It's popularity is more than justified - it's a magic game. And by that I mean it's brilliant. There are many popular games that don't deserve the acolades but FF7 does not fall into this category.
Some flaws ofcourse, but an amazing memorable experience the first few runs through and the gameplay still remains enjoyable (somewhat redundant though) to replay to date.
It was the game that put JRPG on my radar to begin with - it captured my attention in what was a genre I hadn't really noticed before. And that says something. It wasn't one particular element that grabbed me but their combination on a whole.
