How come whenever a hero in a game/comic/movie/book/cereal box has a beloved grandparent, there's only ever the one??

People do the same thing when referring to their grandmother in a derogatory manner! "My grandma could make a better thread than this!!!"

But where's your other grandma?? Personally I think it would be more insulting to know that both your grandmothers are better than I am--after all, if you come from a family of teenage motherhood, your grandmother could potentially be in her forties, and therefore more capable of potentially beating me at things I attempt.


Before I get any more garbled, I sum up by asking: Why? Why do people only ever mention one grandparent at a time?

I think it's great how you look at these things like they're stupid, but when you think about it, it actually makes sense, mainly your fist point about only one beloved grandparent.

I've only got one living grandparent. It's been a mixed blessing.

Good things:
My mom's mother, from whom I get my screwball sense of humor, is still alive.
My dad's mother, who called me "spawn of Satan" on multiple occasions, is burning in Hell. She died when I was eight. I was conceived out of wedlock (my parents had a shotgun wedding), so I was either "spawn of Satan" or "that little bastard". It didn't help that I turned into Rosemary's Baby when granny forced my mother (an agnostic) to take me to a Catholic Mass when I was four. I've had an irrational fear of churches ever since---they give me the creeps.

Neutral things:
My mom's dad, an alcoholic who abused my grandmother but later sobered up and tried to make amends, died in 1990 (when I was 13). At his Catholic funeral I couldn't shake the feeling that forces greater than myself were trying to kill me---as a polytheist this tends to color my views on theology.

My dad's dad died in 1982. I was too young (five) to remember anything about the old guy.

Hey...I really tried to word this to not be a comment on real people's real dead grandparents. I was only trying to point out a cliche in both the entertainment media and a common colloquialism.

I refer to my Grampa on my mom's side as (duh,) Grampa - and I use two different pronunciations of Bobbie (Yiddish word for grandmother, pronounced buh-bee or bub-bee) and the Yiddish word for Grandfather (Zaidy). So, if someone says their grandma could do more pushups than you, they could be referring to a specific grandparent - and not their Nonna (Itallian!).
