This has been bugging me for quite some time. All of us know full well of how much the general populace is starting to hate hipsters, but what I find strange is that I've never actually met or heard of a single hipster amongst the myriads of people I encounter on a daily basis... I'm starting to doubt if they even exist. That probably sounds stupid, but from my point of view I'm not seeing any.

So.... yeah. Can anyone shine some light on me here? :s

As somone too old to be bothered keeping up with the lables the kids give themselves or each other, I have two groups, those that I like and those that piss me off.

I assume most people are the same, thus the hipster I assume is the outgroup of your ingroup.

I guess it makes my outgroup "those damn kids on my lawn" little bastards!

Edit: I assume the reason you don't really see them, is because the view of an outgroup isn't often one based in reality. You see no stereotypical hipster because there aren't really any. Likewise the kids on my lawn I shout at don't respond because there are no kids on my lawn, I dont even have a lawn. Still... damn kids.

One of the people who used to... not quite 'bully' me, but he was an ass; in middle school, I've been seeing walking around with thick-rimmed glasses, an afghan scarf and a... mohawk, I think it was.

I'm not really interacting with him, but he strikes me as a hipster.

Yeah well in England we don't really call em 'Hipsters' just Indie Kids. They aren't really douche bags (im probably one of em) they're just mostly people who like indie music and wear shit from topman.

On another note I persoanlly despise the word 'hipster' its so ugly and american. bleurgh.

The reason I've seen people hate on hipsters (of which I am one), is not on hipsters as a whole. It's because some (NOT all) hipsters think that they're superior to others, when they're really not. We're just different.

edit: my friend points out that what makes me a hipster is not the hat but the fact that whenever people talk about TV show from the US i point out that i could ruin about 1-3 seasons of plot for them since that's how long it takes for stuff to get to Germany and i watch everything in English anyway.

The 'Hipster' archetype that people rage about on the internet is an absurd straw caricature of several subcultures. No one like that actually exists. It's existence of the internet is primarily so people can try to justify their belief that if they haven't heard of something it must be crap. "Listen to , they're kinda cool." Yeah, I live in the UK and do know several "Indies", which is probably the closest culture here to Hipsters. They're alright. Can't stand their scarves.

Well, a textbook hipster is rather difficult to find, but they can be found. Portland, OR and Williamsburg, VA are the best-known hipster havens, although there are isolated packs of them in almost every major city. For example, Atlanta hipsters can generally be found in Little 5 Points or at screenings of The Room at the Plaza Theater. And, furthermore, I'd argue that most people at least partially qualify as hipsters, for one reason or another. To use myself as evidence, I'm a devotee of underground and cult media, and I'm prone to writing about pop culture with more scrutiny and/or critical thought than is generally necessary.
