Don't forget PS1 games. You could play all of the Legacy Of Kain Games including the (albeit rarish) PS1 titles.

Shin megami tensei games have been reccomended already. But what about Digital Devil Saga? It's a brilliant and very original Sci-Fi setting. If you're into wierd interesting and "out there" Science fiction that isn't cleanly distinguishable from fantasy, then consider it!

...but don't really know of any kick-ass games for it. I know of a few, which I'm planning on getting as soon as humanly possible.

But I'm genuinely very uneducated about the truly great titles of this console, so can anyone recommend any?

I feel I should point out for the sake of me not getting swamped to death with suggestions for them, I'm already planning on getting Ico, Shadow of the Collosus and Silent Hill 2.
Question.

What genres do you prefer?

I mean, one could suggest the best game of its genre, but if you don't like the genre.. Well it's still gonna suck, isn't it?
My main genre is fantasy RPG type games, hands down. I'm also a big fan of the insane, over-the-top action game or the insane over-the-top shooting game, so they'd work for me too.

I like stealth-based games too, even given my general lack of skill at them. Oh, and I like me some horror despite being very easily scared.

Don't let all the hype around Silent Hill 2 let make you ignore Silent Hill 3. I hate it how SH3 has been undeservedly left in the shadow of its predecessor.

I also have to repeat Metal Gear Solid 3, Subsistence version if you can get it for a fair price (here in Europe people ask insane amounts for it). Possibly the best game I've ever played, and I still cry at night for what the series turned into after it. Good thing it can be played as a stand-alone story.

Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition is pretty sick, too.

Also, Prince of Persia, the whole trilogy. Each game has their own little strenghts over each other, so at least I think the whole series is well worth it.

Ooh, ooh!
You need to try and get every spyro game in exsistence (apart from anyone over the 4th)
And the Rachet's and Clank's.
Those games FORMED my childhood game experience!

Metal Gear Solid 3 was the only reason I bought a PS2..and then I got a ton of other games after...

Don't get Snake Eater, the camera is still the old school MGS style, get Subsistence, it has the old school camera as an option, but mainly you will use the modern third person camera, not to mention all the really awesome bonus content.

PS2 is pretty much the golden age of Playstation.... there are way too many good titles to list but one that got missed is the one I originally bought my PS2 for, and that was Twisted Metal Black.

Champions of Norrath, good hack and slash rpg, very similar to baldurs gate
Hell yes... I've been trying to find a good 'replacement' for this on the latest gen systems and there's nothing out there that has this level of hack and slash, customization and depth all while remaining LOCAL 4 player co-op.

spider-man 2
prince of persia sands of time
god of war 1 and 2
jak and daxter trilogy
marvel vs. capcom 2
resident evil 4
dead or alive 2
timesplitters
ratchet and clank
capcom vs. snk 2
soulcalibur 2
and even though it's got a steep learning curve, tenchu wrath of heaven is pretty damn good (the versus especially when you get used to it)
also shinobi

I think that's it

I've seen GTA: San Andreas and Star Wars Battlefront 2 mentioned, both of which took up massive amounts of my childhood. I'd also suggest trying out the other GTA games as well as the older Tony Hawks games - American Wasteland is epic.

Since you mentioned Silent Hill 2, on the same genre I'd also recommend Fatal Frame 2 and 3 and Clock Tower 3.

Owning a PS2 without Persona 4 should also be punishable by law.

If you don't already own a PS3 so you can get the HD remakes, do get God Of War 1-2 and Prince Of Persian: Sands Of Time.

That's only a couple, impossible to make a complete list really, the games on PS2 that are great and/or worth getting are more than 100.

There are a lot of good games on the Playstation 2. Other titles to consider could be:

Rule of rose, Clocktower 3, Silent Hill 3, Persona 3: FES, Persona 4, Silent Hill 4: The room, Resident Evil 4, Fatal frame, Okami, Devil summoner, Kingdom hearts 1 and 2 and Gregory horror show. They are the ones I can think of from the top of my head, if more come to mind then I will post some more.

Too bad. PS has always been weak on RPG. I'm a mad RPG fan too, but I find consoles are weak as a rule for the RPGs anyway. I use my console for "lite gaming" and do my role playing on PC.

Shadow of the colossus is a fighting game, but it has an RPG feel. There are some FF and Dragon Quest games but I don't care for JRPG. There's two hack and slash Baldur's Gate titles. The GTA games and their clones; Gun, Godfather etc; have an open world RPG feel also.

For RPG I say use your PC. Neverwinter Nights has enough fan modules and an active online community. That title alone could keep you role playing for YEARS and it runs great even on low-end PCs. NWN2 is good too. Oblivion and Morrowind are awesome. Baldur's Gate 1&2, Planescape, Fallout... I could go on for hours...
Please tell me this is a joke. Ps2 not being an rpg console? The ps2 was like the jrpg king of any generation and any platform. The ps2 was the rpg lovers dream console. check out this list. http://www.gamespot.com/games.html?platform=7&category=Role-Playing&mode=all&sort=score&dlx_type=all&sortdir=asc&official=all

And to OP. Lord of the rings: the Third age, Odin Spheres, and Tales of Symphonia
