It's called A Fault in Our Stars by John Green. Some of you may have heard of it, and some of you may not. If you want a book grounded firmly in real life, go for it. Or don't. That's not why I'm here.

I've read a lot of books, seen a lot of films and shows. Played a lot of games. No piece of media has ever made me cry, though I have felt very emotional towards them. I could say this is the first book (or piece of media in general) that has ever made me cry. That wouldn't quite be true. 'Crying' implies I made some sort of sound. I stayed quiet, because I didn't want to break the moment. So I'll say it's the first book that has ever made me shed a tear.

I don't know if that's a confession or an endorsement, but there you go.

For added discussion value, what was the first piece of media to make you shed tears? Or what caused the most emotional response in general, be it a physical or internal one?

If you didn't cry at the beginning of UP, you have a black void where your heart should be.

I couldn't say which was the first book to make me cry. I don't remember the title. It was an indirect cry, though. One of my favorite characters had died, and I felt off about it the rest of the day. That night, as I was laying in my bed, was the first time I really understood what "dead" meant. And that was when I started crying.

The ending to "stranger in a strange land" moves me in ways i cannot convey, same as the ending to "one flew over the cuckoos nest", book and film.

The green mile.

It's the only piece of media that has made me cry.

Honourable mention goes to the walking dead game for making me care about the characters.

I'll admit it triggered emotional response, but I didn't cry. Oh well, back to being a heartless **** apparently :D

I can top that; I didn't feel much towards it. Despicable Me, I know >.>

OT: Recently, the Walking Dead made me feel a bit distraught, but no tears shed (yet, at least...)

I have one, but mentioning that it's sad in the end is in itself a spoiler:

Curse you, Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog. No fair warning or anything. Just manly tears.

I think that instead of Captchas, the Escapist should just play that whole montage and ask "Did you feel sadness?". It would prove much more effective against bots.

"Untouchable" by Scott O'Connor.

Seriously. This book is gut wrenching. By the first few pages, I already felt bad. The first fifty, I wanted to cry.

It's an amazing read. If you're wanting read about bullying and, well, I won't spoil it. This is it. If you're looking to get those waterworks going, this did it for me.

I normally don't read much out of sci-fi/fantasy, but occasionally I venture out. I was at the local bookstore and as I walked by, this book fell off the shelf in front of me. I winged it, took it as a sign and bought it. I had no idea what I was in store for. This is the only book that has ever made me that emotional, let alone get those tears running.

Just trust me. "Up" didn't make me cry one bit :p This did. Take that as a sign.

It was Heinlein for me, too, but with Have Spacesuit, Will Travel, back in fifth grade.

I've never straight cried at any kind of media, though I've teared up on quite a few things. Probably the most random was this piece [http://www.historynet.com/perspectives-stalingrad-foes-meet-again-november-97-world-war-ii-feature.htm] about former Russian and German soliders meeting by chance in Volvograd (former Stalingrad) and talking about the battle.

On the beach.
Everybody dies, but there is no looting, not raping and pillaging, the population of Australia remains polite and dignified all the way to the end and the book points out that that does no fucking good. By the last scenes, as all the characters simply look for a place and time to die, I was having to read it in small chunks and take a large break between each paragraph.

OT: I remember having a lump in my throat for the first time because of a movie at the end of Return of the King. Possibly partly because my sister was crying for like the whole last 15 minutes right next to me. I can't remember if I shed a tear or not.

Errr... does accidentally erasing pokemon saves count? Because when my pokemon Crystal was new, I accidentally erased my whole first save. I was like 9 years old and I remember crying because of that.

Movies that made me teary-eyed:
- Iron Giant, that 'Superman' part near the end.
- Green Mile
- Most Pixar movies
- Saving Private Ryan

There are also quite a number of books that made me shed a tear. Can't remember them, though. Too much to list.

However, the one piece of media that had a surprising and the most intense amount of emotional impact on me so far was ( this is quite embarrassing for me to type and don't judge me) Katawa Shoujo. It's a Visual Novel/Game of sorts, where you get to choose your response to certain things that happen; like those Choose-your-own-adventure books. Depending on your choices, you end up bonding with different girls that each have their own disabilities (e.g, one is blind, another's mute and deaf, etc.)

The reason it affected me greatly was because of a bad ending of certain badly-scarred(both emotionally and physically) girl in the game. It reminded me too much of someone who used to be very close to me. The build-up of tension, how she just exploded in anger and the reasons of why she did was eerily similar. I was shaking when the scene played through. After the credits, I shut down my laptop and curled up on the ground.

I cried like a *****.

Well, I didn't cry, but I literally felt as if I'd been punched in the stomach in The Amber Spylgass when

Will & Lyra discovered they'd never see each other again. I can remember it quite clearly, being only a kid - 13 at the time - and thinking "What? No! This isn't how it ends! There's supposed to be a happy ending! Where's the happy ending?!

I probably cried at Watership Down too, but that's because my parents were inattentive one day and I happened to watch it on TV despite being very young. Holy fuck, that's a terrifying film for a little kid. You think it's going to be all fluffy bunnies and adventure, and suddenly it's horror and blood and death and....yeah. I may have cried, or I may have just sat and stared silently at the wall for a while, unable to process how fucked-up what I'd just witnessed was.

The first one? That's easy.

Everyone of my age cried at this. If they didn't, they are pod people and should be pre-emptively destroyed.

Later on, the beginning of UP was quite moving. Interesting that I tend to have stronger emotional reactions to cartoons than live-action stuff.
