I know, I know, I am several years late. I've been playing the trial for a couple of days, and so far I am liking it. Is it worth it to go for the full upgrade? Are there any tips/pointers people can give me? I've been playing as a Night Elf Hunter, fyi.

Why ... I guess the game is all right 'cos it'd probably run on max settings on a toaster, but with TOR and Guild Wars 2 coming soon, is the monthly fee really worth it?

Blah blah blah whatever.

I stopped playing a couple of years back, but before then I'd played from release. If you're having fun with what you're doing, a month's subscription isn't going to hurt your finances a great deal - so you can try above the trials level 20 limit. So by all means, it is worth upgrading.

The best tip I can give you is to make lots of friends very quickly. Part of the appeal of MMOs is the "Massively Multiplayer" bit, so if you have some nice people to play with then it'll add to the games replayability a great deal. It might be difficult though - to my understanding (or rather, ignorant assumtion) most of the people you'll meet are alternate characters. But stick in there, and as with all video games - try to have as much fun as possible. If you're not having fun, try something else. I think lots of 'gamers' forget that fun is the most important aspect of this hobby.

Edit: As for the poster above me, and concerning TOR and Guild Wars 2..

TOR isn't out for a month, and Guild Wars 2 for next year. If anything, a months subscription to WoW would be excellent MMO practice, considering most players of those two upcoming games will be well-versed in terminology/tactics/playstyles/experience. Seriously, playing one MMO is great value for money. Take this November for example - how many good £40-50 pound games are coming out this month? :D Versus one MMO.

A couple of years ago, yes. Now...TOR and GW2 are just too close on the horizon, and unless both prove to be huge disappointments, you're better off waiting. WoW is still a solid game, but it's moving into its elder years, and it's really best to get in on these MMOs while they're young and vibrant, and before everyone playing them is a jaded know it all.

This isn't necessarily true at all. I'm a former WoW player of 5 years, and it never ate up time I would've spent anywhere else.

Is it worth it? Well, honestly that's completely up to you. Do you like it so much that you're willing to pay for it?
In terms of tips: Just do quests (and dungeons if you like them). Don't buy any gear or weapons, it is a waste of money, since you get good enough gear from quests. Since you're a hunter: have a pet that can take punishment for you. That basically means Tenacity pets: Bears, beetles, boars, crabs, crocolisks, gorillas, scorpids, turtles and warp stalkers. Oh and in terms of what gear you should get: Agility is your main stat. If you've got any further questions, just quote me and ask, I've played this game for 5 years as I said, and I have leveled an hunter from start to finish.

If you're hellbent on staying with WoW, reroll...people don't take too kindly to Night Elf hunters, unless that's changed in the 8 months since I quit.

By all means, keep playing. If you can try out the Cataclsym content, you'll find the gnome, worgen and goblin starting zones are far and away more satisfying.

Seriously stop while you're ahead and play a game that will chew up less of your time - like EvE or Lord of the Rings Online (if u have to play one at all)

I am serious here, WoW chewed up three quarters of a year of my life... Three quarters of a year of my life was spent in front of one screen or another. Bad mistake.
That's your fault, not the game's. The game makes it possible to sink infinite amount of time to the game, but you're the one who does so. You can play the game moderately and still be succesfull (I was a succesfull raider with a social life).

When in doubt, listen to Yahtzee [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/2634-World-of-Warcraft-Cataclysm]. Then decide for yourself.

Don't.

It is a waste of time, and it is all in all - a bad game.

You will level up to the cap, durring the same borring quests until You hit the end-game. There You will raid the same instances over and over, or You might look into the totaly unbalanced PvP. I'd say don't waste Your money. ToR and Guild Wars 2 are comming out soon, no point of playing a lack-luster game.

Also the community is terrible. Some people are nice, yes, but mostly is like browsing 4chan.

Your first fault was rolling a stereotype/cliche. Aside from that- save your gold and dont buy expensive AH armor. Quests will give you all you need while leveling. Recommended you level as Beastmaster spec. If you run dungeons, don't pull a Leeroy Jenkins. Beside that, have fun. I sure have.

seriously wow is great fun if you can find some like-minded people to play with but i would implore you to change class. Hunters are annoying and not very useful, you might have a hard time finding people to play with. If you like pvp mages are really the only choice. if you like pve tank is a lot of fun and you will always get a group but it's thankless and you will get blamed for everything

No player worth their salt cares what race/class combination you play, as long as you do not behave like a total retard.

