Alright, so I am 24 pages into Anne McCaffery's Dragonflight, and so far I am liking the universe but... I am really confused at what is really going on.

Like I got that Fax is some bad guy, but F'lar and F'nor was at his Hold but then are told to stop him..?

Also the start was at another Hold, I believe Ruatha Hold, is where Lessa the main character is..?

I know this might be confusing but could someone explain to me excactly whats happening or maybe some tips to better understand the book in general? I feel like they have thrown a lot at me in just 24 pages.

I'm pretty sure Dragonflight isn't the first book.
That might be a reason.
It says: The first Dragonriders of Pern Novel at the bottum.

The Dragonriders of Pern is one of those series I never did read in order, merely grabbing books as I went through the library. It's a very enjoyable series, though I'm afraid I can't help you on this one. It's been ages since last I read Dragonflight.

Goodness it has been forever since I read those books. I honestly don't remember the plot for the first book. If I remember right there is no real one 'main character' but a bunch of main characters, so it can flit around a bit. If you're asking what a 'Search' is, it is them flying around and finding potential dragonrider candidates, since not every person can be one. The Thread was always the real bad guy to me.

It's been a while since I read this one but here goes...

Fax is the bad guy who took over Ruatha Hold, slaughtering the original ruling family. He is arrogant and looks down on even the dragonriders. Lessa wants revenge against him.
F'lar and F'nor are at the Hold to conduct a Search for a female dragonrider for a queen dragon. Jora was the original Weyrwoman, but she died.

Oh, okay, that explains a bit more now. Still slightly confused, but now I get what they are doing a bit more now. :) Thanks.

I'd keep reading. McCaffrey does that a couple of times, where she throws you into some random hold and just goes with it. I think White Dragon starts like that also. Just keep going, it comes together gradually. There could be a glossary too.

if you think that's confusing, just wait... then again, the confusing parts that come later are actually the most logistically satisfying parts i've ever seen/read in... anything...

in case that was confusing:
i'm talking about time travel... i really like the time travel mechanics that are used... going back in time to find out where everyone went, only to find they haven't actually gone anywhere so you bring them back to the future with you, facilitating the circumstances that made you go back in the first place... if time travel ends up existing, this is how i hope it works...

As for the Search and Jora:

The dragons in the weyrs normally have one main breeding pair, the partners of which form the ruling pair. This consists of the head gold dragon in the weyr and the last dragon to impregnate her (normally a bronze but that's because bronzes are the biggest and strongest, never a green because they're female). Jora was the last gold rider who recently died, before she died her dragon laid one gold egg. There's actually supposed to be more than one gold normally but Jora didn't take good care of her dragon.

Dragons are choosy with who they bond to and the Search is about visiting the local holds and bringing back as many potential candidates as possible. Whilst the bottom three colours can seemingly bond to any sex bronzes bond to male and golds to female. F'lar has taken a personal interest in the future of his weyr and is leading the Search because firstly if the young dragon doesn't bond it dies and secondly because the character of the lead woman is important in it's own right because she's effectively in charge of the weyr.

I hope those helped and I hope I didn't spoil anything.
thank you. Not just you but everyone has helped a lot. :)
