Jeez, no racing fans anywhere in this topic. Anyway, Burnout 3 Takedown. Best arcade racer on the system, even better than GT. You will get your money's worth cause the game is freaking huge.

Another game that lasts is RE4. Scary, funny, campy in a good way, creepy and totally replayable.

...but don't really know of any kick-ass games for it. I know of a few, which I'm planning on getting as soon as humanly possible.

But I'm genuinely very uneducated about the truly great titles of this console, so can anyone recommend any?

I feel I should point out for the sake of me not getting swamped to death with suggestions for them, I'm already planning on getting Ico, Shadow of the Collosus and Silent Hill 2.

I concur, THE absolute best game in the series by far.
You know what's better than Metal Gear Solid?
More Metal Gear Solid! Get the Essential Collection.

Final Fantasy X, AND X-2! Yes, I am serious there, it is genuinely a good game once you get past the changes to Yuna's characterisation.

Also, get Alter Echo, Warhammer 40K Fire Warrior, the old Crash Bandicoot/Spyro games for PS1, and any and all Sly Cooper/Jak and Daxter/Ratchet and Clank games. You can't go wrong with any of those :D.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King is one of my favourite games ever. It has a great, albiet cliche, story that will keep you hooked and extremely lovable characters PLAY IT!

All of the Ratchet & Clank games on there, except Deadlocked, all Jak & Dexter games, Star Wars battlefront series, and last but certainly not least, the Kingdom Hearts series.

Pirates: The Legend of Black Kat

Pirate adventure game with tons of stuff to do. Great if you like exploration.
really? The well endowed pirate lady on the front always put me off getting that. Never trust a game that tries to sell on sex appeal alone, but if you really think it's good, I might try it.

Anyway, here's my picks.

Urban chaos riot response
Area 51
Star wars battlefront 1/2
Destroy all humans (original is best)
Gun
Spartan total warrior
Black
Wipeout fusion
Ssx series (3 might be the best, but tricky is easier to pick up and play.)
The suffering: prison is hell (i think it's just called the suffering in some countries) and ties that bind.

Hitman series is a must. There's just nothing else like it.

GTA Vice City is probably the highlight of the PS2 era.

Have you played Deus Ex before? If not, it's on the PS2.

Any Burnout game.

You cannot go wrong with any of the SSX series on PS2, even if you don't like snowboarding. They ranged from great to amazing.

ALL of the PS2 Need For Speed games were great.

PS2 is so amazing. Get Battlefront 1&2. And if you have time, try the Jak and Daxter series. God of War was always awesome. I regrettably never played them, but I've heard good things about Sly Cooper, Psychonauts, and Ratchet and Clank (yes, yes, I know, I'm a horrible person - I'll get them this summer!).

Oh my God, I'm so jealous!

OK. Behave. Behave! Okay!

Where were we? Yes...

You just bought yourself a platform from probably THE BEST period to own a home console, regardless of which one it is. So don't forget those multi-platform releases, if you haven't already played them. Splinter Cell 2 and 3 are fantastic, as are all 3 Prince of Persia: Sands of Time games. Also, don't forget Metal Gear Solid 3.

Definantly look into dark cloud and dark cloud 2 (or dark chronicle depending on where you live) They tried something unique and it works.

They are zelda-ish games with 2 main parts: clean out dungeons and build towns. You can buy/get the items you need for dungeoncrawling in the towns you build and you find new buildings, trees, rivers, inhabitants,... in the dungeons. It's a fun system.

Other than that I can confirm most suggestions so far.

Sometimes I wonder why the ps3 doesn't get any love from me. Than I take a look at the ps3 games list and the ps2 games list and I'm like "Oh yeah, that's why."

Ok then, I'm going to recommend games that NOBODY has Ninja'd yet.

Spiderman 2- probably the best game off of a movie ever.

Getaway 1-2- If you are english.

Simpsons: hit and run- great game even if you're not a fan, but it would help.

XIII- not related to FF. It is a surprisingly good 1st-person shooter with comic-style elements. Although, don't expect a sequel anytime soon. Oh and multiplayer is awesome.

Destroy All Humans 1-2- Very humorous and addictive.

Sakura Wars: So long my love- pretty rare but very good if you like your heartstrings tugged on. A must if you like sim-date games with Gundam-like armor suits and cliche anime antics.

Valkyria Chronicles- Pretty good story-wise and comes pretty close to talking about concentration camps. Also, heartstring tugging.

I know someone mentioned this but it has to be said again.
Shadowhearts- I just want more people to support this game because it is very rare in availability and story-wise. A very nice juxtaposition of Horror elements with quirky anime styles.

God of War. Definetly. Great if you're anyone.

Or, try Gregory Horror Show: The Soul Collector.

It's based on a hit anime where everyone is, well... a box. One of the best underrated games of all times. And, if you play it to the ending, get your tissues ready. Great if you like panicky, adventure/puzzle games were you have no means of self-defense full of interesting characters who'll try to kill you with every chance they get.

Try Persona if you like JRPGs.

Try Killer7 if you like action-adventure or shooter-action games.

Try Prince of Persia: Sands of Time if you like platformers.

Or Call of Duty if you like series that started out OK and went shit fast (but we already have Resident Evil for that-- oh, and Resident Evil 4.)

And, that's it. I guess I'll be one my way.

Do you own a PS3?

If so, don't touch Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Sly, or God of War. All of them you can find on the PS3 except the first two in collections, which are being released some time in the future.

As for games:
Okami
Fatal Frame(Project Zero in Europe and Australia) 1-3
Final Fantasy 10, 10-2, and 12
Oni
Persona 3&4
GTA San Andreas and Vice City
Metal Gear Solid 3
Freedom Fighter
Resident Evil 4
Starwars Battlefront 2
Silent Hill 2-4
Devil May Cry
Splinter Cell 1 & Chaos Theory
Kingdom Hearts
Disgaea
Ratchet and Clank
Jak and Daxter
