Some of the netbooks out there are phenomenal. Ever since they first hit the market, they've only been getting better and better. If I didn't have a gaming laptop, I would probably have a decent desktop and a good netbook.

I would love to snag this one, and it costs about as much as the ipad, and has more functionality, unless you're planning on tying your ipad to a Mac/iphone/ipod.

I can't imagine it would hold any weight over an actual keyboard for word processing. I expect there to be a lot of unregistered keystrokes and lots of "wrtng lke his" by accident.

I think that the iPad is just about consumption of media. At least that is what Apple is telling me. For school I would recommend a netbook because you can run office and other random programs you find on the internet such as sketch up.

I am thinking of buying a Kindle personally.Just want the reading thing, but 259$....kind of much
I use the Barnes and Noble Nook, which, while being the exact same price, is quite nice. I've had it for a couple of months, and the books are cheap, the reading is easy, and it can even play music files, although it can't hold a great deal of them. I'm not sure how it compares to a Kindle, but I like it.
I saw that for sale and was interested in it as well, what format does their ebooks use? That's another reason the Ipad is kinda warming up on me, it supports a large amount of the formats used.

So far from what I've seen here no one really OWNS one....

So let me say my word on this...
First off, I hate most apple products, I would never use a Mac for a computer, thats just foolish, they're terrible as far as computers go and what not... but I will say they're portable line of products is amazing, I've been using an iPhone3GS for a year now and I love the thing, and when the iPad came out I bought one for my mother (Who is rather bad with computers) for her birthday gift, and ended up due to in my attempt to get one as soon as possible having another that was shipped to me, and instead of returning it I just kept it.

So after a few weeks I can say its actually a very good product, I mean, as far as taking notes down I post pretty much everything here from it, and I can type rather fast on it. No where near my 100+wpm I can do on a keyboard, but I'm still if its on a flat surface hitting 50wpm+ on the thing. So I have no problem, the Pages app is great for note taking, and even the note app is rather good.

So personally I have never felt the need for a keyboard dock on it, but I can see how it might be usefull if you're in one spot for a long time typing.

The battery lasts forever, and I mean I've never had it die on me before I can, without it being an inconvience to me, get home and plug it in while I use my main computer. It can stream netflix, browse the internet, pretty much all day with no problem.

As far as books go, you can use Apples book store, but you also get access to the Kindle App, which means that you can get any book from either service, so whatever has the best price you can get it from there.

So yeah, I'd say if it looks good to you, get it.

It's made my netbook untouched.

I own one and I am using it now. Yes, you can watch the escapists vids too! The horizontal keyboard is a dream to type on and you don't really need a bluetooth keyboard if you are not planning on buying some kind of stand.

Good points you brought up. Can anyone tell me what the average battery life is for a netbook, compared to the Ipad? I checked out the link to newegg and that smooth ride had about 4.5 hours. Which is less than optimal for me. I know it could probably be adjusted to extend battery life, but are there other models with more outstanding batteries?

Ipad = GIANT Ipod.

Thats it. Thats all it is. A giant-sized Ipod.
Nintendo and Apple must be laughing at how easily it is to sell the same product to people by giving it a slight upgrade (excluding a FLASH, because for some reason the good folks at Apple thought giving a phone with a camera that is useless in any environment that does not have the lighting of a porn film studio a VIDEO CAMERA instead of a MUCH NEEDED FLASH was a good idea).

That said, I adore my Iphone... except when it doesn't play flash.
Which means that like 90% of the web content I'd enjoy, such as virtually any content on this site is unavailable.

No.. if i need a portable COMPUTER, I'll buy a laptop.
If I want a phone with some browsing or useful applications on the go, I have an Iphone.
If I want to listen to music, I carry my Zune.

As they taught me in Pirate-Ninja Spy school: Use the best necessary tool for the job you want done right.

Also, where stuff with tons of pockets. Pockets are our friends. Pockets save lives.
Seriously... pockets separate man from the animals. Think about it, every single hero in every game you've ever played always wore vests or jackets or trenchcoats or chainmail with tons of pockets.

Plus, chicks dig guys who always carry condoms.

Mine lasted about 3 hours >_> I always kept mine plugged in.... unless you buy an extended battery, but I don't know how long those last.

Thats gross! Whats the point of a netbook if the battery lasts so short <_<

So I began thinking "What could double as an Ereader, and a simple good word processing tool?" And then it hit me, a new laptop! IPAD!
Fixed that for you.

Ipad basically has niche uses - presenting stuff to a small group and as a star-trek style data pad, essentially. Taking notes in class sounds like it would fit into the latter category, and so long as you've got a PC for actually getting stuff done on, I see no problems.

Would recommend getting to an Apple Store to try one out first, though.

Or, of course, you could get 2 laptops for the same price. Just saying ;)

It really depends on the model. Some of them get close to ten hours, others get closer to 3. Generally the models with Pine Trail CPUs, integrated Intel GPUs, and 6-cell batteries have the longest runtime.

i have used my sisters ipad and i have to say, it is better than i expected. its only downfall is the touch screen. i know this is the main feature of the ipad and there is nothing specifically wrong with it, it works fine, but i just dont like touch screens.

Hey Guys,

Do you own an Ipad?
How is the virtual keyboard?
Should I think about purchasing an actual keyboard?

I took a look at Ereader formats, and the IPad is compatible with Kindle and most other formats, so I think I am set there.

-Deo
I own an Ipad it's a great device for all your light computing needs such as web browsing and email.

personally i like the virtual keyboard, it's very responsive to my touch and the text prediction is pretty good. i would recommend that if you're taking notes to hold the pad in landscape. typing is much easier that way. also, there are other apps that are helpful in taking notes such as Pages.

i haven't tried the seperate keyboard because i prefer using the virtual one.

personally i really don't like netbooks, they are too small not good for much in my experiences with them.

I have a new Asus netbook and it claims to last 11 hours on a full charge. I had it with me all through PAX East and it didn't die on me so I would assume the claim is true. And it only cost $260 on sale at Best Buy.

Yeah, my mom got an ipad, and we really enjoy it. There is really a lot you can do with it too! We got the 3g version for our vacation to california in a few days, and its really great! Great battery life, can hold many movies and songs, and is just an all around fun machine to have. I thknk what throws everyone off is that it has no specific purpose, its just kind of an all around machine.

I've seen some claim around 10 hours.
