1,2, 5, and 6 are also available as PSX ports. I highly recommend these titles as well, especially 6.

5's pretty good as well, 2 is a bit weird and 1 is badly showing its age though.

I just finished VIII again recently. To make the final boss a challenge I fought it solo with Quistis.

But anyway, you want advice?

Save time on sitting there for hours drawing spells, Learn the refine magic skills from your GFs.

Also, get your GFs to learn the Junction slots early as well, so you can junction more things to your characters.

Have all your GF's learn "Boost" as soon as possible. During their animations hold SELECT and tap the square button when the little hand in the bottom corner doesn't have an X over it. Try to get the number next to the hand as high as possible as this will multiply the GF's damage considerably.

Don't bother junctioning any spells to Squall's Hit stat. He has a natural 255% hit rate. Meaning that he NEVER EVER MISSES, even when he's Blind! Focus on his Strength and Speed stats instead.

Zell's limit break is broken as hell. Alternate doing "Punch Rush" and "Booya!" as fast as you possibly can FOR MASSIVE DAMAGE. =P He can One-shot nearly anything this way.

Rinoa's second limit break only casts attack spells she has in her inventory. But doesn't deplete those spells. So load her up with only high level spells (Meteor, Ultima) and watch her annihilate!

Junctioning 100 "Pain" spells to ST-ATK will Blind, Silence, AND Poison any enemy that is not 100% immune to those statuses. This renders a most enemies completely harmless. (Some bosses too!)

Use Draw on ALL the bosses. You can miss out on some of the best GF's and magic if you don't.

There are hidden Draw points all over the overworld map. Just press X a lot while running around to find them.

Use your GF's item conversion abilities to get high level spells early.

Diabolo's ENC-NONE ability is great! There are no Random Battles when it's set.

EDIT: Now that I look back at OP I realize this is exactly the kind of stuff he wanted to avoid... Oops..

For Final Fantasy VIII, try not to grind levels too, too much. It's really, REALLY easy to become an unkillable God-Child with a lot less grinding than compared to any other Final Fantasy title. That's about all I can think of. Final Fantasy IX is a ton of fun by the way and, good luck getting Excaliber 2. Also good luck beating Ozma.

I just want to clarify something here... you do know that the final battle with Sephiroth is supposed to be a one hit KO right? :p

If you were nailing through the game with a guide though Im not surprised you came to the end OP - becoming OP is a prize for playing the game full to its 100% completion, the way I see it.

If you value your time/sanity, don't bother trying to 100% FF VIII. Its the most massive pointless waste of time I've ever beheld.
That and trying to get every Triad card, like that one in the space station... :(

I do love the soundtrack in 8 though, quite a few good tracks and the opening "main" mission of the attack on Dollet was one of the best I had encountered in a game for a long time. What an intro.

I know, right? hold the applause.

But seriously.

Im replaying the PSX Final Fantasy's in order, i played them briefly as a child but never got farther than a couple hours in. Now, as a man, its time to add some more notches to my gaming belt :)

I played VII with a walk-through because i had heard that in this series there is a lot you can miss if you aren't careful (Vincent, im looking at YOU. SERIOUSLY how was anyone supposed to know how to get that dude?) and that's the kind of thing that grinds my gears. So i ransacked the game, did every side quest, got all kinds of hidden treats and was satisfied with my efforts. all the way up to disc 3.

Problem is, by the time i got to the Northern Crater, i was WAY too strong. Kind of took something away from my long awaited victory.

So, with Sephy's corpse not even cold, im ready to fire up VIII. And this time i wont be using any kind of guide or aid.

My question to you, Escapee's, is what are some essential things i need to experience in my play-through, without becoming too OP?

Also, i will be playing IX afterwards, so suggestions there would be appreciated

Oh and im aware that a lot of people hate this FF or the other, and that's fine. Id just like to beat them first and form my own opinions, so if we could keep that and spoilers to a minimum...
First off I know what you mean. Before I played 7 I was told by a few friends that he was uber hard. By the time I did him I had 3 ribbons making all status effects useless and had the best weapons and limit breaks for my party (Cloud, Cid and Vincent).

8 I love but make sure you read the tutorial about Junctioning really carefully. 8 is far easier to get OP if you are not carfull. You assign magic to a stat, e.g health, and it is increased. Because of this levels mean almost nothing. Bad guys get stronger the higher your level, meaning you can get higher level magic from bad guys. Only problem is it is very easy to get levels. I was lev 97 by the end of disc 1 once. It was crazy.

9 is my favorite. I will not spoil anything for you but I will give you 2 bits of advice. First Zidane and ViVI are Must have in a party (I like to combine them with Garnet and Stiner) as they are just so powerfull plus ViVi is awesome. Secondly make sure that all your characters have as many status immunity skills as possible as for the first 2 discs and the first half of disc 3 you will have to use all of your party members at some point and some bosses have some really inoying status effect moves.

EDIT: Also in 8 you can get an abillity that lets you turn cards into items. You can turn Bahamuts card into 100 megalixers. Makes the last boss beyond easy.

Remember to check the Draw spells of every boss you come across. If you miss a GF you'll hate yourself for it. That's all there is to miss in the game, really. But make sure your GFs are always learning something. It's pretty easy to forget that a GF has finished learning something and it then goes on to learn something useless, so keep checking those.
Oh, also, make sure you junction Death to strength and Curaga to HP as soon as you get them. You'll thank me later.

[small]Edit: Oh, whoops. You don't want to be OP. Try to forget that last part. >.> [/small]
