I just finished Farcry 3, saying I had a blast is an understatement! However during certain sections of the game I found myself thinking "What is wrong with me?" "That's horrible! Why is it entertaining me?" this feeling was reinforced by the end quote too.

Anyone sharing similar feelings?

Oh, you feel bad about what you did in the game? Try Spec Ops: The Line. It's a recent game, based off of Heart of Darkness (a la, the book that helped inspire the movie "Apocalypse Now"). Trust me, that game will force you to do things, and you will hate yourself for it.

As far as my actions in Far Cry 3, I was never really bothered by anything. I was at killing and skinning the animals a bit at first, but then I realized every single animal on that island is an asshole, and I ended up actually enjoying them. I even learned that they have a phobia of cars and will walk off if you enter one. Any car is also the best way to murder any of those little jackasses.

The main thing that got me about Far Cry 3 was the commentary. I remember when I went to the second island, a lot of the privateers would say things like: "Better pucker up your asshole, boy!" or something along those lines. o_O

Why do loads of games newadays need to be commentaries on things? Like Spec Ops and this, I enjoyed the flamethrowing weed and shooting tigers with arrows more than all that rubbish about character. I play a game for the game, and it seems that Ubisoft made an amazing game and then thought 'well this needs to be about something more than the adventures of some young man saving his friends' which in my opinion was a poor move.

No I didn't feel bad about anything I did in the game. I just enjoyed it and thought it was an awesome game overall. When played on PC with a good set of headphones the immersion is amazing.

Why was it a poor move? Saying you don't like something is one thing, but saying the developers shouldn't have put it in the game implies that you think your opinion is the only one that should be catered to. Personally, Far Cry 3 would have been far less special for me if it had just gone for the generic "shoot people because its fun then be the hero" formula and hadn't tried to be intelligent with its message. Lots of people like me prefer that a game pays attention to its narrative and character development. The actual gameplay in Far Cry 3 wasn't affected by it's attempts to have a unique story, so if you only care about gameplay then why did it bother you?

I think the lineage from Heart of Darkness extends through Apocalypse Now to Spec Ops, I don't think they're separate branches.

OT: Not really. What's more interesting about Far Cry 3 is that the character's clearly enjoying himself as much as I am during the shooting business, not the bloodied hands stuff in-between. And the bloodied hands bits are not, in and of themselves, an overtly enlightening piece of commentary.

What I still don't get is how its supposed to be a 'trip into madness'. Oh and what really pisses me off is the 'skyrim with guns' comment made. There's no way this weak arsed shooter is anything like skyrim, there's no depth or real story to it. Its just go kill pirates at x location or butcher x number animals to make upgrades. Oh yea, why the hell would you need three or four of any animal animal to make a bigger wallet, there's enough leather on say a dog to make several.

Yes EVERYTHING should play like a Micheal Bay movie. Who cares if there's anything deeper than what's on the surface if there's tons of explosions. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go play MW3 because it's BEST GAEM EVA!

Far Cry 3 was enjoyable, but little more after the fact.

As for "why am I doing this, it's horrible", I never really thought that. The pirates were all dicks and hard to take seriously when they all have the same voice actor speaking in that incredibly stupid way. The mercs were just boring mercs.

The only interesting part was Vaas and his insanity speeches, but they never actually took the idea anywhere.

It was entirely forgettable for me, the only reason I'd even go back to it would be to make and play user maps, but the multiplayer is broken and has been since January, so there's not much point.

That is a slippery slope of an argument you are making there. While I loved Spec Ops as much as the next guy I'm not going to deny that the combat leaves a lot to be desired. And its true the amount of games that come out that attempt to have a philosophical commentary but most just end up being pretentious.

OT: I didn't really feel that way by the end of it. I only felt slightly guilty when I was

running around killing the American mercenaries on the second island. But then again they had orders from Hoyt to kill any Natives they encounter.

Other than that, I had no second thoughts about killing anyone else. Characterization for Jason leaves much to be desired, as he is experiencing all of this psychological madness at one point, then having fun while he is burning weed fields with rasta WUBstep in the background the next.

Uh-Oh, we got a fan-boy over here.

OT: Haven't finished it yet, and am enjoying the hell out of the play-through thus far. Between Far Cry 3, Dead Space 3, and Borderlands 2 i have quite a bit to finish

Your encounter with your brother on the second island left me feeling a bit uncomfortable. Not as uncomfortable as beating Andrew Ryan up with a golf club but not far off.

After I'd been playing for a while I was showing my partner how the game played. I was gleefully stealth killing every merc in a compound on the second island and he (a non-gamer) was disgusted with the way the kills went down. I'd barely noticed the amount of blood, but he would visibly wince every time the knife went in. Maybe we are de-sensitised as a group.....

Nope. The best part of the game for me was taking out pirate/privateer outposts, either by raining down hell from far away with my grenade launcher and then picking off the survivors with a sniper rifle, or by taking the up close approach and stealthily murdering with my machete an bow.

Half the time I'd even kill the Rakyat, because fuck those guys. Sit on their hands the whole time I'm clearing out a base, then drive up once it's empty like they own the damn place and tell me my work isn't done.

There are worse things in the world than being desensitised to things that aren't real.

I think I got that feeling more while playing Hotline Miami.
I didn't feel bad about anything, but it really made me think and I noticed a lot of the more subtle ways that they co-related violence, enjoyment and disconnect.

HM was a depiction of madness itself, while FC3 felt like a foray into madness with a bunch of mixed messages placed here and there.

Well, at least you enjoyed it.
I really didn't like the game and when a mate told me Vas dies half way and is replaced with some hick; I just dropped the game and said fuck it, like...3 hours in? something like that.
Sold it to a mate for Skyrim. Best trade ever!

I do think Far Cry 3 did an okay job portraying the whole "losing yourself trying to return to your old life at any cost". It at least made for a somewhat engaging character arc. But yeah, Spec Ops: The Line genuinely hits it out of the park.

And honestly, Far Cry 3 quickly wore out its welcome after Vaas died.
