So for those in the US, the ruling about gay marriages being legal nationwide is a significant event, and I'm curious how it's going to impact others. Mostly in a professional manner, but also in a private angle.

For me, it's going to impact filing claims for veterans, as they will now be able to list their same sex partner as a spouse for benefits purposes. They will be able to provide them with medical coverage, provide them with education benefits, and let them receive widow benefits in the event that they die. Which I'm quite happy for.

Personally, it might mean I get to use my status as an ordained Dudeist Priest to marry some people. xD

So how, if at all, is the ruling going to impact you on a professional/personal level?

Hoping it's going to put pressure on the Australian government to legalise it. Something like 70% of the population supports it. Hell, we have a habit of following the US on bad ideas, why not a good one?

You're a dudeist priest? For real? That's hilarious. In a good way I mean. It's good to see some humor injected into Philosophy.

OT: Yeah, personally it'll probably affect me in absolutely no way whatsoever. Unless I have some friends who end up getting married and I have to go to their weddings... ugh... mingling with old high school people... but yeah probably not.

I am interested in seeing what the legal precidents for the supreme court will be from this though, if anything. For those of you who didn't care to read the dissenting opinion, you should. It's an interesting perspective concerning the interpretation of the 14th amendment and its affect on the 10th.

It won't.

I suppose in a philosophical way it makes me happy that equal rights are (finally) being recognized but I am not gay, I do not know anyone who is gay (or know them well as I have a Facebook friend who is gay), and my job will not be affected in any real way. From a practical standpoint, gay marriage has no affect on my life.

I did get to see who still clings to outdated and stupid beliefs on Facebook so I suppose you could say that affects me indirectly. Weird how the Bible says "gay is bad" but we ignore the "no tattoos" and "no working on Sunday" and various other things The Bible also says is against the rules...

Indeed I am. xD I am atheist Dudeist Priest, as the tenants of Dudeism don't conflict with anything. It's quite easy to become one actually, just go to their website and you can be ordained. You have to buy the documentation you have to submit to be approved in your area to officiate, but yeah, it's pretty easy.

To quote a Crackled Article[footnote]Yeah I know I probably shouldn't be quoting Cracked articles, shame on me[/footnote]

If You Are a Homosexual and Are Already Married:
If you had been lucky enough to live in a state that allowed gay marriage, the federal government already recognized your marriage as a thing, and you were eligible for tax, health, and pension benefits under federal law like any other married couple. Previously, if you had moved to another state that didn't recognize gay marriage, that state didn't have to recognize your marriage. Now, your marriage is recognized everywhere, the same as anyone else's.

If You Are a Homosexual and Want to Get Married:
Where before this came down to whether or not your state had legalized it, now you are free to do so regardless of which state you live in.

If You Are a Heterosexual and Do NOT Want to Enter into a Homosexual Marriage:
You will not be required to marry a gay person. This is a common misunderstanding. This decision actually does not affect you in any way.

If You Are Currently in a Heterosexual Marriage:
This decision does not affect you in any way.

If You Are a Heterosexual Who Is Not Currently Married:
This decision does not affect you in any way.

If You Are a Heterosexual Who Hopes to Eventually Marry:
This decision does not affect you in any way.

If You Are a Member of a Church That Performs Wedding Ceremonies but That Does Not Believe in Gay Marriage:
This decision does not affect you in any way.

If You Are a Religious Official Who Performs Wedding Ceremonies but Who Thinks Gay Marriage Is Wrong:
This decision does not affect you in any way.

If You Are an Individual Who Believes Gay Marriage or Homosexuality in General Is Wrong for Religious Reasons, and Wish to Continue Expressing Those Beliefs:
This decision does not affect you in any way.

If You Are an Individual Who Believes Gay Marriage or Homosexuality in General Is Wrong for Non-Religious Reasons, and Wish to Continue Expressing Those Beliefs:
This decision does not affect you in any way.

If You Are a Heterosexual Who Fears This Decision Adversely Affects Your Marriage or the Concept of Marriage in General:
This decision does not affect you in any way.

If You Are a Heterosexual Who Fears This Decision Negatively Affects You in Some Way:
This decision does not affect you in any way.

If You Are a Heterosexual Who Suffers Anger or Anxiety at the Thought of Gay Couples Getting Married as an Abstract Concept, and Believes the Only Cure Is to Legally Prevent Gay Marriage:
This decision will cause you some degree of anger or anxiety. Otherwise, this decision does not affect you in any way.

Hope this helps!

On a more serious note, the gay marriage ruling doesn't particularly impact me, though I am happy for all my gay (bi, pan, trans who were affected) friends who can now get married in the state of their choosing.

Also the internet got more colorful.

It makes the gay-bashing bigots I know angry, which makes me happy. There are also implications for church-state separation and the end of the Religious Right as an influential political force, so long-term there are benefits that will affect everyone whether they are gay or not.

For instance, if the Religious Right is weakened we're going to start seeing an end to the teaching of creationism and abstinence-based sex ed in the schools. And once the Religious Right is declawed I think we're going to start seeing less polarization in government, which can only be a good thing.

According to Bryan Fischer, of the American Family Association, the Supreme Court has forced America into sodomy.

So I guess there will be a lot more federally mandated butt sex. I am not opposed to this.

I'm not gay, no one I know is gay. Doesn't affect me at all.
Also, I live in Australia. :p

I hope the same thing comes here. We have a habit of following America.

EDIT - Sorry. We have a habit of following America after 5 years of red tape bullshit.

It doesn't affect me at all.

The only way it will affect me is if I have to go to a gay wedding, but I'm sure I won't mind since it will be a wedding for someone I know and am happy for.

I really wish my fellow religious peeps would calm their tits and not act like the world is coming to an end.

I get to marry my girlfriend no matter what state we end up in and what it says on my driver's license. Seems like a win.

Not gay so not exactly much to impact me in any real way. It does make me happy though and I enjoy seeing the bigots gripe over it. Since they lack the power to do anything about it I can sit back and enjoy them acting like morons. Usually irritating, but at the moment, knowing they lost in a major way and are a bit more harmless, I can laugh at them without being annoyed.

Doesn't affect me at all save some of the stupid stuff I have to see on my Facebook wall. Not too difficult to deal with, though.

America jumped willingly and gleefully into sodomy a long time ago.
And it was awesome.

The ruling itself will not affect me, but the precedent set by SCOTUS might. Roberts is 100% right, they exceeded their authority on this ruling, and I am deeply concerned about what impacts that will have in the coming decades.

I'm led to believe it was only 2003 that all states legalised it, actually.
