Last night, I finished the first anime.
It was really good, and I'd like another show to watch.

I also enjoyed Trigun, and I've liked Miyazaki films since I was little. I gave Soul Eater a shot, and I found it alright, though a little lacking (I only saw the first episode, and I'm guessing it gets better).
I'm looking for something actiony, but with a solid plot and characters, that isn't too goofy, but allows itself to be funny. Nothing way too violent/ sexual, though, since my mom tends to look over my shoulder while I watch shows.

What do you folks recommend?
I have access to basic Hulu and Netflix, and whatever (legal) sites let you watch online.

Have you watched Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood? I think that's a requirement after watching the original, especially as I find Brotherhood to be superior in most aspects.
I'd like to take a crack at it eventually, but I want to wait a while before watching such a similar series.

Sub or dub? If subbed, the seiyuu cast changed quite a bit, so wait a couple months... then launch into 64 episodes of awesome.

OT:

GitS:SAC - first to come to mind, cyberpunk, season 1's definitely the better of the two (movie was OK)
Durarara!!/Baccano! - supernatural pulp fiction (set in modern day Tokyo/1920's America respectively, grouped as same studio and same style)
Ergo Proxy - headfuck (sort of), though if you can get hold of the Shinsen sub, that's probably the best as they provide an episode by episode cultural and philosophical reference guide
Le Chevalier D'Eon - pre-Revolutionary War, espionage/fantasy/cross-dressing... thing (*shrug* might be your thing, I enjoyed it)
Gankutsuou - le Comte de Monte Cristo in spehss!
Gunslinger Girl - of the few real 'unique' takes on the girls-with-guns genre

Filmwise, watch Sky Crawlers (then watch it again and ask yourself what the underlying themes remind you of).

Dub, man. I may be blaspheming, but I prefer watching in English, since I prefer to read when I want to read, and watch when I want to watch.
And I heard about the French one. It might be hand, since I'm studying French as a second language. I should probably get the game about Joan of Arc, since it was essentially Final Fantasy Tactics in France.

Haha, having seen thousands of these threads, I have saved a generic response that I hopes imparts my fellow anime watchers with key wisdom.

Every time on these threads, people will put the anime they especially enjoyed. I feel this is too personal. Too subjective.

So you know what? Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he can get his own damn fish so he never has to ask anyone for their fish.

Watch brotherhood. it's WAYY better than the first anime.
and at least get to the forth episode of soul eater, That's when the plot starts to kick in. You have to at least meet all the main characters, Note:Black Star sucks in the first few episodes but has some great character development later on.

Gun X Sword is a mecha anime that I'll remember when I'm an old man. It's a bit more characterization and drama than mecha, but the mecha bits are still excellently done.

Edit: I forgot to mention that the full series is on Funimation's channel on YouTube.

Heh. This is the second thread of the type I've started, but I think I've made up for it with some of my others.
It's just that I'm pretty clueless when given a bajillion choices (Netflix has a great selection that I can watch, but I don't know what's good), and I like to hear what people think before I commit to something. That's why I read several reviews before getting a game.

I'd recommend Code Geass or Death Note if you haven't watched either of those. They're both very good in my humble opinion. Death Note doesn't have much action, but you won't care because its just very good. Code Geass has plenty of action (with giant robots mostly) and a fairly good story. Both are kinda dramatic (more so than FMA), but allow some comedy relief.

Gunslinger Girl
Detective Conan (subbed, not dubbed. The dub is... meh)
Uhh... The gundam series I guess...

Higurasi no naku koro ni is my personal favorite.

If you can take some scarier stuff this has an awesome atmosphere to it. Though it do get pretty messy at times.

Otherwise
Code geass
Tengen toppa gurren lagann
Death note
Pandora Hearts
Just from the top of my head. Each one has its own strengths and is awesome in its own way.

Spice and Wolf, it makes economics and trading seem exciting. FUNimation has a youtube channel with stuffs on it.
The thing that immediately came to mind is how much fun Settlers of Catan, despite how boring it should be.
If that's true of the series, then it sounds awesome.

Bleach. SO MUCH BLEACH. snip
Emphasis on 'So Much'. What does it have, 250 episodes? Jesus.

OT: You will have to watch FMA: Brotherhood eventually, but yeah, watching it so soon after the first may be boring.

I always recommend Code Geass. Give it a whirl.

I'd suggest two shows: Durarara! (seems just about perfect for that description) and Code Geass (though this can get a tad bit fanservice-y at times, there's nothing more than some characters in swimsuits or particularly fanservice-esque angles). I also quite enjoyed Baccano!, and think that you would as well... but that may be a bit too violent, depending on your definition of "too violent."

Well, if you want to simplify it ...

I recommend D.Gray-Man.

Gonna be honest, I didn't like D.Gray-Man that much, though that's because the manga became damn near incomprehensible (literally, couldn't read it, because the art was too cluttered).

But, it's similar. Very similar. Right down to the "Young Male Protagonist with Unusual Arm joins shady organization and combats a mysterious unspeakable evil with the help of a colorful cast of characters with abilities related to his own".

The anime's perfectly enjoyable, but I, or anyone else, will not say it is as good Fullmetal Alchemist.
