As a beginner, don't worry about tiers, especially if you're not even sure you'll be totally getting into the game. Seriously.

Tiers do exist, absolutely, but they really only mean something when you're playing at a higher level of play. Your first goal should be A.) picking characters you actually like and B.) picking characters that function well as a team. You'll pretty quickly find that having a team with good synergy is just as, if not more, important than having characters that are "strong" individually.

That said, if there is one character I would avoid playing as a newcomer to game, it's Phoenix/Jean Gray. She can be a very powerful character in the right hands, but because of how she works she forces your whole team to play differently than it would otherwise. If you're not aware, if she dies while you have 5 super bars stocked up then she turns into Dark Phoenix; a super powered version of herself that has been weakened in UMvC3 but can still fairly easily destroy pretty much anyone. The problem with this is that you start playing to build 5 bars and then not use them, which is pretty much the opposite of what you do with any other character/team. Also, because she can be so powerful, using her can become a crutch that hurts how well you learn to play the rest of your team. Even at the pro level, there are (or were in vanilla at least) a decent number of Phoenix players out there but very few of even the pros could win matches without having to consistently rely on Dark Phoenix comebacks.

Anyway, if you're looking to learn I would heartily suggest going to shoryuken.com. They have a great MvC3 guide there, extremely deep character forums, and multiple daily links to videos of tutorials and new stuff that's being discovered. Just don't bother actually trying to participate in their comments/forums as many of the regular users tend to the elitist jackass end of things.

In short, pick who you like instead of who's "strong," spend lots of time in training mode, and go to shoryuken.com once you've settled in a bit and want to dig into real information.

So despite swearing off all games thats weren't rpgs , my friend bought me the game so we could play together . Having no choice and being mildly competitive i have to play it , i might or might not like it , but that is to be scene . I haven't played a fightinggame since Mortal kombat trilogy for the N64.

My question is , any tips for this game? What do i avoid? What are the OP characters and the bottom tier characters? Whos you favorite characters. What do i need to know going into this .

Also should i buy an arcade stick for this game?Do any of you have an arcade stick?

Any information at all will be usefull really, i want to give this game a fair chance , maybe even Play competetively if i really like it ( always wanted to be a tournyfag).

PS: i got it for the xbox360
Don't listen to these hyper-competitive pros. You're a beginner. You are buying games to have fun, not to settle serious arguments or win tournaments for cash prizes or get the best online rank.
Just play it, choose whoever and have fun with it, man. That's the best advice I can give you. Don't give a damn about win or lose; just have a good time.
As a beginner it takes a lot of getting used to just to understand the mechanics behind fighting. Everyone here is going off on a ton of specific stuff you and I both don't know a thing about. You don't need to bother yourself with who's the best and worst character and what combos are the greatest. You're only submitting to the desire to be the best, which is always one of the better ways to NOT enjoy a game as much as you could.
Just let it go, play the game, don't worry about an arcade stick unless the regular controller isn't doing it for you, and find your own way. By asking others for help, it's like reading the wiki for Minecraft all the way through before playing. You skip right past the having fun part and into the serious business portion. If that's what you really want... I guess I can see why you'd purposely limit yourself to only playing RPGs, then...

Wesker, Vergil, and Dormammu are pretty godlike. Wesker especially. He's fast, does a crapton of damage, and has great mixups.

Characters to avoid? Tron and She-Hulk are terrible. There's probably a few others that are just not good, but those are the ones that stand out.
According to pro fighters, all the ones you picked are bottom tier while Tron and She-Hulk are more valuable.

Really good teams usually have: Sentinel, Deadpool, Zero, Magneto, Strider, Hagger, and one other than currently escapes me.

Oh and like others have said, get yourself an arcade stick.

All I ask is that you don't become yet another one of the six million 'dante, deadpool, and ryu' people.
So tired of that.

I was surprised at how much I DIDN'T like the new characters I thought I would like and vise-versa. Nemesis, Vergil, and Ghost Rider in particular are pretty awesome (not together though). I thought Dr. Strange was going to be someone i enjoyed (since i like modok) but he's just not doing it for me.

Hell, all I have is vanilla.
My main three seem to be Viewtiful Joe, Iron Man, and Felicia.
I don't know why, but they just seem to work for me =/

I'm not sure who you've been listening to, but according to THE BEST 2 PLAYERS IN THE WORLD (JWong and Combofiend) say Wesker is far and away the best character in the game. Vergil is like a simpler Dante, and Dante's only weakness in MvC3 was input errors because he had 900 moves. Dormammu was always mid-upper tier, and now he's gotten buffed. His BNBs do a hell of a lot of damage, and his Run super is still amazing.

Tron and She-Hulk both got heavy nerfs, and they weren't particularly amazing even in vanilla. They made good showings because Tron had ToD combos and an incredible assist. She-Hulk worked very well with the right team, but not because she herself was an outstanding character.
