Valve didn't actually handle the PS3 port, that was EA. So they weren't going to patch it anyway, this was at a time where the PS3 was considered a "waste of time" by them, look it up, that was really said by them.

This is extremely off-topic but your avatar looks familiar, I'm going to take a stab at this....Anastasia? It looks like it but I'm not 100% sure.
Off topic: Yes, that is Bartok the Bat from Anastasia.

OT: Wow. And this is coming from the same guys who made it so only those who bought Portal 2 for the PS3 would be able to have access to the PC version for free. Sounds a wee bit hypocritical to me.

I always thought the PS3/PC crossover for Portal 2 was Valve's way of apologizing for slating the PS3.

Off-topic: I got it right! Booyah!

Huh. I never actually thought about it that way...

Well the past is the past I suppose, as I don't even play the Orange Box anymore.

truth be told, sometimes these games are not for everyone, they weren't for me.My wife loves Portal and things Half Life 2 is fun though.

Basically someone's masterpiece will be someone's piece of garbage so to speak, not saying these games are but you get the idea

I finally got the Orange Box a week ago and started playing it today, I finished Portal in 3 hours and finally thought, what is so great about this game, I understand that it is funny GlaDoS is undeniably hilarious with her psycho intent but the game didn't live up to all the hype surrounding it, I think I would've had more fun if there was a soundtrack during levels, silence tends to make games feel boring to me.

Then I started play Half Life 2 and it may be because I'm only like 1 or 2 hours into it but it doesn't seem as spectacular or amazing as others have said it is, and to me it has the same above soundtrack problem. Also the whole Gordon not speaking doesn't make it more immersive to me in fact it kind of breaks immersion when they say something to the character and there is absolutely no response.
Exactly what I thought of it. Not bad games, but severely over-hyped.

The problem is that you're playing games that came out four years ago, for some of them 7 years ago, and expecting them to perform like they are brand new. Sure they're still good games, but not nearly as groundbreaking as they were when they first came out.
It's a good point, but I was specifically told that all three games are better than anything coming out nowadays, so I used that as my reference point. Probably doesn't help that the people that told me I had to play them (that should be read in a threatening manner) were fans to the point of religious fanatacism though.

1: Opinions differ so just because most people think of them as great games doesn't mean you must like them too.

2: Nothing lives up to the hype. You've been hearing how great these games are for years now and you come in expecting orgasm inducing things to occur which just doesn't happen, your perception has been altered from the start for better or for worse.

3: Whopty fucking doo what do you want - congratulations? I don't see any discussion value in the initial post just a not particularly interesting statement.

You obviously weren't paying too much attention to the soundtrack then:
And no, those aren't the only songs in the game, either. Just a sampling of what you must have missed, 'tis all.

1st: Ignore hype, in fact don't even use the word, its become a buzzword on this forum lately and its starting to piss me off.

2nd: These games are old, they were awesome at the time but games age fast. Sure a great game is always a great game but a new player coming to them with high expectations and not giving regard their age is likely to be disappointed in some respects; game hold their greatness but not their shine.

3rd: I wasn't that taken with portal when I first played it, I kept expecting the tutorial to end and the game to begin... but then I cottoned on to what the game was about and now i've played it though 3 or 4 times, its great in that its innovative and has spot on themes and humour, as evidenced by the memes it spawned.

4th: half life 2 isn't that great, its alright as a sequel to the original and at the time it was released there weren't many FPS games with the story driven gameplay and mix of vehicles and physics puzzles etc... it is a good game but you have to have a little patience to get though it, its not a game that pimps itself and constantly throws action at the player to keep them interested, you need an attention span longer than 5 seconds.

I just played the game and it is still pretty fresh in my mind but I don't really remember hearing any of those, I must admit I did start playing my music when I thought it was too quiet so the soundtrack may have started and I just didn't notice.

I understand that all games aren't going to immediately throw the most action packed adventure at you in the beginning levels but it still shouldn't feel like a chore to get to the action part, its not about having a short attention span, its just if its not interesting in the 1st 1-2 hours people are going to switch off. Also throwing action at the player from the get go isn't exactly a bad thing, it gets player immersed and interested in the game from the beginning, its like tv shows the pilot episode is really important. I'm just trudging through to try and find the action packedness before I return it to get my money back (not because it is a bad game just need the cash).

My intention was never to start a massive discussion in the first place, just stating my experience with the Orange Box and wanted to see the replies of others.
