So how bad are Mass Effect 1's driving segments?

I'm thinking about giving Mass Effect a try and the only thing that worries me is all of those horror stories about how bad the driving is. Is it something that you do a lot of during the game?

If you cut out a lot of the side exploration you don't have too many, and those that you do get tend to be boring more than anything else. But it does handle like a drunk six-legged hippopotamus.

I dunno, personally I didn't find it all that bad. The Mako (The tank you drive around) is pretty unwieldy, but you can get used to it.

...There's only a few driving sections that are outright required, though if you do much planetary exploration you'll find yourself using it more. Most of that is optional however. Mass Effect is a great game. don't worry about the driving, just buy it.

Which system? PC controls were considerably easier to handle than 360 controls. It is more of an issue of being not fun than driving a brick. Especially the drive on Noveria, way too long and crappy.

It can be awkward but if you use the jump jets right its usually pretty painless.

Also what dude below me said.

The physics were fucking ridiculous.

You can drive up and almost completely vertical incline, and then struggle to get over a little hump.

The vehicle is tricky to handle, but I enjoyed the driving sections, most of the time.

There are only a couple mandatory driving sections. You can do as many or as few of the open world ones as you want. Don't let it turn you off Mass Effect.

Played it on PC.

Thought the controls were fine and they were really fun levels. I don't see why people find it so boring.

I only really did it during the main story and one side planet though, since I'm not into doing every single side mission in a game.

It's not THAT bad, but it can become monotonous and tedious after a while. This is especially true if you do sidequests.

Honestly, the thing that annoyed me most about the Mako wasn't the driving but when it got hit. If things were really bad, you had to repair it in the middle of enemy fire.

You get pretty used to it.And not all that much of the game is driving, very little is infact. It's worth it.

I didnt mind them.
In fact, i kinda missed them when you compare it to the way you get resources in ME2.

yes the driving sections are bad, the tank is awkward to control and its very picky about what it can and can't go up. it is bad but it wasn't a deal breaker on the game for me.

It could have been done much better but it was not a game-ruining experience if that's what you are afraid of. As others already said very little of it is mandatory so if you like the rest of the game you won't regret buying it.

It's not that bad. Not nearly as good as the rest of the game, but I didn't find it overly frustrating.

if your not going to do it much, and your just going to trudge through the main plot the driving isnt that bad since the pathways are fairly linear and there aren't that many 'oh shit i hit a bump, time to go flying 50 feet into the air' moments. but if your going for a completionist run (and why wouldn't you be?) then your in for a lot of time driving around everyone's favorite brick covered in flubber

Bah. The worst part about using the Mako was that if you blasted fish in a barrel with its guns instead of getting out and doing it with personal weapons you get less XP. Otherwise...yeah, it's kind of clumsy, and at times it's a little...odd which areas it will drive over and which it won't, but most of the time, it's fine.
