I hate the term pretentious. If you don't like walking simulators then don't play them. Go play Duke Nukem Forever.
One has to try at least one to know if you don't like them (specially if it's one of the most talked about). That argument is as shallow as a pond in this case.
"I don't get it" and "it's pretentious" are never valid criticisms. You need to offer better explanations as to why you didn't like something.

Which Samtendo later did. I agree that diary entries may have been more interesting then dialogue. Heck, maybe have both. I also agree that $10 for a rather short game seems unreasonable.
How long is that game? If it's less than 2 hours, I'd use the refund system if the experience wasn't satisfactory. I'd rather evaluate games by quality (awesome per second) than quantity.
Its more or less 1 hour. Yes $9.99 for around 1 hour of gameplay.

And people were compliaining that Call of Duty's campaigns were too short.

I don't have any particular liking of Dear Esther, and like a lot of other people here, I thought it was an interesting idea, some pretty visuals and very little else. I played it once, found it rather meh(but decently atmospheric) and have no desire to play it again.

However, lack of gameplay elements aside, $10 isn't a terrible price for what's basically an short art game. That's pretty close to the cheapest a game is reasonably going to be priced without being outright free.

And frankly, I don't think Dear Esther being longer would make it better. On the contrary, one of it's saving graces was that it was brief. Even a much better game like Journey wouldn't have been nearly as good if it had been 10 hours long. Longer doesn't necessarily mean better.
