I think the first Diablo is better. There, I've said it. Deal with it.

I actually approve of your post.

The first one had better atmosphere and better design overall.
The second one made the process and feeling of killing, looting, selling better and more enjoyable though.

'Tis alright, I suppose. I burned out on D2, so I doubt I'll play it again (also, the reason why I didn't get D3). I certainly wouldn't stop others from playing it, though - whatever floats your boat.

I don't think that strategy guide will help you, though - if it's for the vanilla version it certainly wouldn't - the patches rejigged everything - the 1.10 one in particular was a large game changer (pun intended). Well, it mostly made the many builds obsolete and the rest turned more boring but practical. Last patch I heard about was 1.12, I believe but I had stopped playing at that point, they may be up to 1.14-1.15 or something nowadays. Just look up builds/guides online, I remember using the ones on GameFAQs quite a lot. Or I dunno, if the Blizzard forums are inhabited and aren't a hellhole, you might try them, alternatively other specialised forums.

That's great.
I played Diablo 2 to death, eventually getting level 85 on my barbarian with a full IK set.
It burned me out pretty badly though, so I doubt I'll ever play it again.

I might be the minority here, but I think Diablo 3 is better.

I played Diablo II a lot with my Ex back in the day. I liked it for the most part, had a lot of fun with it. I didn't like it as much as Warcraft III, which is my favorite Blizzard game.

I have been thinking about getting into the Torchlight series, Diablo III seems to focus a lot on a mulitplayer experience and I am more for the single player experience. I think this is why I love games like Final Fantasy and Dragon Age so much. You can have that dungeon crawler feel, with random loot and rpg elemants, but be able to control a full party of different classes.

Games like Diablo and Borderlands seems like the experience would be better with a party of actual players and I prefer to game by myself. I hear Torchlight is a fun single-player experience.

the strategy guide is useless.

dealing with the online vs offline thing can be bullshit - your account with your characters WILL, given more then 3 months of inactivity, expire. I've lost hundreds of levels over the years to that, and all the gear that went with it.

I doubt you're in the minority. It's just that getting burned by something gets people more vocal than being content with it.

Why do you think Diablo 3 is better? Don't worry, I can think of a myriad of shortcomings on the part of D2 (that's why I don't consider being better than D2 a particularly big achievement), just asking out of curiosity.
I've got a few reasons.

1. I can re-spec in D3, in D2 I had to start over again if I placed a point wrong.
Sure, you could look it up online, but that is besides the point.

2. The end game is better.
Even hearing "Baal run" makes me a little nauseous to this day.

Those are the main reason.
I could probably think of more, so if it's needed just quote and ask.

Good for you OP, it's a great game and I'm sure you're going to be getting plenty of great hours out of it.

Mhmm, I agree with ya. Diablo 3 just feels a lot better to me, still can't bring myself to knock Diablo 2: LoD of the top spot for my favourite game of all time yet xD. Hopefully the expansion will provide that kick.

Does it need to though?
Diablo 2 was special back in the day, doesn't mean it will hold up to new releases.

I like it a lot from a gameplay perspective, but the story standpoint is kind of odd as most Blizzard games are. Considering how much backstory they put into their lore and yet how much of it is actually important to the game's plot.

For those that recommend Diablo I. Is there a way to run in the village? I tried it once a while ago, but that slow pace really bothered me.

Nope, there is no running in Diablo.
That little improvement came along with Diablo 2.

Diablo 1 was more atmospheric and the better RPG, in a way. It had more of a survival feel to it (no "restart in town and kill the half-dead Duriel on the next try") and I didn't just click away the "story" whenever I encountered bits and pieces of lore, like I did in the second game. I even loved Hellfire, especially the Crypt with its "audiologs" (yeah, it's a journal, fine). Awesome.

Diablo 2, however, was the more addictive game, the more action-oriented. Much heavier emphasis on loot. It was basically "travel around to many interesting, colourful, largely unconnected locales, kill stuff and see what you find".

Where Diablo 1 tried to really create a more consistent tone and allow for a gradual descent into darkness, Diablo 2 was more about the gameplay than the tone. Even Hell itself was brightly coloured and full of (comparably) cute monsters, where the last dungeons of Diablo 1 were steeped in shadows. They are very different and, to me, not easily comparable. I liked both for very different reasons.

One thing I know, though: I'll never forget the Halls of the Blind poem. Read it in the Warrior's voice and with a peculiar emphasis on the word "light".
I can see what you see not?
Vision milky, then eyes rot.
When you turn, they will be gone,
Whispering their hidden song.

Then you see what cannot be?
Shadows move where light should be.
Out of darkness, out of mind,
Cast down into the Halls of the Blind.
