Okay, so... Just recently a friend of mine got driven over by a truck. Luckily his life was never on the line because the truck "only" drove over his thighs, however, as you can probably imagine, his femurs were pretty much gone after that. Again lucky him there was snow on the road so his femurs weren't completely shattered under the weight but now he's at a hospital and will be there for quite a while since he cannot sit or walk.

Naturally I went to visit him at the hospital as soon as I could (the hospital is pretty far from here so I didn't have a chance to do so right away) but when I saw him there feverish on the bed I had no idea what to say to him. It would've been quite stupid to ask, "How're you going?" when I could already tell he was not doing very well (he had collapsed the day before and had started taking some antidepressants). I basically stood there for a second not knowing what to say and decided just to hug him. I guess actions are better than words sometimes?

Anyway, the point of this topic is to ask what would you, fellow Escapists, say to a friend who has been in an accident or injured themselves? What would you do or say to try to make them feel at least a little bit better?

An oldy but a goldy. That would actually cheer my friends up - we're all rather simple folk.

SERIOUSLY, THOUGH: I wouldn't know what to say - I'm terrible in those kind of situations.

Yep, me too. It was nearly painful to see my friend in such bad shape but luckily his mum was there too (and my parents) so they did most of the talking and I was able to just listen to them and nod every now and then. I was sure if had talked I would've started crying or something. :|

Depends who it is. For some friends I would say "Well on the plus side, for me that is, I'm finally better at rugby than you are."

Terrible situations and me do not get on. I laugh at funerals. It's a curse. I'm what's known to doctors (and everyone else) as a dickhead.

I wouldn't have the slightest idea of what to say to them. I would probably try to crack a joke or something to lighten the mood.

Breaking into song would be strange but effective. Maybe even giving him a laptop or a PSP/DS would do.

My friends generally know me as a funny guy, so I would come prepared with something funny to say, just to break that horrible veneer of awkward depression that clogs up the room in those kinds of situations.

I actually had some experience with this once. A friend of mine lost the ring finger on his right hand in a boating accident, I was there with him when it happened. While we were waiting for help to arrive and everyone was sitting in silent misery, I said "Dude, if chicks dig scars, you are gonna be Hugh Hefner by the end of the week".

Everyone paused.

Then laffed.

This is a long shot but you could start singing... Or get the nurses to do it... Or dress up as a nurse and start singing... Something funny and irrelevant...
like this:
although, that happens as a result of the drugs they put him on... but y'know.. its sorta relevant to the topic

A question, what gender are you? Because hugging someone when you see them injured is something I've only ever seen in a movie done by a chick (sorry, but isn't it true?).
Anyways, I'd probably go and crack a stupidly terrible joke and look like an idiot, which is something you shouldn't do.
Yeah, well all's good and I'm a girl. :D (Oh, and I'm 18 and he's in army so he's 19... or was in army, anyway)
I'm thinking of going to visit him again sometime, maybe I'll buy him a teddy next time to cheer him up. Hmm.

It sure would but I'm not much of a dancer and my singing frightens little children. :p But oh well, anything to cheer my friend up!

Start off with showing him a gift, and going "Taa-daa!" in a low, slightly sad voice. In the gift could be something fun for his boring hospital room. Get some friends together to go visit him, and hit up the nearest dollar store/cheap toy store/Walgreens, and buy a few foam swords (they're cheap, I promise), a few eyepatches, make some newspaper hats. When you all go see him, dash in, waving the foam swords, sporting the eyepatches and hats, and stage a sword fight around him, including him with a sword or two. Water pistols also work. You will get the nurses/docs a tad upset, but you can tell them to chill, you'll be gone after a bit, and that you'll clean up before you leave. If he gets said, overexaggerate it when you can, and say that they're secretly making him the first Classic Zombie, with Shuffling Action! Just be prepared to discuss the heavy stuff when it comes.

If someone said that to me after an accident I'd make them eat their scrotum... Once I was all better of course.
