I just beat fallout 3 but I feel like I didn't finish it. It was all so fast. It was great, I can say that. I can't continue to use my character, so that's over.

My question is fellow escapists, should I just play a new character (explain how the re-run can be longer, better, more complete) or should I just go onwards to Fallout: New Vegas.

While i'm at it, should I specialize in energy weps? It just seems that early ingame, energy weapons are rare and if you are able to find one, really really worn. I can't seem to get lock-picking right, I just don't understand it. If someone could explain that to me. Meelee weapons are useless, along unarmed, I think. Is it true?

Do you have the Broken Steel DLC? As that let's you continue past the final mission.

Did you get the GOTY edition? If not, change that, because it lets you go back and play more of the game after the main plot ends.

You want Broken Steel if you don't have it. Arguably, it's a better investment than New Vegas is now. I would say to wait until New Vegas is released with all of the DLC packs because like it or not, it will happen at some point. Possibly before Skyrim, possibly before the holiday season.

as said before, get the DLC. i always specialise in energy weapons, no idea why. lockpicking in every game takes a while to master the technique of: get a shit ton of bobby pins and practice a lot (thats what i did). i would consider starting again, just so you can make different decisions/play in a different style (did you have good karma? be a wanker. did you have bad karma? be a saint.) also, all of the DLC is good. Broken Steel allows continuation after completion, Anchorage gives a new mission which has a LOT of items at the end, etc.

My favorite part of Fallout 3 was just wandering around exploring the wasteland. The main plot was really uninteresting compared to the side quests. If you didn't do much exploring I'd strongly encourage you to keep playing.

Lockpicking is very easy once you understand it. You can pick Very Hard locks without breaking more than one, if you know what to do.

When you start lockpicking, tap A or D gently, to see if it meets any resistance - if it does the lockpick will bend. If you're careful, the lockpick won't bend too much. To open the lock, slowly move the lockpick sideways with the mouse, trying it by very gently tapping A or D at intervals. The longer it takes to meet the resistance after tapping A or D, the closer you are to unlocking.

It's like a game of Hot/Cold, if the time interval before your lockpick starts to bend increases, (press A or D longer before it bends) you're getting warmer. If the interval shortens, you're getting cold. If the interval is very short in the middle, it's safe to assume the sweet spot will be on either side. If both sides have short intervals, the sweet spot will be somewhere near the middle.

This illustrates what I mean, although the guy doesn't really know what he's talking about.

Melee weapons are useful against some things - for instance with the Pyromaniac perk, the shishkebab can be deadly against Super Mutants, or other large, slow enemies that you can ambush.

Melee weapons are best used in ambush, so get your stealth skill to a suitable level first, and don't try running up to ranged enemies swinging a sledgehammer.

Get Broken Steel to continue the game.

Energy weapons in the beginning are weak, focus on small guns. However, once the Enclave shows up, put some points into them. Plasma rifles murder things. They murder things quickly.

Lock picking is a test of patience. Pro-tip - Pick a random spot and turn, if it barely budges, try again on the other side. If it does budge a large amount, just adjust the pin a tiny bit. And, if you cancel out of the lockpick minigame before you fail to find the right spot 3 times, your pin wont break, and you can just try again.

Melee weapons are far from useless. In fact, they can be the most effective in the game, ESPECIALLY against robots. Robots have a hard time turning around, so just get up close and strafe them while wailing on them with whatever (combat knife is my personal preference).

Unarmed yeah, kind of useless.

in any bethesda(sp?) game... NEVER DO THE MAIN QUEST UNTIL YOU WANT TO END IT! the main quests are just so short. but the game itself has soooooo many things to do. so just go wandering about and do everything else. also... get the fallout3 dlcs!!! they are awesome!

To lockpick, you need to move the bobby pin in a position that allows it to be unlocked. If it stops, it is not in the right position, so move it to another until position and try again until you get it. The more it turns when trying to unlock it, the closer it is to the correct position. On harder difficulty locks the position is much more specific, while on lower difficulties there is a wider area where lockpicking will succeed. On 'Very Easy' locks, you don't even have to change the position, just turn the knob and it will unlock.

Energy Weapons are indeed fairly rare in the beginning, but they become fairly common later on and are great weapons. If you don't want to Tag it because they are rare in the beginning, Tag Energy Weapons and another, like Small Guns if you have to, or just don't tag it at all and raise it more throughout the levels.

You can continue after finishing the game with the Broken Steel DLC, be aware that your actions in the last mission may drastically affect the game.

Melee weapons aren't exactly useless, some weapons can actually be quite good if you put enough skill points in it.

I suggest moving to New Vegas, but if you want to continue, Broken Steel is a must.

I also suggest near-mastering energy weps, lockpicking, science, and speech. With high skills in those, nothing can stop you, without even having to fight much.

*sighs*

This thread made me remember the utter stupidity that is the original Fallout 3 ending.

I think you're 3 years late to beat it.

As others have said get some DLC. Not sure if getting the Game of the Year edition is worth it considering the only good pieces of DLC are Broken Steel and Point Lookout, but you should DEFINITELY get those 2.

Also, don't specialize in energy weapons, they just don't feel good and they're pretty boring to use. They don't explode enemies into a million tiny pieces, or even burn them. You just kind of shoot at people until they magically drop.

Yep - not only can you play on after the game's ending but you get the level cap raised to 30 and a whole new ending with a bunch of Enclave-related missions. It's a blast.

You can either just get the game of the year edition or the Broken Steel add-on, I recommend GOTY as the rest of the DLCs are pretty cool too and it probably costs less than getting them separately.

Well, half of Point Lookout was great. The long story quest part.

I though the PL monsters and baddies were waaaaaaaaaaay overpowered, and having PL installed puts Feral Ghoul Reavers and an extra tough flavor of Super Mutant in DC. Man, I just didn't need that. If PL had scaled its difficulty to that of the Capitol Wasteland I would have enjoyed it a lot more.

Reavers....? Oh you mean those 1000000000000 healthed hell beasts that couldn't be killed? God I hated those. I would make 1.5 hour detours just to avoid a group of them.
