EDIT: Looks like I need to makes a few things clear:
- It's not just the poor choice of weapons that made me loose all respect for Treyarch. The screwy story, poor voice acting, the poorly constructed characters and many other factors in Blops (as well as in WaW) led me to despise Treyarch. The mess with the guns was the the last straw.
Poor voice acting? I thought Black Ops voice acting was pretty on par with all the other CoD games. In fact I think Victor Reznov's voice is some of the best I've heard from Call of Duty (it is Gary Oldman after all). Also I thought the characters in Treyarch's games were actually better, or at least more complex, than their Infinity ward counterparts.
But yeah, the story is screwed no matter how you look at it.
Mason (played by Sam Worthington) keeps switching accents. He goes from a basic American accent to an Aussie accent several times, and I'm pretty sure he went southern a few times. I believed Reznov's Russian accent to be piss poor, Bowman's (that's the guy Ice Cube played, right?) line deliveries lacked conviction and Woods often switched from being calm to borderline crazy sounding far too often.
Yes, in a way I guess that the characters in Blops are a bit more complex, but I think that's partly due to the ever confusing story and many twists. But I could more easily sympathize with the characters in MW2, even the antagonists because they were all so well yet simply fleshed out. Yes, I still hate the antagonist in both MW2 and Blops, but the reasons why I hate them are so vastly different.
In MW2, I hated them for their actions and beliefs (among other things). They were both played so well by their voice actors, their characters were all the more convincing. And since the characters in MW2 were done so well, I actually cared when they were killed off by those assholes. In Blops however, I just found them annoying and the only reason why I disliked them was because they killed Dimitri, the only character in both WaW and Blops that I cared about. But even though they killed Dimitri, I still didn't care for them much partly because both the level Dimitri was killed in and Dimitri's return were pointless. Once I saw Dimiri, I told my brother "He's only here so that they can kill him off and have a reason to hate these dudes." This guess was cemented when he predictably started talking about returning home, which in a Treyarch game is just begging for you to die. And thus he did, and because it was so obvious he was going to die, his death didn't mean nearly as much as it should have.
(also because me and my brother knew the level was mainly included so that they could throw in Nazi Zombies)
