Historical accuracy? This is from a company that made NAZI ZOMBIES! Sheesh. And it's not hard to imagine that there could be a reason for using some of these weapons. Perhaps the government has kept a lid on the best weapons to only be deployed with their black operators to ensure they would always outgun their enemies. And keep in mind this is a post MW2 age we live in. You need a bunch of guns and they all need a different 'feel' to them, to keep the repeated playing interesting. If you did more research, you would have found that a majority of the weapons used in Vietnam were the same as used in WWII. M1911, M1 Carbine, Thompson Machine Gun, Springfield, and M1 Garand were all used in Vietnam. Also in every other COD. I'm glad for the variety of weapons to choose from, even if it isn't perfectly accurate.

These guys are special forces. They always get prototypes and the very latest technology. Or something.
That doesn't explain how the other side gets their hands on them.

Clearly, the spec ops dude amassed 1.21 GIGGAWATTS and went into the future, getting himself some space age weaponary.

NAh but seriously, thats just laziness on part of the developers.

Either have correct era weapons, or change the time it takes place in.
That last line to me would make games sorta restrictive. Especially if the game was, lets say, about a future cyborg soldier thing going back in time and shooting Hitler in the face with a shrink ray so it could step on him.

Shrink ray or boring WWII gun...hmmmmm...

As a gun nut the thing that bothers me the most is the fact that the makarov has more stopping power than the colt 1911.
Only thing that bothered me actually. The storyline is a fictional one, about a fictional Vietnam front (the Vietcong did NOT do those large attacks, I mean that was over the top large). And why not just make the production time on the guns fictional, an alternate universe might have gotten the guns sooner or somthing. And it was fun seeing the G11 in a game again, I love that gun for some reason.

Last night I was aiming to kill some time before Conan started, and I decided to look at what weapons appeared in Black Ops. What I saw confused me, as the last mission took place on February 26, 1968.

Pistols:
CZ 75 (1975)

Submachine Guns:
MAC-11 (1972)
Heckler & Koch MP5K Prototype (1976)
SITES Spectre M4 (1980s)
OTs-02 Kiparis (1976)

Assault Rifles
FAMAS F1 FELIN (base weapon 1978, in-game used variant late 1990s)
AKS-74U [mislabeled as AK-74u & misclassified as a SMG] (1979)
Galil ARM (base weapon 1972)
Steyr AUG (patented 1974, introduced into service 1977)
Colt Commando (early 1970s)
Heckler & Koch G11 (1980s)

Shotguns
Franchi SPAS-12 (1979)

Sniper Rifles
Accuracy International Arctic Warfare (1982)
Walther WA 2000 (1982)
Heckler & Koch PSG-1 (1970s)

Launchers
SA-14 Gremlin (1974)

I'm pretty sure if I looked into it more, I'd find more weapons in the game that technically shouldn't be in the game since they weren't invented yet. How could Treyarch screw up this badly? Doe this effect how you view Blops/Treyarch? For me, I've lost all respect for the developer for this, even though I love Call of Duty 2: Big Red One and I thought that the Russian levels in WaW were interesting enough, but this is just too much for me.
Ok. While most of these are correct, the FAMAS Felin came out in 2001. Just saying >> (don't know if anyone else has pointed this out... too lazy to check)

Ever been on Call of Duty? seriously, majority of the people on call of duty are like what Noble Cookie described, 10 times in under an hour you will find someone swearing because he got killed, or because he hates shotguns, or because he was sniped, or because he sucks and he thinks people are hackers.

Secondly it is better to have historical accuracy and have fun in a game, after all we do buy games for fun and entertainment. If they go and make an inaccurate shooting game why does it have to be related to something that has already happened? why not just create something entirely different.

