Sigh am tired of arguing no one listens thread after thread no matter whats said so i just want to say this. Dante is a deep character hes not a one line spweing character. really look at the character play the games watch the cutscenes. even in 4 hes actually a caring person to in a sence but he dosent feel the need to parade about it. The guys deep thats all i want to defend. Say this games great if you want just doont say dantes shallow.

that is all.

Irony: Redesigning your game to appeal to Western audiences only to have said Western audiences violently reject it.

Because from what I've heard, Devil May Cry 4 was pretty average and sold pretty average-ly
DMC 4 sold over 2 million copies.

Dante's redesign is only a small part of the problems with DMC. To be fair, him extinguishing his cigarette on the face of one of what I guess are DMC's scarecrows was pretty funny. It's too bad that he looks like some punk meth head, and that Union Jack on his sleeve? Hur hur, Anarchy in the UK, amirite? Oh man, Ninja Theory, you're soooo clever!

Jump canceling, just frame moves, knowing what moves will transition into each other smoothly, it's all there and it's part of what made DMC 3 such an amazing game. It had 2d fighter mechanics seamlessly welded onto a 3d game. DMC 4 had a lot of this also, but Dante had issues due to Capcom getting dumb and fiddling with things like Gunslinger (making it almost useless save for some Pandora abuse).

In DMC's trailer you really don't get the feeling that Ninja Theory has any sort of clue WHY Devil May Cry is so much fun. The fighting looks slow. God of War sort of slow. Heavenly Sword sort of slow. Dante doesn't look like a fast, combo crazy character. He comes off as a ponderous, boring to play jackass. I've played Heavenly Sword, and the combat in it is baaaaaaaaaaaad. The flow of the game is fucking terrible and with that as their action game background, I'm really worried about DMC. I'm worried it's going to be incredibly non-technical with tons of canned moves that offer nothing interesting mechanically (like basically every 3d action brawler out there save for DMC/Bayonetta).

I am going to ignore all of that and just direct you to this;

this is just going to go around and around, so let's just end this conversation for now until some definitive gameplay footage comes out and more information is given.
I don't care what anyone says, a trailer is a trailer is a trailer, you know absolutely nothing about the game aside from a teaser trailer. That is not enough basis to scream "RHUINED!" for a reboot. You are pulling conclusions out of the god-damn ether, there's no gameplay footage to support your claim of "the fighting looks slow".

I'm not going to keep arguing here as it's just going to go 'round in circles. Wait for the game to get in your hands, or at least for some official gameplay footage. Then you can start going nuts.

EDIT: And again, let's try to give Ninja theory the benefit of the doubt, hm? Their only game was a launch title for the PS3, which wasn't as horrible as people claim, and their new game, Enslaved, looks pretty interesting. Just wait.

EDIT 2: And if not selling averagely, then certainly forgettable. I forgot the game, even the whole franchise, existed until recently.

Let me make a few notes here before I begin,
1.This is a different continuity than the original DMC series
2.This is by a different development team than the original DMC games

These two factors together make me leery of this game, it may end up like Metroid: Other M, good gameplay & graphics but absolutely crappy story and plot.

The fighting in the gameplay trailer. I've yet to see a trailer for a game that you couldn't deduce what the hell the game was all about just by watching and paying attention (a skill that most of you seem to be completely devoid of).

If you weren't that into games like DMC, sure, I bet you'd have a lot of fun with Heavenly Sword. Me? I know better and was pretty bored with how shallow the combat in the game was. To be fair, God of War's combat is pretty asstastic as well.

Every time a game starts to come down the pipeline and people hate what they're seeing, there are always guys like you that are like "nooo nooo, give it a chance!" Unfortunately, your crowd is almost universally wrong.

I've heard the Enslaved demo is out soon, so I'll give it a shot.
EDIT: The gameplay trailers look pretty fucking boring though.

Well I for one like this new Dante. It looks like he might develop beyond a JRPG cliché, at least I'm hoping. I'm not saying Dante wasn't a fun guy, he just got boring. It sucks that they also gave Leon Kennedy the same treatment in Resident Evil 4.

It's the first Devil May Cry I've been interested in since 3.

Trailers say a lot, but they also say nothing at the same time. I don't care if there's a huge sign in the trailer that says "This is how the gameplay is going to be!", you cannot base what the gameplay will be without gameplay.

I wouldn't say that I had fun with the game, but from what I played it was adequate. But again, it was a launch title on the PS3, and in all honesty it was most likely an elaborate tech-demo for facial reading technology.

Every time a game starts to come down the pipeline and people hate what they're seeing, there are always guys like you that are like "nooo nooo, give it a chance!" Unfortunately, your crowd is almost universally wrong.
Give peace a chaaaance.

And every time a series changed even the slightest thing in a game, fans declare it the "worst thing evar" and that the series is now ruined FOREVER [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RuinedFOREVER].

I'm not saying "no no no, give it a chance! It may not be bad, it could be the shot that revives the franchise!", I'm saying "Guys, chill the hell out and just wait. It's just a trailer."

I'd think to think there's a difference, but apparently there isn't, because fans are universally right and never overreact just to protect their beloved franchise from outsiders infecting it.

But no, apparently I'm "wrong" because I choose to wait for some definitive gameplay footage before flying off the handle and claiming that the franchise is ruined. How silly of me.

his name was dante,
he has white hair sprouting from the top of his head (look next to the sea of black),
he wears red and black.

it seems pretty obvious this guy is dante, oh and the original maker of DMC actually said he was.
can't find the link but he said he was sad this is what became of dante.

This does very much appear to be a complete reboot. Quote from the DMC wiki:

As initial fan reaction to the teaser has been quite negative, Capcom issued a statement clarifing that this game takes place in a different universe, as it is being developed by a different developer from previous titles of the franchise, and will not affect any story elements already established by the classic series.
