Ive been contemplating how to approach making this post. I wont go into alot of the details on what happened because this isnt a post trying to get attention for what happened. I dont want this to be a post on the incident, more to the effect of the final question, What RL skills has gaming taught you?

At 10:30 am on friday morning Someone who I was at odds with entered my home with a pillow and a .38 caliber revolver and entered my room while i was asleep, and released 4 shots, One of which grazed my knee, another produced a non critical fleshwound on my forearm and two misses.

Now The reason I wrote this post is that I am somewhat surprised on how this went down. Im not a fan of shooters, but I have played several. My first natural instinct was to find cover. Secondly I held a blanket in front of me to obscure my body and reduce the chance of a critical hit, which worked.

I honestly think my years of gaming are what kept me from panic and gave me the instant reactionary problem solving skills for me to pinpoint what would be the closest form of cover as well as how to minimize the damage to get there.

So for discussion value, What skills has your gaming exp taught you?

Cool story Bro.

EDIT: It kind of really helped me playing Paintball, you get better reflexes, more like reaction time.

Holy shit thats intense. Seriously, wow.

I don't really know what to say now except, well good on you.

I guess gaming taught me to always analyze the environment to find the best solution.

I just quick save before I go to sleep at night.
Also, I fought off a squadron of fire-breathing attack bears armed while I was armed with nothing but a q-tip.
The carnage was immense...

... what? You don't believe me?

how to read a map and a compass

you know "dungeon lords?" of course you don't it was a crappy glitchy crapfest of an rpg, but it did have a very large (or so it seemed to me at the time) open world, with no in game map, but it had an ingame compass and the game came with a paper map, so between the two of them i was able to find everything in the game, and can now read a map and compass better than I could when I was in the boy scouts.

so many commas,

Pics or it didn't happen.

I've actually become a bit more graceful after playing Street Fighter... http://cityrag.blogs.com/photos/uncategorized/face_plant_dave.jpg

Damn. That's pretty awesome.

The only time I can think of was when someone tried to break into my house. I took cover next to the door and when he busted the it in with his foot, I stabbed him in the leg. He never noticed me and he limped off.

And mum says no good comes from gaming.

I learned how to kill with a single knife would to the arm...yeah, and it's taught me the basics of gun fights, swords, communication and how to look at things in a tactical way of thinking.

He missed when you were asleep? And is that person in jail now? And did he just leave after he shot at you four times? I must know more of this...

Games have instilled in me the urge to be thorough in everything I do. You know, exploring all the corners, nooks and crannies of the map taught me that (most of the time) diligence is rewarded in some way.

Oh yeah, and good for you. If you didn't fully appreciate life before, you probably do now.

You stabbed him in the leg? Thats pritty hardcore :S No theives wanna mess with your shit!

OT: Well I'm not sure if this counts but once while playing football (soccer), while in net I kept trying to puch the ball out from corners. I wasn't getting them very far, but when I tried shouting "Falcon PUNCH!!!", it went a lot further!

This topic has only been done about a million times!

Anyway, pretty much all my driving experience comes from playing Gran Turismo since the age of 7. And now I can play on the super-hardest difficulty in most racing games and actually be competitive rather than taking up space on the track!

I find this hard to believe, but I would be willing to believe it (sort of, well, probably not) if you had a plausible reason for not being dead, I mean, what happened? Did he say "Shit, I'm impressed that you found cover and put a blanket over yourself, so impressed, I'm going to give up on killing you and walk away"

Also, it seems a little weird that he missed when you were asleep.

He probobly didn't want to kill anyone, but fired four bullets anyway because he was drunk. I dunno.

This thread reminds of that story of how a kid outsmarted a yak by using skills he learned from WoW (taunting and feigning death).

Wow... What the heck did you do that guy that made him/her go off the end?!

Anyways, glad you survived that attack. Games haven't helped me in any way yet, but I bet they will.

Again, you lucky, and congrats for living.
