I've been a huge fan of Resident Evil since the get-go, but I had such a huge issue with RE4, I hated it. I didn't want it to be a behind-the-shoulder camera full 3D game. What I probably wanted at the time was something like the Gamecube remake of the first RE, as well as the Zero prequel.

Coming back to it after a few years, and much, much more experience in similar TPS-based combat, I'm actually loving it. I don't like that after it the things went downhill, especially horror-wise (RE4 was still very atmospheric). RE5 is a fun and completely forgettable co-op experience for me, and I have a feeling that RE6 will be too.

If you play RE4 on PC, you can even enjoy the HD texture packs that some good souls made for the game, and it looks pretty much awesome with those, for an old game. I think it's almost unplayable on the k+m, but the gamepad is the only way to go for me anyway.

Someone mentioned Shinji Mikami. All I can only say that I am REALLY excited about The Evil Within.

In regards to the OPs opinions on RE 4, 5, and 6, I actually enjoyed the first two and completely hated 6.

There's no denying that 6 was something that was approached at completely wrong and is the biggest scorn in the RE franchise.

In terms of RE 4, I believe that it is one of the best modern RE titles out there. I played it on the Wii, so the controls were a lot more refined and aiming was a godsend. It also allowed for exploration, upgrading, managing inventory, and provided interesting puzzles that were never too demanding or difficult. It also still invoked a good degree of fear (look up Regenerators for the hits) and the story worked well within this title.

I'll also agree that RE 5 utilized a lot of similar game mechanics as in RE 4. However, I find it to be a little inferior to its predecessor on different levels. The first is that it is a co-op title; there's nothing wrong with that, but games that are intended to be played as such cannot really work well unless approached in this manner. You definitely need a competent human Player 2 in order to truly enjoy the experience and for many, that can be an eyesore (*cough* Lost Planet 2 *cough, cough*). Your AI controlled partner is one of the worst out there and I don't know too many people that actually went very far with this option. The second is that your inventory is completely limited and managing your gear can be a nightmare; again, if you have a competent Player 2, this isn't an issue, but that damn AI will make you chug a Wiimote at the screen. Finally, the game is very dark and dreary (in terms of the colors and the environment). RE 4's environments were such because it in a mountain setting, cloudy, dark and stormy; so this worked out very well. But how can you make it as such in bright sunny Kijuju, Africa? RE 5 found a way.

In some cases, you can't experience the 'fuss' without playing a game within its release time. Take the old resident evil games... they control like shit, don't let you control the camera, and are blocky and REALLY pixelated.

At the time, those downsides weren't downsides... they were normal for the generation. These days we've experienced better, improved versions... and its hard to experience the 'fuss' of an old game for the first time... if the game is old.

Not saying its impossible, not saying you can't. Just saying its not very likely....

There's a reason why RE4 is getting milked with remakes. It's just so mechanically flawless.
Say what you will about it's story and it's ditching of the cool tank controls+REclassics camera style, the over the shoulder view felt very pioneered by RE4, one of the biggest "WOW this is new AND good" moments in gaming. I was one of those dumb idiot nerd kids who had a gamecube and no cool kid PS2s, so getting RE4 was like a gift sent from the heavens and then some. When people say it killed the RE franchise's horror aspect, that's BS. Mikami knew balance, thats why we have such tense scenarios like the first bug encounter, the regenerators, and the U3 fight on top of feel good gunplay. Yeah it's a nostalgia drive that gets me loving it, but it's just because the game is so solid by it's own standards. Can't tie nostalgia to something that's rich with polish.

Which is why I and many others found RE5 dull (kinda lost sight of the fun atmosphere, and nothing but the Wesker fight was memorable). I played the whole game co-op with my cousin then we never touched it again. If I ever return to it, it'll have to be for the co-op. It feels so unplayable solo.

RE6... played the demo, hated it. Played the full game... went back to RE4... and yeah my verdict was I hated it.

So I just finished RE4 for the first time, the only other RE game that I've finished is 5 ages ago.

It was....pretty good, can't complain, nothing wrong with it, had a good time playing it but its nothing great either. All I ever heard about this game before playing it was how its the best in the series and that 5 and 6 just fail in comparison, so I guess I just expected more then I got.
I mean, I didn't like 6 and understand why others didn't, but I enjoyed 5 and don't understand why others didn't. Both 4 and 5 are fully aware how dumb they are, the game mechanics are practically the same.

So that's one question, the other is how much do you think Nostalgia effects your opinion on a game? There is some old games that I can pick up and play anytime because I have good memories of it so I don't mind the lower standard, though for people who haven't played those games before might not be able. In my case RE4 was certainly enjoyable, will probably do another playthrough but without nostalgia to help it I suppose I was just underwhelmed and don't find the game to be as special as others think so.

Anyway....off to try out Silent hill 2, lets see what all the fuss is about that game...
The difference is you're comparing an older game with your current experiences and level of games, which can alter your perception. Play some of the older Resident Evils and compare them to RE4 mechanics-wise and you'll see why many people love this game.

RE4 Was amazing and so was RE5 In my view, they both had me gripped and terrified in equal measures. Even Ashley and Shiva didn't make me hate the game. Might be nostalgia but they're both in my top 10 games.

I played Resident Evil 4 only last year and I was very impressed by it. I think it's aged quite well personally though I do have issue with the inconsistent tone. I love the big, sprawling castle levels and what not but it just seems so out of place considering the mine cart section and the ridiculous character interactions. Oh well.

Silent Hill 2 (and I'd argue Silent Hill 3 does, as well) has aged quite well. The models are impressive given it's an early era PS2 game and character interaction is amazing. I prefer SH3's gameplay myself but at least SH2 is functional.
