Blind Guardian: Some guy made a animation on Newgrounds and used "The Bard's Song" and I looked them up.

I found The Rolling Stones in a really dark way.
It was my mums' uncles' funeral and he'd asked to play 'Brown Sugar' when everyone walked out. I knew about The Stones but it wasn't until then that I really listened to them

Back in the day when I didn't spend almost anytime on music I happened to hear a song that reminded me of someone on a radio, but I did not know at the time what song it was or who made it. I started listening to the radio more and more just to find that song again. Once I did finally find it I showed it to that person and I got to know more songs by that artist. Pretty much got me hooked on my first favorite band and music in general.

I bought the Halo 2 soundtrack and recognised one of the artists listed - Incubus. I recalled listening to their 1999 album Make Yourself a few years earlier and quite enjoying it so I decided to check out what they had done since.

Long story short, the combined albums of Incubus now have more total plays on iTunes than the rest of my library combined three times over.

I discovered a lot of the music I love today thanks to the soundtrack CD of the original 'The Matrix' movie.

"Rock is Dead" by Marilyn Manson ? 3:11
"Spybreak! (Short One)" by the Propellerheads ? 4:00
"Bad Blood" by Ministry ? 5:00
"Clubbed to Death (Kurayamino Mix)" by "Rob D" ? 7:26
"Prime Audio Soup" by Meat Beat Manifesto ? 6:17
"Leave You Far Behind" by Lunatic Calm ? 3:13
"Mindfields" by The Prodigy ? 5:40
"Dragula (Hot Rod Herman Remix)" by Rob Zombie ? 4:37
"My Own Summer (Shove It)" by Deftones ? 3:34
"Ultrasonic Sound" by Hive ? 4:54
"Look to Your Orb for the Warning" by Monster Magnet ? 4:42
"Du Hast" by Rammstein ? 3:54
"Wake Up" by Rage Against the Machine ? 6:04

This was the CD that actually got me interested in music in general.
These are the ones I would actually count among my 'favorite' bands:

Monster Magnet
Rob Zombie
The Prodigy
Rammstein
Deftones

With Marilyn Manson in a lesser extend (stuff like The Last Day Of Earth, Posthuman and Vodevil still get to me).

This is the most embarrassing anecdote I have ever told in public but..

When I met my current girl-partner we bonded over music, and so I went online and just started looking for new music so we'd have more to talk about. I stumbled on a page of someone else's favourite industrial bands, wound up listening to 'Honour' by VNV Nation and discovered EBM.

I'm not sure that counts as discovering my 'favourite' band, but 'most influential' certainly.

The funniest thing is she absolutely hates all the music I actually like, she was just really happy to have someone to go goth clubbing with.

I was listening to the radio while driving. A song by Tantric came on and it was just what I was looking for.

And I normally hate listening to the radio because they play the same thing way too much. Whodathunk?!

for me it was from the main song of THPS4:
Oh dear god! Such a nostalgic song for me XD Played THPS4 too many times/hours to count hehe

OT: As for my favourite band of the moment, Perfume, I'm learning Japanese and on the learning forum I frequent, there was a "What are you listening to now?" thread... and... yeah... someone posted a 2 minute extract from the song Nee(ねぇ) by Perfume - I'd never really heard much Japanese music before so it was something really different and original for me :). The same can be said of the dancing :D.

All Youtube has is that extract: [Full video here: http://www.metacafe.com/watch/5502003/pv_perfume_nee_video_oficial/]

As for favourites overall, Red Hot Chili Peppers and perhaps Daft Punk, music channels I guess? Radio? I can't really remember. They were both in the charts when I was younger.

For The Gorillaz I heard them on VH1 a long time ago, it was their song 19-2000 Soul Child Remix...

For Nirvana well they're my moms favorite band so I really just got into them when she lent me her CDs...

For Dinosaur Jr. I found them through Nirvana... I saw the bassist, Krist Novoselic, wear one of their shirts once...

My favorite band is the Northern Irish band Ash. I have been a big fan of their music for nearly 6 years now.

I got into them because the music video for a song called "Clones" they had was in my favorite video (Star Wars: Republic Commando) as an unlockable. After that I watched Shaun of the Dead for the first time and heard both of their songs in it (I found this out after purchasing the soundtrack, I used to be big on soundtracks). The tracks were "Meltdown" and "Orpheus" I believe.

I was hooked on those tracks and Clones so I went to my local Best Buy and amazingly enough they had the most recent album by Ash called Meltdown. and thats it really. I bought all the past records after that via Amazon and the album they released after Meltdown is certainly my favorite album of all time. Its called Twilight of the Innocents.

Heres a track from that record: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5maBg3v4gk

I discover Daft Punk from their song "One More Time". I was channel surfing in the music area and then I stop to listen to this catchy beat (the beginning bit to the song). As the song played I was simply stun just by how awesome it was. After the video was finish, I spend the rest of the channels surfing to find that song again!
Really? I discovered them because of Interstella 5555 shown on:
Off topic... I wish they would bring back Tom... I miss him.

Was about 9 years old and went to K-Mart to buy a tape for my brand new sony walkman, saw NiN's Pretty Hate Machine's cover and thought it was neat looking.
Loved them from then on.

I found Metric through the movie Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. I heard the version of Black Sheep in the movie was a cover of a song they did. So I looked em up.

^ This is my favorite song by them. So awesome.

I never go out looking for music, I just find it. It usually happens when I hear a song in a game/show/movie, or my friend loads up my external with random tunes when I send it over to his place. Like the TC, I then go looking for what else they may have done.
