I got a huge lump in my throat at the end of Les Miserables, basically from

When the little kid dies and the barricade falls, up until the end at the huge barricade of all the people who died.

The Lion King was probably the first time, but way after I saw it the first time, I was just a little too young to understand what was going on when his dad died the first time I saw it.

Also, side note, I love John Green, but not from his books. I found his Crash Course series, and I think I learned more about World History from that show then I did during the entire year of World History in school.

A Fault in Our Stars... I remembered I preordered the book two summers ago.
And then Barnes and Nobles decided it wasn't going to ship, still charge me the $35 user fee (When all I had done with B&N was to order the book), and then tell me they were going to ship in January of 2013 (I found this out in December). I cancelled my order and should probably cancel my account, but my parents are urging me to call them to get the $35 back, even though I signed up for the subscription service, yadda yadda, legal talk...

I know people don't like to bring up the 4chan, but there are sometimes /b/awww threads, where people post their inside secrets that they've never the courage to speak, or the sadness in their life. Its a sobering experience, ones that have made me cry many a time. Its when we break away from the cynicism and cruelty of our daily lives to take condolence in the fact that we are alone, but we are not--that someone, just like us, feels our pain. It cleans our guilt, and allows recovery. And thus, the healing takes place.

I have heard of this book and have listened to John Green on youtube. I really want to read this book and you have only heightened my desire. The fact that you cried interests me greatly, I long for experiences that I can just absorb myself in and let them leave me emotionally wiped.

Not sure if a novel has ever made me cry actually, films can get me pretty good though. I just think I haven't read enough yet, something I plan on working on.

Voices of a Distant Star usually leaves me with a bit of a tear welling in each eye.

When we watched it in the anime club I used to go to I don't think anyone cried, but we were depressed as all heck.
If people are looking for an anime with an emotional impact, it is definitely pretty high on the list.

My pick is more depressing than sad, but The Wall made me feel rather down about myself. I'm talking about the Pink Floyd album here. I'm not going to spoil anything, listen to it yourself! It's worth your time, guys, trust me.

For something sad, I'll take the end of Scenes of a Memory by Dream Theater. I'm not spoiling that either. That kicked me in my stomach rather hard in the end.

Had to think really hard about what the first one was...I'm old so I had to think back to when the world
was in black & white....
But I think there was some version of Peter Pan (couldn't have been the Disney version) in which Tinkerbell
actually stayed dead after drinking the poison so Peter couldn't....Maybe I'm mis-remembering and it was
the Disney version & I just thought she was really permanently dead...

The biggest one though, probably from the anime Air, you know, this line

As far as books go the first one that made me cry was Dragons of Winter Night.

Flint's death. He survived battle with countless hordes of the Dragon Queen's Army and instead dies peacefully of a heart attack. His age finally caught up with him.

Video games never really got to me this way until recently. Mass Effect 3 finally got me twice though.

The first piece of media I remember making me cry at all was the movie La Bamba. I don't remember if I cried when La Bambi's mom died, but I do remember that one.

I can list on one hand the things that have made me cry.

Fox and the Hound, seriously I just cannot watch this film because of that one scene, where the lady is driving the fox away (and I can't even remember what on earth else happens in this film).

Toy Story 3 - Just that look that Jessie/Buzz/Woody share and then they all join hands and GAH I can feel tears just thinking about it! I cried from that point until well after the credits finished.

^Those two have a personal connection to me cos of things that happened in my life at the time I first saw them that I felt were similar to what I was going through/been through recently.

Les Miserables - Good God is that one depressing film.

The Muppets - Ah now these were good tears. Tears of nostalgia and happiness, as well as being a bit sad (during Pictures in my Head)

And things that got to me without making me cry:

Wall-E - not when he's being crushed, but when EVE thinks she's fixed him and he doesn't remember who he is. Just argh... the emotion on her face. I didn't personally cry, but there were a lot of manly tears from all the grit floating around in that cinema screen.

UP - The beginning.

Mass Effect 3 - Mordin & Legion. My two favourite characters.

I can say I've never actually cried whilst reading a book, although my eyes have watered and I've come close, so whether that's a good or bad thing I don't know. I personally found Harry staring at the Mirror of Erised to be the saddest part of the Harry Potter series, just because of how evident it is how much Harry misses his parents'. The other time for me was the end of Ender's Game, I was like fuck ... they did what? If you've read it then you'll know what I mean.

I cried heart wrenching sobs as a kid when Bambi's mum died, same with Mustafa.

I have teared up over a lot of stuff, so I will just give a few examples. The song "Watching Over Me" from Iced Earth. I heard them play it live when I went to see them, and I did start to cry during the song, as it reminded me a lot of my best friend that had committed suicide.


I teared up at the end of The Dark Knight Rises too. The book The Road didn't make me cry, but did make me sit in silence for a long time, rereading a certain, awful line. I have also cried while reading many Drizzt books.

I can't think of any games that made me cry or anything like that, but there have certainly been games with a very profound effect on me (Dear Esther comes to mind).
