I'm actually glad this is news for you. Home invasions are our daily bread in Argentina. The people inside are usually killed and the culprits never found/imprisoned. My old man alone got invaded three times in a single week :/ A truly fucking violent society, and noone to do anything about it.
At least Argentine politicians don't blame videogames for the violence. Oh wait, they do: http://www.clarin.com/policiales/Berni-sociedad-violenta-TV-videojuegos_0_864513709.html
I guess people can be stupid wherever you go. I know this isn't really relevant to the discussion but it does get me worked up!

I didn't watch the video because that would only make me sick. I'm just glad the guy was caught eventually.

I'm also quite happy right now that I have 2 crossbows, a carbon-steel Katana and a hatchet, all of which are legal under Dutch law. I'm not planning to hurt anyone though, just scare them off if necessary.

Questions to be answered.

How did he get in?
Was her door locked?
Did she have a security door?
How much time did she have to react before she was aware he was inside?

I know it's possible to kick open a locked and dead-bolted door but it would certainly take a few tries for the average man to get through.

If she had a security/screen door, the only way the guy could get through is if he broke a window.

I have to join the "Don't lay down and let the criminal get away with it" crowd. I have also had the misfortune of having my been through an attempted home invasion. I actually had an entire gang of at least 20 people try to attack me in my home. I lived in an upstairs half of a fourplex(a house divided into 4 apartments) building and they even had the tweeker downstairs neighbors helping them by hiding some of them in their apartment when the cops showed up. Sadly i was on probation for a weapons charge which meant that i wasn't allowed to have any weapons. I also had no phone at the time and it was in the mid 90's before we all had cells. I had some friends over at the time so thankfully i wasn't home alone. One of them left and the gangbangers didn't relent until another friend brought over his mini-14.

Sadly they simply came back later to finish the job. I had the presence of mind to move all of my belongings out as i saw it coming. I was at a concert when it happened. When i came home, my tv and vcr where in the front yard busted up, and i had no front door. Rather than simply busting down the door they had actually removed the sections of wall around the door frame, which was laying in the living room. The entire apartment was graffitied up on the inside. I later learned that one of my roommates was in the shower when it happened and they brutalized him. No one was ever arrested for it.

My position on the self defense angle is simple. To not bring force against your attackers is not only naive, but selfish. Do you honestly believe you will be the only person that person violates? I now keep swords all over my home, i have over a decade of experience using them so even if someone breaks into my house and grabs one, they better hope they get lucky with it because they aren't likely to be more skilled with them. Even if i went to jail for killing a home invader i could at least take pride that there is one less person out there victimizing other people and i may have saved a potential future victims life.

I would also second that keeping a dog or 2 is a damn good idea. Even a little dog is a great alarm to give you a moments heads up. Sadly where i live it seems that affordable housing rarely allows you to have a dog. I would love to have a dog, but sadly it isn't an option since i'm not wealthy.

On a side note: Why the hell would anyone suggest an attempted rape charge? That is just stupid.

Reads like just another idiotic hand wave about violent videogames. Figures they would say that :p
The last controversy regarding games I heard in Argentina was about that Counter Strike custom map set in Malvinas. Except people were cool with it, while the rest of the world cried outrage, kinda.

Well I live in Britain, so if someone invaded my home, even if I had a weapon near me (knife, bat, club) I wouldn't be able to do anything. I'd pretty much have to let them in, make them a cup of tea and watch happily as they steal my most valued possessions, because anything else is assault and "unnecessary".
Learn what reasonable force means then, as long as you don't purposely kill or torture anyone you are fine.
EDIT: Sorry, I misread. The thing is, even if you knock an intruder out (somehow) they could most likely take you to court for assault, it's just the way things work here. The line is so blurred, because when someone's in your house trying to steal things and threatening either you or your family it's very hard to make clear judgements.
It's not blurred in the eye's of the law though, what is blurred is the public perception of the reasonable force rule. As i said said as long as you don't purposely kill or torture anyone your fine, when you think about it, it's hard to come up with a case where anyone got in trouble for defending their homes and businesses.
