Both my laptop and my wallet are too pathetic to handle Civ5, so here I am. Help a rookie out? It's insanely addictive, but I do get the feeling I'm doing a fair few things wrong. What tips would you give to a total novice? For one, it may well be down to cheating, but the bots seem to be able to produce units at a wildy higher rate than me.

Play on settler until you manage to not get your ass kicked. Build farms and cottages if it suggests a ranch then build that. Build your technology tree fast. Don't start a war you can't decisively win. Always be prepared to be invaded (I never am). Expand but 4-6 cities is about the average number I'd suggest building. I am a noob too and I've never won Civ 4 only Civ 3.

all decent tips for starting off, definitely start on settler or one close to that skill level.

unless you are the aztecs or some other very offensive civ, then DO NOT go to war unless you clearly have enough armies to shear the planet in half, it will probably come back to bite you in the ass. just great wall of china in defense and you won't be stopped, period.

(as mentioned, get 4-5 cities, massive pop growth going, connect them bastards together via roads and then throw everything you can at technology)

Watch out for Gandhi. He may say he's a pacifist but he'll betray you... every time.

Watch out for Montezuma, Shaka, and Genghis Khan. They will attack you at the most inopportune moment.

Do not trust Gandhi. He speaks of peace, but when the armies of India arrive at your doorstep, nukes raining down from the sky, peace will do you no favours.
Otherwise, get yourself into a strong position early on, then do science and research everything. Technology is the key to winning.

I agree with everyone's excellent advice to play on a low skill level to learn the ins and outs. Especially on the lower skill levels, you have the luxury of choosing well in advance what kind of victory you want. A good way to learn the game is to pick the kind of victory you'd like to try then design your Civ around it. By choosing a focus like that, it gives you something around which the other aspects of the game can revolve, which I think makes it easier to learn how all the pieces fit together. Have fun - I lost more hours to Civ 4 than maybe any other game :)

In general, go for population growth in your starter city in the beginning, try to have a city size of at least 3 before pausing growth to make a worker and I'd usually wait till 5 for a settler. Bigger population = more tiles worked = faster production and growth = bigger popn etc. You'll probably have loads of idle time at the start where there aren't many food or production buildings build science buildings in this period. Build a granary as soon as it's available. Don't bother with wonders at the start.
Once you have got farms, pastures etc researched and your food sorted then get on production buildings and improvements, large pop + high production lets you build and churn out units quicker. Metalworking etc are helpful. Once you have a decent main city with good production and pop, then go for science. Always try to keep your science slider as high as possible.

Also, play as England on the map of earth scenario with 18+ civs, seeing as you start on an island you are pretty safe for quite some time, allowing you to get established with 3 cities (2 on the mainland and one in Eire) that have to be invaded by sea.

Lastly, when attacking an enemy city, bring fucktons of seige weapons, ideally enough to reduce their defences to 0 in 2 turns at most. As well as taking out the defebces, take loads of cheap disposable catapults and attack with them first (not ranged bombardment, actually attack), they'll die but they damage up to 5 other enemy units with each attack, meaning your other units will find it a lot easier going when they attack, it's good for dealing with large enemy armies.

You mean the barbarian bots, or the other civs? The barbarians spawn units at random anywhere there's fog of war, posting scouts can help keep em off your ass.

Some basic tips:

Specialize your cities, if you try to do everything you won't be great at anything. I can usually get away with about 1/3rd of my core territory being production cities, and the rest of the core being specialist or commerce.

Siege weapons as sacrificial units. Just throw catapults/cannons into big stacks of enemy units to soften em up for your other units.

Learn your leader bonuses, and play to the strengths they give you, some of them are huge.

You're thinking of 5, and 2. He's a pushover in 4. Justinian you should kill on sight.

Edit: Wait, I haven't played 4 without BetterBTS AI in years, I have no idea.

My tip is to spread your empire asap. Build at least 1 worker and 2 settlers in your capital before any improvements or wonders (the amount of combat units would depend on whether you have barbarians on and how annoying they are being). Try not to expand close to enemy empires (unless you have no choice) because than "our close borders spark tensions" and they might attack you suddenly and if you're unprepared that may cause some issues. Also try to get your own religion asap (for diplomatic and economic reasons), hopefully it will spread to your neighbors. Also, keep on building new cities until the upkeep starts becoming problematic. For some time you may feel it costs more than it gives but over time as cities grow you will reap the benefits and if you are too slow with the expansion the enemies will overwhelm you with empires far larger than yours. Now this is more of a pacifistic approach. You could also take an approach which involves building less of your own cities and instead invest a lot in military to conquer a neighboring empire early on.

If you want lots of detail, here's an extended walkthrough by a guy with lots of single and multi-player Civ IV experience:
http://www.garath.net/Sullla/civ4intro.html

If you like it, be sure to read his multiplayer team game descriptions - lots of interesting tactics and intrigue.

I also recently bought Civ IV! Like a couple months ago. Started a very very long online game with some buds. Had to stop because of exams but we'll be getting back onto it soon.

I started off on settler like these folks suggested but pretty quickly moved up to warlord (I think that's the next one). I need to do some reading though I still basically suck. Haven't cracked noble yet. Also started playing Beyond the Sword, which I find way harder for some reason than standard Civ.

The Me In Team has many CIV4 let's plays on youtube. He plays quickly on high levels, but explains what he does and showcases different strategies.

Otherwise, try to aim for peaceful victory conditions(with wars here and there), as conquering the world takes forever until you've learnt the hotkeys.

Religions are fantastic in Civ IV, if you can found and spread yours to as many folk as possible, then use a great prophet to build their holy city mini-wonder the gold generated can pretty much fund your entire civilization on a larger map. Mysticism is one of the greatest leader traits for the boost it gives you for getting Buddhism or Hinduism first as they tend to be the religions that dominate the world as they're first. If your first starting square isn't a great starting spot for a city, restart. You need to found on turn 1 or be behind the curve. Oh and Alliances are a short cut to wars. The AI loves to fight itself and they'll drag you in with them. If you're going for a pacifist approach I'd recommend just keeping them in the friend zone. Also never renege on your word, the AI never forgets and never forgives.
