So alot, ALOT, of people hate twilight: partly because of how vampires are pathetic in it.

But, even PROPER vampires have Loads of variations. So lets get specific on how you would prefer them to be portrayed.

Sunlight Hurts

This is fcking essential to vampires. though, the why I'd do it most vamps could bypass this by wearing armor and not letting the sun hit his head in the right angle. SOlar powered flashlights count as sunlight. not realistic I know...

"turn to stone" would be stupid, But I wouldn't mind it either

Vampires! Bats in Disquise!
I Always miss this when it doesn't show up. Seriously, why not? it adds to the threat of vampires by not binding them to the ground.

Where The Hell is Dracula?
Dracula sounds awesome to say, first off. secodoff, A crapton of stuff has a "Dracula type "vampire, who wheres a cape and leads the vampires, but no dracula himself. Buh-wha? it even worse when they don't acknowledge there, at one time in the storyline, BEING a dracula. so they just replaced him with count lamename? EVEN WHEN THEY HAVE THE SAME CHARACTER TRAITS!? no, use dracula, not "Auguste" or "Vulturi".

Part 2!

THEY'RE FAST AS SHIT! OH SHIT!
this, like the bat transformations thing, adds to awesomeness of the vampire.

One bite
PRovided they're still alive when bitten, one bite turns someone into a vampire.

Garlic...

Could go both ways: I would think "AWESOME" if, in a movie, some dude covers himself in garlic. then, a vampire rips off said garlic and eats it, going ""you know? I think garlic tastes great. vampires don't like it... Pffft. Oh, and your yummy too. Nom Nom."

Proper vampires for me are pretty much zombies or revenants; they eat human flesh, are decomposing, and you kill them by hammering a brick in their mouth, burning their corpse, and scattering the ashes over holy ground.

I like them as described in Anne Rice's books. I dunno, they just seem to fit.

Ok. Here goes.

Sunlight=Death. (Though I prefer a slow burn over the sudden bursting into flames)

Fangs are a must.

Human blood is yummy.

Lack of Angsty "I'm such a monster" type stuff. (I get that it's part of the internal conflict. But honestly, there's so much of it that I'm getting sick of it)

NO SPARKLING!

Superhuman traits. (Things like strength, speed, etc. Basically, things that give them an advantage over their human prey. But not by a ridiculous amount.)

May add more later.

I kind of like the vampires in the Soul Reaver games. A civilised race of humans/beasts with fangs, pale skin, claws and wings. But sunlight only hurts them when they are young and it's effects lessen when you age. Also they can live for hundreds or thousands of years.

Read "The Last Vampire". That'll give you a pretty good idea of the type I like. I will summarize what I remember though.

Sunlight hurts, but doesn't kill: It basically will weaken you, but unless you haven't eaten in a long time, it will not kill you
Blood is necessary to survive, but is not required all that often: You can go months without blood, and you can live off of animal blood if need be.
You are fast and strong: You are lightning quick and stronger than a normal person.

Theatricality! For the love of god, vampires are at their coolest when they're theatrical, the things that go bump in the night. They're the monster versions of Hannibal Lecter. I mean, if a vampire were to act like Sylar in season 1 of Heroes, they'd be amazing. Those fuckers are theatrical. They appear out of nowhere, they're classy, they're seductive, they'll offer wine before sucking your blood, and that's what makes them scary, and that's what makes them awesome. They're the poetic, egotistic, monster and it's amazing.

I agree on the second two, but I personally prefer my vampires to die from sunlight. Not instantly, but burning over time. I want to feel safe at least during the day.

Salem's Lot vampires have always been some of my favorites. Mostly because as far as I can remember they weren't used as a metaphor for sex; they were just rilly fuckin scary.

The rapist kind. That's what they're based on; sex hungry monsters.

But er, blood-drinking, strong, quick, detests sunlight. Not fond of the "turn into bat". I don't think it's cool.

All I need a vampire to have is:

Bloodsucking/drinking to live (in that they cannot abstain, they must drink blood)

Empowered at night (I'm okay with vampires who are powerful enough to move in sunlight, as long as they don't have all their other powers in the daytime), like Alucard from Hellsing

Overtones of sexuality (for me this is essential. A vapmire attack should feel like a rape, a consensual drinking should feel like sex)

I'm going to expand on that last one. When Bram Stoker (and to a lesser extent an unknown author who wrote Varney the Vampire) codified the notion of vampire's into literary form in the victorian period, it was as a response to the 'foreigners coming over here and stealing our women' mentality. Seriously, that's true. To the British, Dracula is Transylvanian, in a lot of American movies, vampires are British (or just vaguely European) the predominant theme though is that they come here to drink the blood of people of the opposite sex (or same sex if it's a gay vampire) and that they are not from round these parts.

This was even essential to vampires in traditional lore, in that often the vampire hadn't ever been a member of your village. You would never bump into your Uncle Bob and find out that he was a vampire, it would always be a stranger.

Anyway, some others include:

Fear of holy symbols, with an added possibility of burning when confronted or touched by them

Disregard for humans (I'm a little shaky on the whole soulless versus ensouled and capable of love motif. I think a competent writer can make a single ensouled vampire a credible anti-hero or outright hero. An incompetent author makes them erotic spank material)

In a way I blame Joss Whedon for Twilight and Anita Blake and True Blood. If he hadn't had Angel and Spike (who I think were in the whole written superbly by a great team of writers who managed to keep the idea new enough), then none of this would have ever happened. People just seemed to forget that every other vampire on the entire planet was evil, because as long as Angel and Spike were around there was always hope!

Seriously, Joss Whedon, look at what your genius has wrought, I have seen the monster, and it is you!

I think I got a little off topic there.

Vamps need blood to survive.. I think it was Spike from Buffy who described vampires who didn't drink blood as being "like those starving skeleton kids in africa, but not as funny"

Fast is a good one, and hot. It was always part of a vampires arsenal the fact that they were gorgeous up until the moment they tried to kill you.

Great vampire film: Dracula Dead and Lovin' It
