So Escapist users, how did you discover your favourite band?

Well, at the moment I genuinely can't figure out which I like most out of four bands. It's more likely that it'll be either Into Eternity or Scar Symmetry, but I'll say all four of them just to be sure; Into Eternity, Scar Symmetry, Before The Dawn and Disarmonia Mundi.
Into Eternity (who were my favourite band for about two years, but I listened to them too much and now I like them about as much as I like Scar Symmetry) I found through Wikipedia. Yeah. That's how much of a loser I was two years ago. I found bands through Wikipedia. But it was worth it. Into Eternity are great.
I found Scar Symmetry on Butchdoggi's youtube channel (I'd heard of them a lot of times but never listened to them), and I liked them. A lot. Like, a lot a lot.
Before The Dawn I found a couple of years ago through Encyclopaedia Metallum, at first I didn't like them at all (I wasn't too into the clean vocals, they were a bit too melancholic), but a few months ago I re-found them and the vocals started to grow on me, now I have an undying love for Before The Dawn.
I can't remember how I found Disarmonia Mundi. I think I either found them on Youtube or through someone's profile on Last.fm. But it's a lot more likely I found them on related videos somewhere on Youtube. It's mainly their song Perdition Haze that got me into them (although I'm more into their Fragments of D-Generation album now). It's my most-played song on Last.fm by a long way.

I don't think I have a favorite band, necessarily. I've gone through various phases where I really liked a band, but it never lasts.

I used to really like the Beatles because my parents had a bunch of Beatles albums and this lasted for a number of years. Around high school, I got into Led Zeppelin in a big way, but I also got into Jethro Tull around that same time. Later I became enamored with Black Sabbath, Jimi Hendrix, and various others that escape me at the moment.

So I'm a classic rock snob, I suppose. i haven't really like new music since the early 90's when I was into Nirvana and Blind Melon, whom I may like more due to their cult status than genuinely enjoying their music. They just didn't reach the heights of their contemporaries did before the lead singer OD'ed. Since then, it seems like music has been on a downhill slide, at least as far as it's ability to appeal to my tastes, which is probably good business sense for them.

But I don't have a favorite band anymore. I have an era and style of music that I prefer. I have various acts that I enjoy and specific songs from those artists that I rate as favorites. But every artist has their clinkers. Their dud album and every album has dud songs. i see no reason to play favorites.

I really like Muse, Judas Priest and pearl Jam. My friend just said "you heard of this" then my mind was blown away.

I discovered Fall Out Boy by originally disliking them cause My music taste originally came from my brother and his friends' music and they didn't like FOB, but then I heard "This Ain't a Scene, Its an Arms Race" and I just fell in love, and now I've got all their songs on my computer.

My dad loves Voltaire as well, and his and my mother's favourite song is "Raven's land"


He had the rest of "The devils bris" album which I have heard many times and has since become one of my favourite albums of all time. He also sang "Brains" in the "Little rock of horror" episode of "The grim adventures of Billy and Mandy" which is one of my favourite cartoons from when I was a kid, so that went a long way into me liking him and becoming my favourite artist.

I found out about Mr Bungle by researching the projects of Slayer`s drummer, Dave Lombardo. This led me to Fantomas, an avant garde group who`s vocalist, Mike Patton, I was amazed by. Then began researching Mike Pattons projects, which led me to Tomahawk, Faith No More, and Mr Bungle. After listening to their eponymous album I was smitten with the rapid and abrasive, yet strangely moving music.

A dad of my friend played a CD in his car when he was driving me home once. I asked who it was since I thought it was good. He told me it was Kent, and the rest is history.

...details, but I was hanging out with some friends and a fellow musician put on The Mars Volta's first album. I was like, wow, somebody actually makes music like this!

Mine's The Arctic Monkeys, I'd heard of them before but hadn't really listened to them before the band I was in wanted to cover "I Bet You Look Good On the Dancefloor" so I gave it a listen, then the singles, then the rest of the album, then the other albums. After that I was (and continue to be) hooked.

My other favourite band (It's hard to choose) Rush, I discovered through playing the drums to Tom Sawyer on Rock Band. Moving Pictures is still probably my favourite album of all time.

I was in a special event for classic rock bands, where they showed live concerts of the best bands in rock history.

That's where I discovered that my favourite band is Pink Floyd, and that my favourite musician is David Gilmour..
I bought a classic Fender Stratocaster Guitar (like his)...only with a manageable budget and I play most of his Solo's today.
That was 5 years ago..Nothing has changed.

I first heard of Jimmy Eat World while I was at a concert where they were a support act. Heard "The Middle" a few years later in Guitar Hero: World Tour and they've been on pretty much every playlist I make ever since

During the heyday of "Alejo & Valentina", an argentinan web series. On one of the episodes they decide to go on a trip to deal with Alejo's anger issues, and the song that was playing before the car broke down was "Time" by Pink Floyd.

Discovered Black Sabbath when my Mum bought me a stereo for my birthday. When I opened up the disc player there was this blank CD (just black with weird symbols on it) in there my Mum didn't know about. Decided to listen to it to see what was on it. I was surprised it was all heavy metal songs I really liked, all from different bands. My Dad over heard me playing it the next day and told they were all covers of Black Sabbath, then he played me the originals, preferred the originals. Went through Black Sabbaths albums the next day and fell in love with their first 5 albums.

That blank CD is Nativity In Black if anyone's interested.
