The series is being rebooted, how can you have the son of the main character as the protagonist in a reboot? That....doesn't seem very likely.

People just don't like the main character because he looks TOO different. You can't even tell that they're the same person. It'd be like if Paramount Pictures went with the Black Actor to play Peter Parker in the Spider Man reboot.

Personally, I don't like this new Dante because he looks like an fucking twig and I'm suppose to expect this guy to fight monsters? He looks like one of those guys who hangs around behind the school smoking pot.
Again.. I'm waiting for a source that specifies this is a reboot...

Well I give a rats ass... If you dont, then dont post. I'm sure there a fictions you enjoy and that you would be frustrated with if someone just decided to overhaul the entire lore/history
You can post if you disagree, you know mate...s'not really how threads work.

*Sigh* What is the fucking point of arguing with you? If people were assuming that it was a reboot, but it wasn't Ninja Theory or Capcom would come out and say "No no, it's a sequel." or "No, it's not Dante" or all of that crap. They wouldn't leave the world guessing like that. There is nothing worse then being left in the dark.

If people already assume it's a reboot and are correct, then there isn't really any reason to give an announcement. Look at Valve's E3 announcement, people were assuming that it was an Episode 3 thing, they were wrong and Valve told them flat out.

On an off-topic note, Wikipedia has even listed DmC as a Reboot. They don't add things or allow things to be edited without a trustworthy refrence, so I would assume it's safe to say that, "Yes, it is a Reboot." Please, enough with the denial. You have nothing to back up your theory and the only you're doing now is completely ignoring anything we say.

Ok, I'm just taking this from Ninja Theory's own website but here it goes:

"The next instalment of the multi-million selling Devil May Cry? franchise, DmC sees Capcom collaborating with UK based Ninja Theory to explore new frontiers for the series. DmC is in development for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and PlayStation®3.

From its debut on PlayStation 2 in 2001, the Devil May Cry series has been synonymous with stylish action, rewarding combat and a brash, smart-talking protagonist. This ?Devil May Cry DNA? remains but is now injected with a dark and brutal gameplay that promises to redefine the franchise. Set against a contemporary backdrop, DmC will depict a duplicitous world where nothing is ever as it seems and the line between good and evil is constantly blurred. Spurred into action by the promises of a trusted relation, Dante bursts into this world intent on revenge at any cost. DmCwill retain the series? signature mix of sword and gunplay but add additional weapons, all new powers and a revitalised gameplay system as players encounter the game?s devilish mix of enemies and navigate the rich, interactive environment. A true collaboration, DmCsees the team at Ninja Theory joined by key staff from Capcom?s R&D division. Creative direction for the title will be undertaken by Ninja Theory?s Tameem Antoniades and overseen by Hedeaki Itsuno, who has worked on all previous titles in the series. DmC is being co-produced by Capcom?s Japanese and North American development operations."

Nowhere does it say they are rebooting the franchise, but again, most of it is just filler text, so take of that what you will. So far though, I'm counting it as a pre-prequel

Why would they name him Dante then? They've made a new game developed by a new company with a new art aesthetic, but with the name "Devil May Cry" (not the lack of a number at the end denoting a sequel) and with a main character who happens to have the same name as the main character as the past series entries but looks radically different then that main character. These are all the qualities of a reboot, so we are probably right in assuming that it's a reboot.
Why do you automatically think its a reboot? Maybe thats what Capcom want you to think so they can mindfuck you. Is it so hard to get to grips with the concept that two different people can have the same name? The whole underlying story behind DMC is the Sparda bloodline, or simply the idea of one big family. Why can't this new guy be a member of this family who is named after Dante?

Dante shows traits of his father Sparda when he unleashes his powers even going as far as to take his form. In the trailer this Dante shows a flash of the old Dante... could this not be a hint of his family lineage showing through in his demonic powers?
People are assuming this is a reboot because there is virtually nothing in the trailer that relates to DMC apart from a guy who calls himself Dante who fights with two guns. There isn't any of the Gothic architecture, the whole fantasy-ish tone is gone replaced with this gritty, present-day tone, the gunplay itself looks a little forced (though I'm willing to put this down to bad animation), Dante's voice is completely different, even the monster designs are different.

Oh, and probably because every gaming website and a half is calling it a reboot.
Everyone assumes its one thing... therefore theyre correct? Nice generalisation.
Firstly, no need to direct your hostility towards me. I'm simply explaining what you don't understand.

Also, you sort of ignored my first (main) point completely.

I also don't understand the logic of your post. Explain please?

No I'm ignoring what YOU say. The point of this thread was to be about alternate theories, not jumping on the bandwagon. Why shouldnt I question what evryone thinks? Why shouldnt I question an ambiguos trailer? Why should a dev spoon feed you all the information about a game straight away? You cite examples where devs do but I could cite examples where they dont. Look at Dragon Age 2, there are loads of ideas aboiut who the main character is in realation to the wider world and Bioware are keeping their cards close to their chest on his whole identity. And ffs the trailors only been around a short time, if it is Capcoms intention to create speculation theyre not going to dispell it after a fucking week are they?

I'm not going to say anything about the quality of the character (frankly, I didn't care about the original Dante at all, so...) or the game.

That said, I will say that the OP is wrong, and this is the same Dante redesigned/rebooted or what have you. I'm completely 100% sure on this. Willing to bet $1000 sure.

Going from the trailer alone and combining that with OP thinking, we could also say, "It only says DMC at the end! It probably doesn't even mean Devil May Cry. It's probably Don't Make Cake, the reboot of Portal." But it's not. It's Devil May Cry, and it's Dante.

Maybe because he looks like Adam Lambert with short hair and no make-up.
No, it's because of this:

The project lead inserted himself into the game.
Havnt seen that... but lol fair fucking play to him. I would

They will if they will lose money over it. There are a lot of people who are on the fence about the game just based on the idea of this being the new Dante. In the video game industry, a lot of the sales pass on by word of mouth. I say game A is really good, but game B is really bad. Which will you buy?

The developers aim is to get as many sales on Opening day as possible. Anything afterward will be by word of mouth. If you make a bad triple A game and you only sell a few thousand copies, do you think those who disliked your game will turn to their friends and recommend it? Especially if they're big DMC fans.

What you're doing isn't questioning what everyone else is thinking. It's denial. We have evidence to back our arguments up, granted it isn't much, but it is more then you have to support yours. But when Kotaku and Game Informer and even the Escapist itself says "It's probably a Reboot." then you don't think Capcom may be worried that people may have the wrong idea of the plot or of the direction of the game? There is not releasing a lot of info at once and leaving room for speculation by the fanbase and then there is leaving people with false information.

The latter wouldn't be supported to well and face it, this looks NOTHING like Devil May Cry. If they were to make a sequel to anything, they wouldn't be changing the art design of it, the main character or any major stuff like that.

You don't call ODST a sequel to Halo 3 do you?

We can play the put up or shut up game if you want.

I have $1000 that says it's the original Dante. If he turns out not to be, we'll work out a payment method via PM's (Paypal, mailed check, whatever). To take this bet, all you have to do is promise to pay me $100 when he does turn out to be the same Dante. That's right. I'm giving you ten to one odds. Want in?
