It's not the best game ever, but it's still amazing and it is unique, something which has become as rare as it gets. You probably won't go to gamer hell for not having played it, but it'd be a shame if you missed it.

Meh I didn't like it. I found it to be a rather dull experience while trying to trick me into thinking it was so deep. Why give me a huge world and no reason to explore it?
The colossi in the second half of the game tend to take a lot of health and stamina out of the main character, so there is a reason to explore the world, namely finding all the fruit growing on trees and the lizards with the white tail (to increase your health bar and stamina gauge respectively). Plus it looks amazing, and the fact that there are no enemies around gives it a rather serene atmosphere, which is a nice change from the usual.
You are not doing well if you are trying to convince me it was better than I think it is. Collectibles suck. They suck even more when you are trapped in an empty world. I do give it credit for it's graphics and the overall uniqueness of the game. It had a solid idea behind it. It just didn't appeal to me whatsoever. And I will admit there was one scene that broke my heart towards the end. Anyone who has played it will know exactly which one I mean so please don't ruin it for those that haven't. And this is just my opinion. I understand why others fell in love with it. I just didn't.

And no at the time I wasn't a shooting frat boy looking for non stop action. Infact at the time I was a complete Japanophile and had played maybe 2 FPSes.
No reason to be defensive, I didn't mean to step on your toes. And why would I try to change your mind about something you've already experienced and made up your mind about? That'd just be stupid.
Oh, and I also didn't mean to bang at the 'games are art' drum, I just like SotC is all... Ico and Braid are also considered to be wearing that label and I haven't played either.

I bought it for about 15 dollars when I got my PS3 (which, obviously, does have PS2 BC) and I loved it! However, it's not a game for everyone, because it's much more than a game.

Neither have I.
I've been meaning to pick it up, but I keep getting distracted by Final Fantasy games.
Strolling through a Game store,
"I have to find Shadow of the Colossus. Have to find Shadow of the Colo-
...Tactics, ey?" *picks up game*
"Let's have a look... *inaudible mumbling* Hmmmm."
"I'll buy this my good man!" *slams Final Fantasy Tactics on the desk*
Kinda like that, yeah. xD

It's almost impossible to search through the PS2 games without coming across a FF game or two. :D

I went out to look for Ico. Only place I found it was pre-owned and (considering that this game is about 10 years old) was £30!

Heh, i had the same issue. But luckily, I found the FF game right beside SotC. So it basically came down to this.
So i just chose what cover I thought was more epic and ended up gett SotC. I didn't regret it. Since its probably the most repetitive game that I never found repetitive(It makes sense) I loved it.
Yes you go around stabbing the 2 or 3 glowing points on the big bad(good?) monsters, but holy fuck was it ever epic. Ever stab yielded a ridiculous fountain of blood, evey attack from teh enemy was almost a insta kill(depending on your health) and getting to the glowing points on the colossus was never the same. In one instance I had to flip a 4 story tall tortoise with the giant geysers in teh area. Much easier said than done, since it wasn't asimple case of "make the water hit it", it actually had to be facing a certain way when the geyser hit it otherwise it would just lift up a little. Then you had to climb on its leg while it was flipped adn scale the side of its shell as it got back up. If you managed to ge this far then you simply had to not get thrown off while you went stab happy in its forhead.
Actually now that I think about it, you spend probably 1/3 of this game trying not to fall to your death. And trust me, the last thing you want to do is fall to your death, other wise you have to start all over again.
I figured out that if you stab him in the eye, he flings his head back in rage, at which point if you time it just right and let go(which is going against every instinct you have in this game) you'll land on his belt, thus eliminating the 5 minute climb down to a mere heart puonding 3 secind drop. This takes practice though, I died more times than I can count trying it out./advice

Really for me it's the mood it sets. The boss fights where fun too, but i like the feeling i get when the only companion you have in a large barren land is a horse.

It's... Oktastic in my opinion. Not bad, but if it's "Good" it's only "Pretty Good". The horse is retarded and aggravating, and I would have left it to look over the dead girl if I could have, but you can't so I didn't.

The one thing that really got me about it was how realistically Wander moves when using his sword and jumping and stuff.

It's a good game, but I don't feel compelled to finish it. I bought it because it sounded like one of those games you just have to play. I say take it or leave it. No big.

To be honest I didnt find it all that good, the enviroment is big but there almost nothing there, just the odd rock and its just a series of boss fights.

I didn't really think it was that impressive to be honest, the lousy controls and confusing map really distracted me from having a good time.

I didn't think you were stepping on my toes. That is just my attempt at sarcastic humor (which apparently failed).

Funny you mention Ico and Braid. I hated what little of Ico I played (like the first hour or 2)and I couldn't stomach the demo of Braid. I guess I am one of those uncultured souls with no appreciation of that kind of art. Meh I can live with that.

Huge fantasy atmospheric and empty world that's actually fun and good because it's empty, good story, unique gameplay, amazing soundtrack. Every colossus battle is unique and every setting where you fight them is amazing. My favorite is that bird like colossi in that lake. Damn that thing was huge. Finding your way to climb a colossi and finding it's weak points and trying to stay on it as it moves around trying to shake you off is an amazing experience. I've never played anything like it. And your horse plays an important part in the game.

It's a pretty neat and creative game that doesn't actually play that well and it isn't anywhere near as good as everyone says. It's good, but it isn't the oh god most amazing game ever that the internet would have you believe.
