So I just saw Prometheus... (spoiler free)

...And I have to say it wasn't too bad.

It wasn't mindblowingly epic, nor will it be as fondly remembered as Alien, but it was a very solid sci-fi movie. And for a prequel that's saying a lot.

It was great to see Ridley Scott return to science fiction though. Seeing the inside of the Prometheus ship made me realize how much I missed the guy. In a time were the visuals of nearly every sci-fi movie are overly slick, stylish and cool, it's nice to an old master's keen eye at work.

The performances were all around good, except for a few paper thin throw-away characters. Michael Fassbender is charming as hell and reminded me of a young Michael York, though his character can be a bit obvious.

The second half as well as the ending were a bit meh, but when it peaks it's brilliant. One scene in particular was fucking awesome (you'll know when you see it).

So, anybody else see it yet? What did you think?

p.s. Glad this movie wasn't PG13.

Haven't seen it yet, but I've already got my tickets to the midnight showing. Still deciding whether or not I want to wear my Weyland/Yutani t-shirt or my United States Colonial Marines t-shirt.

So... do you think this is the beginning of a same-universe spin-off series? Like another Quadrilogy? Or did you get the vibe that this is a one-shot deal?

There is something mentioned near the end that might suggest a sequel to said prequel, but I highly doubt they're going to follow up on that.

What I have heard is that is asks a shitload of questions then answers none of them.

I wasn't really bothered by it asking questions and not answering them, more by "things" happening that it doesn't bother to explain as much. The movie starts to lack focus past the half way point, and sorta ends up meandering. There are alien creature moments, but the reasons behind them are kind of all over the place.

But it does have Michael Fassbender wearing an awesome space helmet.

That's good to hear. I will admit to a less than robust confidence in Mr. Scott after Robin Hood. I'm assuming no scruffy orphan boys leap off donkeys and begin dual wielding their way through the French Army in this film? That alone would be a step up.

Not sure how I feel about that, though I suppose I'm leaning more toward positive. I love the Alien movies, I'm glad that the universe is back in Ridley Scott's hands... but I don't want the universe to overstay its welcome, either... like some other film series' I happen to enjoy...

Hey, speaking of which, James Bond's twenty-third movie comes out soon! Twenty-five if you count "Never Say Never Again" and the 1967 parody of "Casino Royale" with David Niven.

I was incredibly disappointed with the movie. It seemed so disconnected and sketchy. Loads of plot-holes, logical gaps and in general, just aggravating. Me and my friends were very upset.

There are definitely a few plotholes, and the creatures felt very disconnected.

I never understood why that one guy turned into a zombie after getting sprayed by acidic alien blood.

But all around I thought it was a very decent watch.

What I mean to say is, if you were to push me to search for sequel bait in this film, I would pick this particular scene. But I don't think that's going to happen. Hollywood tends to be a bit more obvious when it comes to hinting at a sequel.

I thought it was a decent movie, nothing to write home about. It had a lot of potential and looked great, but ultimately it fizzled it all with a very mediocre second half. I feel like it kind of fell between two chairs, trying to both be an all out horror movie and a philosophical sci-fi one.

The acting from the main cast was pretty damn good though. Fassbender and Rapace nailed it.

I'm curious to know what scene you think was fucking awesome? Is it the abortion scene?

I think the problem is that it's sort of structured like a horror movie, eventhough it ultimately isn't one. The first and second act are building up to this threat, but the threat never really becomes a cohesive entity.

It's like watching Alien, but instead of the threat being the Alien, in its various life cycles, you see a bunch of creatures that have no real connection to eachother as the threat.

Having expected the worst, I was pleasantly surprised by the film. It had an interesting story to tell in my opinion, and I loved how it was only tangentially related to the Alien films. Except for the Space Jockeys and Weyland-Yutani, Prometheus might as well take place in an entirely different universe.

And the atmosphere of the film! Ridley Scott knows how to make proper sci fi.

Look it asks bigger questions, deals with bigger themes, has much nastier horror, has better acting and just has more going on. Now Alien is a brilliant film, so good that all the highly talented filmmakers who worked on the sequels all failed to add anything of worth but Prometheus surpasses it. It still has all the sexual horror of alien but adds in so much more. Alien is a great horror film but Prometheus is more than a horror film.

It depends on your opinion, I guess, but I wouldn't say it's a better movie because it deals with bigger themes and issues; It's about how well it handles these themes. And Prometheus introduces a lot of situations which it never clearly backs up.

The things it does well it does amazingly well, but it ultimately ends up throwing way too much out there that it never bothers to follow up on.

So in that regard I would say Alien is the more well rounded movie.
