...but don't really know of any kick-ass games for it. I know of a few, which I'm planning on getting as soon as humanly possible.

But I'm genuinely very uneducated about the truly great titles of this console, so can anyone recommend any?

I feel I should point out for the sake of me not getting swamped to death with suggestions for them, I'm already planning on getting Ico, Shadow of the Collosus and Silent Hill 2.
FFX if you are starved for a cheap laugh. I liked the game, but damn, only one twist was a shock.
It was also reeeeealllly stupid at times.

Congratulations on buying the finest console that ever has been or will be made. Might I suggest Syphon Filter: Omega Strain? Easily the best overall of the entire. series, IMO

Ratchet and clank: up your arsenal
Champions of Norath (get a multitap)
Champions: return to arms

the Champion's games are very similar to baldur's gate but in the everquest realm with more races/classes a way better inventory system 4 player co-op(i believe dark alliance has this also but I know the xbox version of the first baldur's gate does not)
sly cooper(And the thievious nocturnes?)
Sly 2:Band of thieves
Sly 3: honor among thieve's
metal gear solid collection(there is a collection edition with the first 3)
splinter cell(if you like stealth but is kinda tough)
sonic mega collection(the good sonic games
dark cloud
dark cloud 2(way better then first one)

there may be more but i can not think of any more right now besides

Hitman(is it for ps2?)

EDIT: fixed typos

If you liked Final Fantasy VII, then I recommend Dirge of Cerberus. Great follow up that takes a Devil May Cry approach to action, with rpg elements.

The Dragonball Z Budokai and Tenkaichi Budokai games are good fun too, though I'm a bit of a biased person to recommend those in all honesty. If you like Dragonball, and you like fighting games, try them. Budokai 3 and Tenkaichi 3 I most definitely recommend.

The Kingdom Hearts games are must plays. The juxtaposition of Square-Enix characters/environments in a slightly angsty narrative, combined with the happy feel good (and yet still dramatic) Disney worlds, along with a good solid action RPG battle system, make for an extremely epic experience.

Metal Gear Solid 3 is an absolute must. As much as I love Sons of Liberty, it doesn't even compare to Snake Eater. I wont spoil the story for you, but in regards to gameplay the camouflage system really adds to the stealth gameplay, just try it!

If you see SEGA Classics Collection about then it's worth getting. It includes fun remakes of Golden Axe, Outrun, Space Harrier, Virtua Racing, and more, all with enhanced graphics. Worth a play.

No Playstation library is complete without a Wipeout game. Wipeout Fusion... get it.

I'll leave a list of some more, can't elaborate without going overboard on the length of the post.

Timesplitters trilogy, Tekken Tag/4/5, Mortal Kombat Armageddon, Gitaroo Man, Jak trilogy, Devil May Cry, Soul Calibur II/III, Zone of the Enders 1/2, WWE Crush Hour, Gran Turismo 4.

a better question would have been which games to avoid. ps2 had a fuckin awesome lineup of great games

Persona 3: FES, Persona 4, .hack//Infection, Mutation, Outbreak, and Quarantine (A 4-part series. But good like finding any of the .hacks at all.) God of War. And if you want some good multiplayer, Arcana Heart. Mobile Suit Gundam: Federation vs. Zeon.

Soul Calibur 3 was a great exclusive on the system... of course... nobody plays that anymore.
I do, or rather I do with a friend. Soul Calibur 4 just broke too much so on the rare times he visits we always boot up 3.
Well that's good to hear. I always thought it was pretty neat they even released an arcade edition patch for the game. And "broke too much"?
Yeah the removal of move buffering shattered the flow of the game and made it much more "by the numbers" The first 3 had input buffering so why did they remove it. Of course for anyone who didn't use it then 4 will be ok.

Get Star Wars Battlefront and Star Wars Battlefront II. They aren't technobabel and they are pretty fun to play.

Also, if you are in for an obscure giant robot game, try RAD: Robotic Alchemic Drive. It has original controls and a half-decent story.

Manhunt is good for MATURE audiences, but it is really, really fun. Not only do you get to stab redneck biggots in the eye with glass, but you also get decent graphics and interesting sneak-in-the-shadows gameplay.

Sims 2 is for casual gamers mostly, but it is a good port of the PC favorite. It doesn't have alot of the things that the PC version has, like children or birth, but it has relations, character creation, and so on. You can build a one story house and enjoy blocking your characters into walls and watch them turn to ghosts.

Mercenaries Playground of Destruction is better than the sequel, and it is one of the best GTA clones ever. Honestly, get it and see how cool it can be. It even has cool cheat codes like a Han Solo and Indiana Jones costume cheat!

This is likely the best time to get a PS2 from a market perspective because it is the cheapest it has ever been to buy games and system hardware. Gamestop is full of the best titles and reviews exist for nearly every game so that research can be done. If you ever feel any sort of question rise about a game, you can just go to Youtube and watch reviews.

And if you don't have a Gamecube then you should get Resident Evil 4.
I hadn't thought of this. Maybe it's time I braved that game again after my utter puss-out the first time I attempted it.
For the love of god don't play the ones before 4 then! Resident evil 4 is a joke in terms of horror compared to the previous 3.

I dare you to play resident evil 3 and not shit yourself the first time you hear "STARS!".

Ratchet and clank games and Timesplitter series. There's also a now fairly rare game called Roadtrip Adventure, that was a really unique, interesting experience.

Don't forget PS1 games. You could play all of the Legacy Of Kain Games including the (albeit rarish) PS1 titles.

Shin megami tensei games have been reccomended already. But what about Digital Devil Saga? It's a brilliant and very original Sci-Fi setting. If you're into wierd interesting and "out there" Science fiction that isn't cleanly distinguishable from fantasy, then consider it!

The Thing I love most about PS2 is the compatability with PS1, DVD, and CD's... ah... the already vast library of the PS2 added with the huge library of classic PS1 titles... I only wish that the bloody PS3 played PS2 games. THat's the one and only reason I don't purchase that thing.
