Last night, I finished the first anime.
It was really good, and I'd like another show to watch.

I also enjoyed Trigun, and I've liked Miyazaki films since I was little. I gave Soul Eater a shot, and I found it alright, though a little lacking (I only saw the first episode, and I'm guessing it gets better).
I'm looking for something actiony, but with a solid plot and characters, that isn't too goofy, but allows itself to be funny. Nothing way too violent/ sexual, though, since my mom tends to look over my shoulder while I watch shows.

What do you folks recommend?
I have access to basic Hulu and Netflix, and whatever (legal) sites let you watch online.
I suggest Busou Renkin. It might miss you're mark by a little, as it tends to get pretty goofy at times, but overall it's a great anime. Lots of action, great characters, and a surprisingly deep plot for only having 26 episodes. Give it a shot, and I don't think you'll be disapointed.

Code Geass is also very good. Great characters and plot, and lots of action, but it might take itself a little too seriously for you, there isn't much comic relief in there. Also, I don't know what you mean by too sexual, but there are several scenes with scantily clad women, but no nudity that I can recall. I don't recall anything else that is even the least bit sexual, other than the occasional boob-bounce when Kallen gets in a fight. once again, give it a shot and I don't think you'll be disappointed. Be careful, code geass takes a while to really start and there isn't much action at all in the first episode. it's two 26 episode seasons as I recall.

I'd suggest two shows: Durarara! (seems just about perfect for that description) and Code Geass (though this can get a tad bit fanservice-y at times, there's nothing more than some characters in swimsuits or particularly fanservice-esque angles). I also quite enjoyed Baccano!, and think that you would as well... but that may be a bit too violent, depending on your definition of "too violent."
Nothing that wouldn't be acceptable in a Low R/ High PG-13 rated movie, really. I don't mind gore (The Thing is one of my favorite movies), but I don't want something really nasty. I'm not generalizing about anime, here, it's just that some folks here ave different tastes, and some may recommend different styles of show.
Also, props for the Kratos avatar. I'm about 20 hours into that game, since I was stuck with just my wii and some old Gamecube games for a week.

Well, it's just that if my mom sees any woman on my computer screen (she could be wearing a loose sweater and a barrel, for all she cares) she asks if I'm watching porn.

Spice and Wolf, it makes economics and trading seem exciting. FUNimation has a youtube channel with stuffs on it.
The thing that immediately came to mind is how much fun Settlers of Catan, despite how boring it should be.
If that's true of the series, then it sounds awesome.
There's also the renaissance style paganism vs the church theme, it's interesting. There are also moments of food porn, like describing the honey pickled peaches.

and for educational purposes linking food porn just in case you don't know, one warning it is tvtropes, the blackhole of time. [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FoodPorn]

Busou Renkin is a pretty good bet then. The love interest isn't as buxom as most anime girls, in fact none of the female characters are, although the main characters sister is close. and the only girl that sees much screen time is the love interest(the whole anime really focuses on only like 2-4 characters, the rest don't get a whole lot of screen time). Although, i did just remember that one of the villains wears a banana hammock, so you might want to be careful there.

Well, the major scenes I'm thinking of that may not be acceptable are: 1) a character gets his hand forced onto a railroad track while on a moving train, though I think most of that is shot from a fairly discretionary angle, 2) someone gets shot through the head on-screen, and 3) a few different people get tortured rather violently. So I'll let you make up your own mind on that, I suppose. I wouldn't put it anywhere higher than low-R, myself, but it has been a while since I last watched it. If that's not too much for you, then I'll give Baccano! a resounding recommendation. It's one of my favorite anime.
And thanks, heh. Tales of Symphonia is a great game, even if it is a bit old.

The remake of The Guyver is pretty good but the show ended kinda abruptly.

Death Note is fanfuckingtastic if you are fine with most of the characters sitting and talking the whole show.

Oh and I have to ask if you saw Fullmetal Alchemist: The Conqueror of Shambala. Its a movie and technically "the end" of the first Full Metal Alchemist series. Its not like those pointless One Piece or Bleach movies.

And I believe the guy who did Trigun did an anime called Gungrave but I'm not sure if thats the right one. Its worth looking into but I haven't seen it myself.

Evangelion is also a pretty good anime. It has some pretty dark overtomes tho.

Some of those might be what you're looking for.

Sounds about as bad as the shows I watched when I was ten (mostly Stargate, so no problem there)
I've got some free time tomorrow that I should put into that game before I go to work.
Just wondering, but about how many hours are there total? Since I'm at about 20, and I'm up to the first time in the sewers under the city in the alternate dimension, I'm guessing there's 40 more hours or so? The back of the box says over 100 hours, but that probably takes into account everything needed to 100% the game, which I don't plan to do my first time through.

not to mention creepy as all hell. He stashes his stuff in it too, and whenever he needs something he goes fishing around in it. It's truly terrifying to behold. Like I said, Busou Renkin tends to mock itself and never takes itself too seriously.

I'm not a big anime watcher myself, and I only really have access to Netflix, but I just happened to finish FMA myself, and I moved on to Soul Eater. Even though it certainly takes a while to get into gear, once it starts going I actually found it to be pretty decent, so I'd recommend giving that another shot.

The English dub of Baccano!. Notice how I bold the words English dub. Baccano! has one of the most well-produced English dubs of all time. I would even say that the English dub[footnote]Have I stuck the words English dub in your head enough? =P[/footnote] is better than the Japanese and is the best of the best. As for the actual show, it "Chronicles" three separate incidents from the years 1930, 1931, and 1932, all of which involve immortal beings. And don't distress, I didn't spoil something major in the story when I mentioned immortal beings. Quoting the back of the box of the complete collection...

Just remember, Baccano! ain't about beginnings and ends. It's about the twists and turns, bub.
Also, this anime is pretty violent. It's not really sexual from what I can tell (I'm currently on episode 5), but you do see bones sticking out of mutilated bodies. So yeah, that's probably a bad example based on your previous description of what you want. Moving on...

......

You may want to check out Durarara!, as it fits your description and doesn't go into too much violence or sexual acts. Those two are definitely themes, but they don't overtake the series. Durarara! is also similar to Baccano![footnote]I just now noticed that both series end with an exclamation point.[/footnote] in the fact that almost every person is the main character and has his/her moment in the spotlight.

......

If you're feeling a bit adventurous, you can always try this little series called Serial Experiments Lain. It is the most strange anime I've ever seen, but that's what makes it so appealing. There is violence in the series, but most times you'll be wondering what happened in the scene prior (or what's currently going on) to really notice it to a degree of it being impactful.

FMA brotherhood! never stop!

also, i like cowboy bebop, gurren lagann, ghost in the shell, and one piece. not sure what any of them really have to do with FMA, but i liked that and i like those, so maybe you will too? if you're looking for more alchemy, you're SOL as far as i know, but if you just like strong characters and original story arcs, go for the ones i listed.
