I was a hipster before being a hipster was hip.

My mom was a "hipster" back in the 90's, and i think it ended up rubbing off of me. While i dont "officially" think im a hipster, its kinda the truth. I pick up trends before most people, and then i complain about it when everyone else copys it.

You know that hoodie phase that started back in like? All me baby. I went to school in one ((with a really nice scarf by the way)) and i wore on every day. Two weeks later, BAM! Every kid in the school ((of nearly 1200 mind you)) had a pair of hoodies crammed in theyre locker. ((A zip up, and a pull over))
Of course, i bring it up, and most people are like, "no way! You didnt start it! D:<"
And im all, "No. I didnt. But baby, 8) i was there when it happened." <--- Hipster Voice.

While im a bit of a hipster, im not one of the snooty ones though, who act like everything was better before people learned about it. Sure, somethings are, but society needs trends to help it move forward.

I don't really care for the "official" definition of what a hipster is.

To me, anyone who pays a lot of money to look like they don't have any or belong to some subculture they don't know the first thing about is a "hipster". So for me, there are hipster nerds, hipster gothics, hipster punks and so forth, but the plain "hipster" is someone who wears ripped jeans, looks like he hasn't had a shower in a long time, whose clothes don't match in any way known to humankind and payed more money for that than I did on my entire wardrobe.

My former flatmate was a hipster and god, was she a nuisance. She would own records (never listen to them, just have them lying around) and adorne herself with videogame symbols although the only two games she ever played were plants vs. zombies and Portal. Because they were "the shit".

I am a republican but I'll tell you whenever I saw those people dressed like that and espoused neo-conservative philosophy it just made me roll my eyes because none of them actually did have any college friends that were part of the ROTC or Marines.
That seems to be a running theme with hipsters: "Pick an unpopular minority and assign yourself to it unwaveringly, despite having no idea of what it means."

I don't care for the true definition of hipsters, I'd prefer to label anyone who purposely likes unpopular things to be hipster so that people who are genuinely different aren't stuck with a negative label.

Really? I live like 20 mins from Portland and have never even heard of it being extremely hipster...or do you mean that fake Portland on the west coast? And main steam is actually rather easy to define, I will give you some examples, Anythign made be EA or Activision, Anything you can find on best-selling book lists, blockbuster movies, mainstream=popular and popular sells, alot, so therefore mainstream sells, alot. Hipsters dislike mainsteam because it is mainstream, not because they actually dislike it all, and they live obscure/indie because it is obscure/indie, and they pride themselves as being better then everyone who does like mainstream things
Di... did you just call my Portland fake?

Other than that, you have it pretty spot on.
Would Copy be better? How about Your portland is my Portlands Ganger?

If you don't cease these slights upon my city, we shall have to meet on the Field of Honor,[footnote]Its kind of like The Field of Dreams, except we shoot each other for honor instead of playing baseball[/footnote], Pistols, at noon (Pacific time, because that's the time zone of the best Portland). I feel I must warn you, I'm a crack duelist, and my pistols haven't tasted the blood of an East Coast... person, as of late. :D

Unfortunately, when people say Portland they think of my Portland, so there, HA!

During my previous study, Artificial Intelligence, there were several people who could be roughly identified as such.

Besides the, imho, silly dress code I found them slightly pretentious.

Putting a lot of effort into making an intellectual and liberal impression but never actually seeming to have any discussions worth of note about serious topics. Mostly talking about where to hang out, which music was hip etc.

I don't really care much about them either way. I generally leave them alone and they generally leave me alone, it's worked so far.

No, you most certainly do not get to meet James Earl Jones, he will be serving coffee on the Field of Refreshments, but you're not invited.

And the unfortunately, was in the context of unfortunately for you.

Just because some people like certain things, society labels them a hipster.
Its like how I'm a fat greasy nerd for simply playing video games.
I have a good example of this. English class and we all had laptops, and it was unspokenly a day to goof off, so several of us were playing the flash port of Doom on the laptops. A couple of guys behind me were having trouble finding the way you had to go in the first level. I got up, having just completed the level to help. This is how the exchange went:

"Well look, you just go over here, turn and there it is."

"Oh, okay. Kind of sad that you know that."

"Really? How so?

"Well it just is" (several others pitching in "yeah, that's really sad" or "kind of pathetic" etc.

"But... it's the first level. Which I just did!"

"Yeah, but it's still sad you remember how to do it."

I'm not even exaggerating.

OK well then I will meet you one the Field of Honor, meet me there at high noon and wait. Under no circumstances are you allowed to investigate the sound of an army invading the Field of Refreshments, it is just your imagination and you should treat it as such

I don't know any true hipsters personally, although I see many people dressed in the current hipster "uniform" in town, that is to say dressed like they where catapulted through a topman store. Still I like talking to hipsters though as like any other non-conformist subgroup like goths/emos what have you, they are remarkably easy to wind up, which gives me great pleasure.

My only real problem with hipsters is when they never give recommendations of any good indie bands that do turn up, and then moan about the mainstream music. Dammit tell us about the good music instead keeping for yourselves.

The reason I've seen people hate on hipsters (of which I am one), is not on hipsters as a whole. It's because some (NOT all) hipsters think that they're superior to others, when they're really not. We're just different.
No, people don't dislike you because you think you are better, they dislike you because you think you are special.

The fact that you think you are different than the general population is the exact reason why people don't like you. You are not different, you are a jackass like the rest of the world.
Well, hipsters are different to the general population. If they weren't, they wouldn't be hipsters, they'd be people. And being different and special are basically the same thing.

No, you are not different or special. Having a certain music/fashion taste doesn't make you significantly different from other people.

You are not an unique little flower, you are just like everyone else. The fact that you adhere to specific label proves it.

I didn't know what a hipster was until I visited my friend at his college, and they were EVERYWHERE!

I normally don't mind them and I ignore them until they say something truly stupid, then I wish them death.

Really? Don't see any of these things walking around? Usually self proclaimed visionaries or alternate. I see them everywhere, usually around universities and colleges.
Those aren't hipsters, those are everyday modern style people.
