I moved to a place that hated me for no proper reason when I Was twelve and decided on a career I wanted. The following year I became epileptic and found out that because of the epilepsy I Would not only not be able to persue this career, or many of the others I wanted, but I would never be able to drive. The rest of the years were shitty while I put up with plenty of bullying, varying illnesses and pills that made me feel like absolute shit and doctors that never listened to me. Any time my life seemed to show any positivity something terrible would happen, someone else in my family would get extremely ill or die. Once I left high school things didn't improve, there were no jobs nearby and traveling takes too long without the ability to drive and buses are unreliable as fuck here, I tried to get into college but then I had to get my gallbladder removed and missed the deadline. After recovering I tried again only to find out I couldn't get the TB test I needed because kaiser randomly stopped covering me and refused to cover me again and no other medical company would cover me without giving me any reason and I still can't get a damn job despite applying for everywhere, even the fast food places.

But yeah, having your ps3 break sucks.
I thought this was a one-up contest thread.. That is until I saw the PS3 tidbit. I think you win the "Shittiest Life While Still Living in a Not 3rd World Country" award. I hope things improve for you.

I just snapped, sorry. I'm calmer now. The title and OP's post got to me. "Screwed over my whole life" implies something horrible has been happening a lot. Not that someone had the *Gasp* gall to dare charge to put their expertise to work in the off chance that someone didn't know how to do the same thing. But someone wanted payment for some specialized work, that clearly means OP's entire life has been constantly screwed up, right? Right? The phasing of the title just bothered me, some things do that.
No, I understand, I knew what the OP meant once I read his post, but I was expecting something more horrible as well.

But seriously, I wish you the best of luck.

I remember one time my friends tower died on her and when she she brought it abck to the shop and asked how much to fix it, she got this ridiculous price, I just opened it up hovered off the heat sink and fan and it worked grand.

I thought it was common knowledge by now that "tech support consultant" is synonymous with "indoor hustler/conman".

Im not even gonna get into the stories I've heard from some people in that particular industry. It's near disgraceful the amounts of money they basically steal from people, taking advantage of their ignorance...

Its like when you buy a Computer. It will literally cost half as much if you do it yourself and make it out of parts.

Pretty much anything that is mechanical/technological will be overpriced.
but you can say that about anything, for any given car there is only about $100 worth of steel and fabric in there so are you saying that it would be cheaper to just go make a car your self? how about shoes theirs only $3 at maximum of fabric in shoes, your paying 10% for the product and 90% for the manufacturing

Sorry I didn't mean to insult you. Having the comparison it makes my wording sound incredibly exaggerated and melodramatic. Again, I didn't mean to insult your life.

Its like what auto mechanics do. So I'm sure tech people do. I mean, look at what they charge for data recovery, its crazy.

Also when I read your title my mind went straight to the gutter.
That highlighted statement is true. While I was working as a mechanic I can't tell you how many people got screwed. I'm glad I'm out of that field now.
I'm kinda glad I do have an honest auto mechanic, but the only problem with him is that he isn't reliable on time. Took him three 2 and a half sessions to replace my starter.

On topic postage: Really I don't get why you feel ripped off OP, the guy was just charging for his specific expertise. If you didn't know how to fix it you could either have made the situation much worse by trying your hand at repairing it or you wouldn't have been able to fix it at all. People who can design logos don't go to a logo designing company and complain they feel ripped off because they can just do it themselves.
I just feel like $300 an hour is a little excessive of an estimate for taking out about fifteen screws and blowing. I know he didn't know what was wrong, maybe it needed something else or a replacement fan, but I also know for a fact he wouldn't have lowered the price when he found out I had a dust clog. I'm not saying detailed technical knowledge isn't valuable or isn't worth money but there's a difference between say taking apart the heat sink and just blowing and he should scale his prices accordingly.

Same here actually. To me the title sounded like your dog died the day after your girlfriend dumped you or something.

Well what car you have will effect time of repair, some cars are uber frustrating.

I lol'd at this. Not at your situation mind you but I was thinking something similar when I read this thread title only to find a little whiner complaining about a PS3 breaking. Misleading title at the least.
Now I see that the thread is actually about technicians charging you for easy fixes.