Lastly, people might go and buy Call of Duty to play with their friends but when they go online and start being dicks to people by calling them all kinds of vulgar things because they are pissed off, it stops being fun and it starts being a composite of swearing, yelling, gun shots and explosions which no one seriously needs to hear. If you haven't seen someone basically addicted to Call of Duty like I have, and who is what Noble Cookie and I have described, and who has a family, then maybe you shouldn't be saying that they're just normal and respectable people because a lot of them aren't, a lot of them are addicts and do sit on their couches all day playing call of duty screaming into a head set.
I play Call of Duty, and I am, for the most part, a normal person. I work a 40+ hour week. I'm married. Gaming is one of several hobbies I enjoy.

I seldom use a headset, and if I do I am not discussing works of poetry or literature, I am going to be talking about the game - sometimes, if I die, I may swear. I may not. It depends on my mood at that given moment.

Because there are children online who swear, and shout, and behave like cavemen, you cannot automatically assume everyone who plays the game online is a mouthbreathing, foulmouthed retard with no attention span.

Your assertions are unfounded. Your assumptions are unwarranted. You have leaped to a conclusion based on minimal evidence, in order to spew your own mindless vitriol against a community you were clearly biased against from the outset.
You are closeminded, bullheaded and apparently lack the ability to form a functionally rational argument. This makes you a poor debater and my subsequent opinion of you is low. I do not expect to see my expectations raised in the future, as you would likely rather insist your baseless accustations are reasonable and only seek out likeminded individuals to breed your contempt rather than contend with the possibility you are mistaken, your beliefs riddled with inaccuracy.

Obviously it's not supposed to be realistic. But CoD4 made an effort to be somewhat plausible.

But what actually irritates me is how CoD is the face of modern warfare (who could've guessed it?) for pretty much the whole shooter market and the mainstream media that watches the sales go up. And it spawns so many military tech-loving (NATO only) gunerotica douchebags that it's grating that the bullshit is now piled on this thick.

Why can't they go and get their knowledge from Arma 2, like us respectable people?

You need a bunch of guns and they all need a different 'feel' to them, to keep the repeated playing interesting.
An earlier thread showed how the stats of all similarly-classed guns are almost the same. And they all fire bullets with parachutes on the end that slow them down at just over point-blank range.

Also, when did the AIAW sniper appear in Black ops?

And I don't remember the Spas-12 being in the last level.
1.) Don't remember when.
2.) As far as I remember, it wasn't in the last level. But I put the date of the last level just to show how far off the guns listed were.

Frankly, I don't know why it's so important to use real weapons in a videogame. It makes sense in hardcore simulators, which Black Ops is not.

I don't wank myself dry to Guns n Ammo so no Mr. OP I don't particularly care if the guns aren't realistic in CoD.

As always I see the omnipresent, elitist, d-bags are here to shit all over anything that is in any way slightly connected to CoD. I know my words will be drowned in an ocean of bile, vitriol and the maddeningly endless repetition of the word sheep, which gets chucked around so much it's probably best we find a new name for the farmyard animal, but I'll go on to say you're not in any way, shape or form superior to another gamer simply because your taste in games differs. The fact anyone can possibly come to that conclusion baffles me to no end.

Now thats out of my system you can go back to your scheduled mud slinging.

This is why I felt that there should be an "era" selection before you choose your gametype, like WW2 era, Vietnam era, ETC so you can choose what weapons are avaliable to the players.

but isn't Call of Duty's selling point to be "realistic"? and all that stuff? Historical accuracy is part of that. That's where this whole "brown shooter" phase started, with "realistic shooters" so treyarch as screwed up even more eh?

well I'm not a fan of a lot of FPSs in general so, hey it doesn't affect me, but just pointing out... it's part of your selling point...
I highly doubt that Treyarch listed realism as a selling point. Realistic guns(look-wise and name)? Maybe. But Call of Duty: Black Ops isn't supposed to be a incredibly realistic game and no one should think of it as such.

Maybe you are thinking of ARMA2 or Operation Flashpoint, or whatever other war simulators there are.

The idea is that the game is set during the cold war. The cold war technically lasted till the late 90's. I get the feeling they were going for the whole "these battles didn't necessarily take place during the story mode."
