My English teacher's husband works there. She was quite concerned about it today. He called and said he was at work and she asked "are you safe and armed?". He said yes, so she said okay and got back to class stuff.

Anyway, I don't know what could cause someone to do something like this. Probably true insanity.
Unfortunately, if he was seen anywhere close to a video game in the last decade, this probably will be blamed on games.

Down here in NZ guns are way less prevalent. It's more about hidden weapons but whatever. When I was at school, one of my friends had put LEDs on a coke bottle (he was...special), one of the teachers found it in the bin, and we were evacuated. I don't even know how you get them confused. But wow that is intense, so lucky it was only them who were killed. Darwinian evolution at work it seems...

Edit: Extra clarification: No one knows why he did it or how he got a frickin AK47. I don't know how he even angled it to shoot himself anyway. Also, apparently he was running around smiling at people and yelling "woohoo!" So yeah...
That's what I was wondering.

Sorry i don't believe this unless you can prove it.
Seems like something you could just google if you didn't believe the poster...

People kill themselves every day.
The only thing that makes this any different is proximity.
One of my former neighbours killed herself.
Didn't know her, so I didn't give a shit.
Don't see why you would.
What makes this different is the public nature of it, not proximity.

I don't know about you, but random people running around firing ak-47s randomly and then shooting themselves in the school library isn't all that common around here.

Otherwise, no reason you should care about someone you don't know killing themselves, but this is more about the spectacle than the final result.

No school shootings at my school (Christian school FTW?), but someone DID try to poison everyone with a chemical spill.

However, that was high school chemistry. It wasn't safe to touch and smelled bad, but was otherwise harmless.

Wow...first I was on GameFAQs when someone posted live dispatches from the Virginia Tech shooting, now I'm on the Escapist and someone's posting about a shooting at Texas.

I better stay off of Kotaku---they say things come in threes.

Anyway, that must have been shit a day. I think it can only be blamed on the availability of firearms because, not to sound insensitive, who shoots themselves with an AK47?!
People who want to commit suicide but also want to leave a huge mess I guess. (or now that I think of it, No possibility of survival unlike 9mm rounds)
The 9mm bullet is physically larger in diameter then the 7.62mm round used in the AK-47. It makes a bigger hole, it may not weigh as much or have as much powder behind it, but that doesn't make a damn bit of difference when you are holding to gun to your head.

People in this thread seem to think the AK is some magical weapon with exploding bullets or something.
Do you understand velocity? Its a very large factor in bullet damage, 9mm sometimes dont even make an exit wound and thats what makes the mess. I have heard military stories of Barrett 50 cals cutting people clean in half because of long range bullet drop (but of course they have an even greater velocity AND size).

My middle school was put on lock-down because of a bomb threat (or gun threat, I don't remember), so that lasted forever. There was also a large scale drug search last year with search dogs and that took a bit over an hour. I doubt anyone was caught though.

I go to the University of Texas, where a student shot himself with an AK47 this morning. Not really that hard to survive, but there was obviously a huge commotion, I was in lock down in a lecture hall for three hours, and it was overall one of the weirdest days of my life, and I'm still a little frazzled. All I can think to do is my laundry. So I want to know, Escapist, have you ever experienced anything like this? What do you think possesses people to shoot places up or shoot themselves in public? Are you worried that this will get blamed on video games? There's just so much to talk about when this stuff happens I don't even know a good question to ask.
Since he only shot himself, its not really a shooting.
He shot at several people, he just miss.

He got an AK47 from where exactly? I didn't think they sold them in vending machines on campus.
Remember where this takes place. Here in Texas, everyone has at least one automatic weapon.
/joke
I thought texans were given guns with every purchase of normal everyday goods, buy your weekly groceries, get a free gun...
/joke
You were wrong. We get a free revolver and case of bullets with every purchase of a bottle of whiskey.

So he got hold of a ak-47 and then shot himself with it.Wouldnt it been easier just to get hold of a handgun as you dont normally just pick up a ak-47 on the streets.

Well other than abit random at least the guy didnt try to take out half the school with him
You can get AK 47 and pistols and all sorts of shit in Tex but its cheaper to just walk over the border and buy it in Mexico without background checks/waiting periods/you can pay off cops with $50 and match what they make in a week.
---
Twice I had a person break into my house, I couldn't tell what the first guy had on him because it was 2 in the morning so I jumped my flight of stairs into my basement and went for the gun locker by the time I got back up the stairs he was already back through the side window and didn't have a visible weapon. My parents were on the phone with the cops 3 seconds after the window went in and so we just waited for them to track him down (dumbass cut himself REALLY bad on our window and bled all over the place left bloody finger prints and everything, ended up having 8 previous arrests for breaking and entering, you would have thought that was enough practice for him to be more careful crawling over glass). Caught him 45 minutes later passed out from blood loss.
The second time a guy broke in through our other side door and my dad and I both grabbed our guns and told him in the most forceful manner possible to put his forehead on the ground and if he did so much as twitch we would both shoot him, take whatever money he had to fix the holes in the floor from the 3 inch slugs. and we again waited for the cops to haul him away.

My neighborhood used to be just plain shitty but we had a police station put in 4 blocks away so now its one of the best in the state. Crime dropped by 78%
Its all in the "Wisconsin Public Reccord" in 2007.

Maybe he learned to shoot in the Marines, like Charles Whitman.
From the book suppository?

Well if he would have learned it in the Marines he would have hit what he shot at.

Wait, how would you commit suicide with an assault rifle? Did he pull the trigger with his toes or something?

And I wouldn't really consider this a school shooting, more like a suicide during school hours on a campus.
