I was flirting with the super cute Australian dj at my local radio station and while looking up Australian bands to have something to talk to her about, I discovered The Veronicas.

Turns out she was married, but it worked out because I wound up seriously loving The Veronicas and they got me into electro-pop in general.

I could never say I have a single favourite band... but I'll mention a few of the top tier ones.

Opeth: I believe that would actually be a band I found because of the Escapist. That or following Wikipedia links from other metal bands.

Ayreon: I was listening to some other progressive metal stuff on YouTube when I saw a link to an Ayreon song. I listened to it and I didn't really like it, thought it didn't have enough impact to be called metal. I later stopped being an idiot about music and realized they were one of the most amazing bands I had ever heard regardless of genre.

Pain of Salvation: Probably a band I found after finding Ayreon, or around the same time. This is because after getting into progressive metal I was looking for it all the time, I think I found this band through Wikipedia as well, or perhaps YouTube again.

TL;DR: Youtube and Wikipedia links are great.

LastFM.

That's how I find most of the bands that I like.

I also discovered Rise Against when I was playing Burnout 3: Takedown. Paperwings reamins one of my favourite songs to this very day.

I don't really have a favourite band but I've discovered many groups and singers that I like via random YouTube adventures. (as much as I despise that site at times)

Well, if David Bowie counts then via my parents, if not then via my best friend.

the name made me giggle, so I looked them up on iTunes, and it was love at first listen. Love me some Elbow.

I heard MUSE on the radio about 5 years ago, when I was 11. Starlight, specifically, as it was just after Black Holes & Revelations was released. I thought the song was really good, but lacked the knowledge of how to find more. Anyway, I heard the song again at my childminder's house - her eldest daughter was listening to them. I asked if I could listen with her, and she said I could. I thought they were really good, but kind of on and off about it.

At some point later I discovered Youtube, and then linked the two things in my head. I spent weeks upon weeks working my way through their songs, discovering just how much they'd done, how varied their style was and - most importantly - how mind-blowingly amazing they are. Then it sort of grew over time, and now my room is plastered with their image, my iPod dominated with their sound and my body clad in a hoody with their name on it. One day, I'll work up enough money and be fortunate enough to secure myself a ticket (those bastards sell fast). And it will be the best thing ever, as they're generally agreed to be the best live act in the world.

What a nice story :D

EDIT: It just occurred to me that this is actually a really good opportunity to potentially introduce new people to MUSE, because they might follow the same sort of process described above, and that would be amazing, so here's the song I mentioned.

Hope you enjoy it!

My favorite band is System of a Down.

First heard them when one of my brother's friends loaned him their "Mezmerize" album. It was the first album I ever listened to from beginning to end.

My favorite band is Sylosis and I found them because my favorite record label is nuclear blast and so while listening to a Soilwork music video I saw a link to the song "After Lifeless Years" music video and once I listened to it out of curiosity I became hooked and they became my favorite band.

It's not that hard to discover Queen, but Bohemian Rhapsody, as well as the "Don't stop me now" scene in Shaun of the Dead certainly made me look into more of their songs.

the current ones:

Pearl jam: after hearing Alive and Even Flow in guitar hero 3 I was aware that the band even exists, and after hearing one of my brothers CD's (guess which album it was, Ill give you ten hints...) I grew fond of the band
Soundgarden: one of my friends is learning film in our highschool, and they had a project about music videos, and one of them was black hole sun. after I heard I listened to more songs (youtube is magical, isnt it?) and I just freaking love them...

Well, I don't think I love one band so much that it's my favorite since every band got its own style but the latest was Gogol Bordello on Jay Leno.

I learned about Radiohead by paying moderate attention to the modern music scene.

I was sitting reading Kerrang! and I read their name (Drop Dead, Gorgeous) and thought wow that's a mildy cool play on words. Listened to the song, They'll Never Get Me (Have A Word), and fell in love like instantly.

I found most of my favourite bands because of my dad and what he listens to.

My favourite band has to be Dire Straits, which I found because I heard "Sultans of Swing" on the radio. And it was awesome.