So don't listen to the Nay-Sayers, who of course all play Dwarf Rogues and female Orc Mages to not play common class/race combinations!

Funny how many people say don't play it. I played it for a few years, quit a few months back.

*All MMO's are time sinks.
*Every MMO has pretty much the same quests; go here, kill that, collect this. Blizzard has improved that by adding vehicles and instanced quests. Which are an improvement on the game.
*Every MMO has endgame content that is played over and over.
*No PvP is truely balanced especially with so many classes. There is no class that's good v.s. all.
*ToR might be the new Aion/Rift/Warhammer Online, etc. and die off after a few months. Guild Wars might survive due to no subscription.
*MMO's in general have bad communities, its what happens when you get alot of people together.

But all in all, I don't see any real valid points why not to play. Most if not all MMOs have those negitive points.

-

My advice for the OP is to go run some Instances. Go PvP a little get a range on the game, and judge if you'll like it. Find a guild or something because WoW is very dull without a group of friends.

Ignore the Don't's
If you're a normal person, who has his priorities straight, it will not consume your life, and it's just a fun game.

As for hunter tips:
1)You have a excellent solo class. Tame a tank pet [http://www.wow-petopia.com/] if you're having troubles keeping the mobs off of you.

2)When you reach level 15, you can use the dungeon finder to group up with 4 other random people to do instances. Turn Growl off, this makes the Tank's job easier. (press, P go to the pet tab and right click Growl)

3) There are 3 specs you can pick at level 10
Beast mastery - Makes your pet the main source of damage, and lets you tame exotic pets at a higher level.
Marksmanship - Increases the damage your shots do.
Survival - Damage is more based around traps and poison arrows.

Pick which ever one you like best. Though for solo play Beast mastery is slightly better.

4) Agility is your friend.

5)Ask me anything you want, Hunter is one of my mains and I have been playing for ...long enough to help newbies.

If you really want to play seriously, buy the whole package, all expansions.

Awhile back I got the WoW battle chest, and played for couple months, got my Dwarf Paladin up to level 60 and was excited that I was going to get my first flying mount and be able to fly around freely. It turns out though, that someone at Blizzard had the stupid idea to make it so that now people have to have everything up to Cataclysm to be able to use flying mounts for flying. Besides buying the Expert riding skill, they added that people have to buy the Flight Master's License to fly a flying mount.

They lost a customer in me just for that. If I remember correctly, flying mounts came in with Burning Crusade, if that is the case, then because I at least have Burning Crusade, I should be able to use a flying mount.

So, if you want to really play everything 100%, get all expansions. Heck, if I had actually known that in the first place, I probably wouldn't have even bought the WoW battle chest in the first place and not started seriously playing. It's no wonder that WoW is losing players.

First things first. If you like the basic game mechanics then despite what others say it does get better. There's a reason World of Warcraft is so successful. It's like drugs. It's addictive because people enjoy it. Despite what some people say in that it is addictive but terrible, that makes no sense. How can something be addictive if you don't like it?

Secondly, because it IS addictive then make sure you limit yourself. Because you are compelled to keep playing based on the $$$ = time conundrum.

Third, play with addons. Specifically an addon called 'Wowpro'. It gives you a guide and an arrow telling you what to do next at every turn to make you level really fast at the same time as showing you what the game has to offer.

Fourth, remember that with all online games no one likes a jerk. There's always going to be some douche who is angry at you for luckily winning an item and rage-quits. Don't become one! It isn't really about the game, it's about the interaction with other players. I recommend becoming part of a Quest / Fun guild. They don't require you to be on at certain times of the day so you can come and go as you please. Be social! Work as a cohesive team.

Fifth, because of the nature of the game and the fact there is no pause button, do not ignore people in the real world around you. I know it sounds silly but suddenly you become attached the game. "Just 5 more minutes, we are almost finished this dungeon." Don't fall victim to this. The real world is more important, and the game will be waiting for you when you're ready.

With Burning Crusade you can ONLY fly in Outworld. If you buy WOTLK you can fly in Northrend. You cannot fly in Kalimdor or the Eastern Kingdoms until you buy Cataclysm. I don't have Cataclysm, only WOTLK and I can fly everywhere except the latter.
