this is all when we managed to get the game to work. Which at the time, we used hamachi to connect to each other via LAN. It ran very well, absolutely no lag or framerate drops at all.

But I am quite early in the game, still. I don't think I can answer many more questions, but I thought I'd offer my thoughts of it.

Overall, I love it.

1. PS3
2. Fairly open. The way it works is when you accept a quest and your walking, or driving, to it there are several places off the beaten path. Usually you will find weapons, and items by exploring. Also, a chance to get some more kills and xp. I havent strayed too far because from what I can tell the "deeper" and "farther" you get from where you start the zombies get stronger. So, it is a mix of leading and exploration but there is so much to see you wont notice nor mind. At least I didn't. There are multiple paths to every quest or objective. I could be wrong since I am not too far. The map is large and could be sectional based on the story chapter your on. I am anxious to find out.
3. Driving- I have only driven a few times and its ok, nothing special. Just like Far Cry 2 and does remain 1st person. It was cool when I ran a bunch of zombies over, for reduced xp, and my windshield cracked and I couldnt see. The next moment my character punched the window out and I could see again. Small detail but cool.

Dead Rising 2 - crappy time limits + Borderlands + melee combat = Dead Island.

Yeah, it's alright. Wholesome free-roaming zombie-bashing fun. Has bugs and glitches out the arse, but nothing that breaks the game.

Oh yeah, and the story and characters are complete crap. Fortunately, in this case I don't think it really matters. But if that's what you're looking for, look elsewhere.

I havnt finished the game yet so I cant comment on the story or majority of the characters. The gameplay is pretty solid though. Vehicles are a little touchy and Ive never really been a fan of weapon degredation but it works for this game

As zombie games go it seems a bit mediocre with some neat ideas. I would wait for a price downgrade but its easily worth $30-40

You can find my opinions on it here [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.311523-My-theory-about-Dead-Island?page=2].

I think it's a blast, basically.

The game is worth playing if you play online with people/friends that talk and if you attack with the analog sticks, which is a nice change (except if you're on computer). The graphics are absolutely beautiful although I found some problems with shadows, and bugs where you can get stuck. Combat as a whole is fun because you don't get a million guns to blow your enemies away because it's mainly focused around melee, but the vechile driving can be a ***** especialy when,

When you get the armored truck from Jin and her dad at the end of the Act 1.

The game is fun and pretty solid but if free-roaming, skill trees, and melee combat aren't your thing then don't play the game.

Couldn't play it, kept crashing before I could finish any quests.

Seems a lot like if you mashed borderlands and some zombie game together, which I was under the impression was the idea.

Take the open world and quest setup of Borderland's, zombies, and combat similar to that of Dark Messiah of Might and Magic(Seems nearly identical, to me, really) and you have Dead Island.

I'd say it's worth a buy, hopefully they fix up the bugs a bit.
