It can't be that bad. I think I'm that 1% but after two weeks on a free account and 4 days on a paid, I'm pretty much done with the game. I feel like an idiot for getting that battle chest e.e Still, the books it came with are pretty awesome.

Seriously though, a big advice I can give you is this: do not (and I mean it) use sms language... It's more than annoying.

Try not to ask for gold to any random high level wandering near you in capitals or whatever.

In dungeons, do not ninja loot. If your main spec is heal, do not ninja tank stuff (this works for druids and paladins only).

Try to come up with a name that makes sense (ex: no XxArchidruidxX). Although I'm not sure it's even possible to valid this kind of name.

And when you create your character, think before about what role you want to play:
Tank/Melee DPS/Ranged DPS/Magical Ranged DPS/Heal.
Then figure out if you want to tank as a bear or as a tin can/if you want to assume group healing or focused healing, etc.

As of now, World of Warcraft is really easy and fail-proof. It's now probable you'll die only a couple of times before you hit 85 (a few years ago, it was dangerous just walking on the road ^^'). The game really guides you with arrows and big shiny buttons.

Oh, and this is gold, after a few days of timeplay, try to fiddle with addons, you can change your UI looks, enable some useful/useless shit or whatever.

It's been three months since I've logged back in and I don't plan to come back but WoW was a lot of fun, especially if you play mage.

Because the Warcraft series was an RTS before an MMO, WoW has a pretty decent backstory. I actually like WoW's story better than most of the games I play on my console, which is saying something for an MMO. In all honesty, if you're only downloading the free trial (only lets you to level to Lvl-20) you wont get the sense of story you could if you had the full game.
My advice is to try and get as immersed as possible. The World is expensive and unique, don't let other players trolling you ruin that.

I have literally heard nothing, or seen anything about this game prior to now. I am only installing the free version, but are there any World of Warcraft veterans out there who could give me some starting tips? Maybe some guidance to creating a character, what to do etc.

EDIT: Just for clarification, I have heard of World of Warcraft before, just never seen any footage of it, or information about what to do in-game (I have never been interested in the slightest before tonight).

If you're anything like me you'll find it interesting for a while but ultimately get tired of the grind... Wow only really shines if you have friends to play it with or you're sociable enough to make friends in game (im not).
